Red Oak, Texas

Tornado downs Texas church
As many as 43 weather-related deaths occurred the week of Christmas, according to CNN, as storms swept the central and southern U.S.
On Saturday, the Ovilla Road Church of the Nazarene in Red Oak, Texas, was destroyed by a tornado. The parsonage was also damaged.
WFAA News reported Ovilla Road pastor Ron Adams was at the Mavericks basketball game in Dallas when the tornado struck the church sanctuary. Adams said he came to the church and immediately began cleanup efforts with church members.
"We were trying to get as much of the valuable stuff … into cover so it wasn’t in the elements," Adams told WFAA. "We got to the point where we just want everybody to get out of there. Nobody’s gotten hurt so far and we don’t want that to change."
Prayer is requested for Pastor Ron and Cheryl Adams and their congregation as they minister to their members and neighbors affected by the storms.
For information on providing assistance, contact the USA/Canada Region's disaster response coordinators at ndr@nazarene.org or
800-306-9950 FREE. See WFAA's website for more photos and video of the Red Oak tornado damage. That same evening near Dallas, Nazarene missionaries George and Nancy Miller were taking cover from a tornado hitting their daughter's home.
"Pray for our family," they wrote. "We were [celebrating] the Christmas season with our daughter Gloria when about 8 p.m. [Saturday] a tornado came and tore off the roof and half of the upstairs of their home.
"It is so awesome being part of a church family as her pastor and others came and helped last night and friends from church were away for the holidays but opened their home for us to take shelter for the night."
The Millers, who have served as Nazarene missionaries since 1989 in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and most recently the Philippines, said everyone in their party was safe as they took shelter in a closet.
"The vehicles outside were damaged and one of them totaled," they said.

Vlaardingen, Netherlands

Dutch youth raise 11,000 euros in 24-hour live broadcast
Photos by Ruben van DuinThe youth of the Vlaardingen, Netherlands, Church of the Nazarene took their Internet talk show into the city 11-12 December when they broadcast for 24 hours from the main square, cooperating with the community to raise more than 11,000 euros (about 12,000 U.S. dollars) for a national Red Cross fundraising drive.
The event — which got the congregation outside the walls of the building and into contact with people in the city — raised the profile of the church, which hopefully will lead some to visit in the future.
Xperience TV debuted in November 2014. The one-hour, monthly live show is filmed inside the Vlaardingen church, written and produced by the youth group, who also work as cast and crew. Depending on the topic featured, anywhere between 500 and 10,000 viewers stream the show on their Internet channel.
The idea behind Xperience was for the church’s youth to develop their skills and talents while reaching unchurched youth in a culturally appropriate way. Viewers are invited to visit the studio and even help with production. This allows them to come into contact with the youth group members and feel comfortable inside the church.
The idea worked, says youth worker Wouter van der Zeijden.
“We see new people coming to our studio every month. Since we’ve started Xperience TV one year ago, we’ve seen our youth group double itself! The most interesting thing is that we didn’t just find a way to get our own young people enthusiastic, but also regularly see young people who don’t know Jesus at all. Some don’t even have a clue they’re entering a church, but somehow get touched by the nice atmosphere and the fact that they are fully accepted how they are.”
A few months ago, the youth decided to participate in the annual, nationwide fundraising effort called Serious Request for the Red Cross in the Netherlands. The event raises money for “silent disasters,” which this year is focused on young people seeking education in war-torn areas.
A big radio station pioneered the fundraiser in 2004 by setting up a glass structure and locking its DJs inside where they would host a live program while not eating anything.
The church’s youth wanted to do their own version of the glass house for Serious Request.
At first, the plan was to put the glass house on the church’s parking lot and do the live broadcast independently, but a local entrepreneur whom they consulted for advice said they weren’t thinking big enough.
The final outcome was that they were invited by the city to put the glass house on the city square, in conjunction with the city’s Christmas market. Excited by the vision, more than 100 volunteers, both from the church and from without, signed up to help with the massive endeavor.
Two DJs from the city’s radio station agreed to join with Xperience TV’s presenter duo in the glass house. The program was simulcast on Xperience TV, the radio station, and a local TV station for 24 hours.
Several months before the big day, the church challenged local schools, civic groups, clubs, and sports teams to participate by bringing donations. Many eagerly accepted the challenge.
On 11 December at 4 p.m., in front of a large crowd, the Vlaardingen city mayor ceremonially locked the DJs and presenters inside the glass house. The Vlaardingen youth group ran the cameras, sound, and other technology.
During the next 24 hours, individuals dropped off donations. Several schools presented checks for as much as 800 or 1000 euros, which they had raised in the days leading up to the fundraiser.
At one point, a scouting group and an ill-reputed motorcycle gang both converged on the square to drop off checks, presenting quite a contrast — but also the spirit generated by the Vlaardingen church’s call for everyone to work together in stopping silent disasters.
The program also included interviews with musical artists and bands, funny challenges, a “dance cam” and games. On Saturday morning, the volunteers distributed to several homes for the elderly to serve a special breakfast.
At 4 p.m. on Saturday, the group tallied all the donations and celebrated with the gathered crowd that together they had raised 11,360 euros.
“I started to get emotional,” said Freek Bahlman, one of the Xperience presenters inside the glass house. “We got out of the house and got onto a small stage before this big screen, and the whole square was filled with people. Keep in mind that we did this for the first year, so not a lot of people knew if this would be a success. So, yeah, that was really special.”
“This project started as a youth project but it somehow evolved into a church project,” said van der Zeijden. “So in a way I do think the youth influenced the church."

MNU, Trevecca receive 1.1M for youth theology institute
MidAmerica Nazarene University and Trevecca Nazarene University received grants to establish a youth theology summer institute as part of Lilly Endowment’s High School Youth Theology Institutes initiative, which seeks to encourage young people to explore theological traditions, ask questions about the moral dimensions of contemporary issues, and examine how their faith calls them to lives of service. Together the schools received more than 1.1 million dollars.
Beginning in summer 2016, the YES camp at MNU will welcome high school juniors and seniors engaged in exploring a call to ministry. The students will stay on campus in residence halls and enjoy workshops, speakers, activities, and fun while learning from a variety of ministry partners. MNU’s Christian Ministry and Formation faculty will join with resources such as Nazarene Theological Seminary, the Olathe Pastor's Network, the Church of the Nazarene, Nazarene Youth International, Youth Front, Christian high schools, and others to facilitate discussion groups, conduct focus groups on youth engagement in local ministry, and to host service opportunities throughout the summer camp. The conference will utilize resources from the spectrum of programs and services available at MNU to facilitate the event.
Randy Cloud, program director, says students will discuss not only theology and Bible, but will also investigate other ministry areas such as multicultural opportunities, worship, sharing one’s faith, ethics, and spiritual formation.
“We are grateful for this award and are committed to being good stewards of this grant,” Cloud said. “The end goal of the institute is to help high school students see themselves as leaders in their churches both locally and globally. This program will have significant implications for the future of the church.”
Trevecca's summer immersion program is open to students in grades nine through 12, including rising ninth graders and recent graduates, starting in the summer of 2017. Participants who are accepted will take part in Mission Nashville, a five-day, hands-on urban ministry opportunity based at Trevecca, then remain on campus for an additional week for more intensive theological training related to contemporary challenges in the world, such as reconciliation, poverty, and immigration. Students will learn from Trevecca professors and visiting scholars, engage in group discussions, meet with leaders of ministry organizations, and discern how God is calling them to respond to the needs of the world.
“This is an opportunity for Trevecca to take a role in helping our youth to engage important questions and think about the work of the church in the world,” said Heather Daugherty, associate chaplain at Trevecca and principal investigator of the grant. “I think the gospel calls us to a particular way of seeing the world. We want to give youth the tools to engage the world theologically and understand their part in God’s work in the world — not just someday, but right now — and explore how that will shape the rest of their lives.”
A total of 82 schools in 29 states and the District of Columbia are participating in the initiative. Although some schools are independent, many reflect the religious heritage of their founding traditions. These traditions include Baptist, Brethren, Lutheran, Mennonite, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Reformed churches, as well as Roman Catholic, non-denominational, Pentecostal, and historic African-American Christian communities.
“These colleges and universities are well-positioned to reach out to high school students in this way,” said Christopher L. Coble, vice president for religion at the endowment. “They have outstanding faculty in theology and religion who know how to help young people explore the wisdom of religious traditions and apply these insights to contemporary challenges.”
The endowment is giving $44.5 million in grants to help a select group of private four-year colleges and universities around the nation to create the institutes. The grants are part of the endowment’s commitment to identify and cultivate a cadre of theologically minded youth who will become leaders in church and society.
An additional grant to the Forum for Theological Exploration will establish a program that will bring together leaders of the high school youth theology institutes to foster mutual learning and support.
Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family — J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons J.K. Jr. and Eli — through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly & Company. The Endowment exists to support the causes of religion, education and community development. Lilly Endowment’s religion grantmaking is designed to deepen and enrich the religious lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.[MidAmerica Nazarene University, Trevecca Nazarene University]Read more

Eurasia Region begins 3 weeks of prayer, fasting
The Eurasia Region is inviting all its local communities to start the year with prayer and fasting, 18 January to 7 February. The objective is to unite Nazarenes across the region in a focused time of deepening their relationships with God, as well as with other people, and worshipping with God’s creation.
Prayer and fasting is one of the Eurasia Region’s four priorities.
The fast will draw on the theme of reconciliation from November’s Eurasia Regional Conference, with a different emphasis each week: the reconciliation of God-Human, Human-Human, and Human-Creation relationships.
Every day will feature a Scripture reading that participants are invited to reflect on as they allow the Holy Spirit to work in them.
To download more information, as well as a daily Scripture reading schedule, visit eurasiaregion.org or the region’s Facebook page. All are welcome to translate the document for the purpose of sharing with churches.

Nazarenes in the News
The News-Gazette photoFormer Olivet student repays Christmas kindness shown 40 years ago
Champaign, Illinois
(The News-Gazette, December 24) Forty years ago this month, Habeeb Habeeb had no money, no way to contact his parents in his war-torn homeland, no idea how he was going to eat while the college cafeteria was closed for Christmas break.
But on the last day of classes at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Habeeb checked his campus mailbox and found a plain envelope with a $100 bill wrapped in a white sheet of lined notepad paper with the words, "We thought you could use this."
There was no name or signature. To this day, Habeeb doesn't know whose generosity lifted him at such a critical time in his life.
"I was extremely and profoundly touched by the goodness and kindness of America and such a marvelous display of Christian generosity. I have never forgotten that blessing," Habeeb recently wrote in a letter that has accompanied more than 40 separate $100 donations he has made to individuals and organizations over the last year to pass on the generosity shown to him.

Bangor Daily News photoMaine church turns toy theft into message
Wiscasset, Maine
(Bangor Daily News, December 23) Pastor Wally Staples was shopping for toys Friday afternoon with his wife, Sharon, when he got a call that he said “blew our minds.”
Back at the Wiscasset Church of the Nazarene, while volunteers worked in the basement packing Christmas boxes of food to give to families in need, someone had walked into the sanctuary and stolen two large bags of toys from among the hundreds waiting to be given to area children.
“They took the toys and made a run for it,” Staples, 68, said Tuesday. “And the sad part is we would have given them the toys, had they said something. It doesn’t make any sense.”
For the 13th consecutive Christmas, Staples, his wife and a group of volunteers have collected children’s names and ages, then worked with various organizations throughout Maine to provide toys, books and games for local boys and girls to find under their tree.

Tax resources for US ministers, treasurers now available
The 2016 editions of tax preparation booklets for U.S. ministers and church treasurers are now available.
These easy-to-use booklets are rich with information prepared by church tax specialists Dan Busby, J. Michael Martin, and John Van Drunen of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. They are updated annually to provide the latest, most accurate information.
The guides are designed to simplify the unique tax situations faced by churches and pastors — matters which even paid preparers may not be aware of. In particular, the guide for ministers includes two examples of completed returns. The guide for church treasurers features forms that must be filed by congregations in the coming weeks. Best of all, since Pensions and Benefits USA is a member of the ECFA, the organization makes them available to our clergy and churches at no cost.
“These guides are an invaluable resource for any minister or church treasurer,” said Don Walter, director of Pensions and Benefits USA. “We are grateful to Dan Busby and the ECFA for making them available to our ministers and churches.”

USA/Canada Region announces new campus ministry coordinator
The USA/Canada Region Nazarene Youth International office announced Chris Bean as the new campus ministry coordinator for the region. The decision was made with input from other campus ministry leaders.
Chris Bean has served as a campus minister at the University of Cincinnati for seven years with the Coalition for Christian Outreach and as a director of campus ministries for the Southwestern Ohio District Church of the Nazarene during that same time. He is a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University (1993). After being ordained in 1999, he pursued and completed a Master of Divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary (2005) and has more than 20 years of ministry experience in youth, worship, and college ministry.
Chris and his wife, Debbie, reside just east of Cincinnati with their three children, Jessica, Jaquelyn, and Josiah. He can often be found with a cup of coffee in hand (which he probably roasted himself at Pneuma Coffee Roasters) as he engages with university students in Cincinnati.
Campus ministry is vital in reaching students after they graduate from high school and traditional youth ministry settings. The USA/Canada Region is inspired by the number of leaders actively reaching out to campuses near them and anticipates continued expansion in this ministry throughout the region under Chris Bean’s leadership.
To learn more about Chris's ministry, watch a video from The Table magazine, a new publication from the USA/Canada Region.[USA/Canada NYI]Read more
