Special eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton from The United Methodist Church of the REsurrection in Leawood, Kansas, United States for Tuesday, 19 July 2016Dear Resurrection Family,
As you’ve heard by now, Capt. Robert “Dave” Melton of the Kansas City, Kansas police department, was shot and killed this afternoon. He is the second Kansas City, Kansas police officer killed in the last two months. This, coupled with the killing of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge have left those in law enforcement and their families shaken and grieving.
I’m writing to ask that you stop for a moment this evening to do two things: Would you please pray for Kansas City area law enforcement officials right now? And, if you know any law enforcement officials – neighbors, friends or fellow church members, would you reach out to them to let them know of your love, support and appreciation for them?
Some of you knew that Scott Chrostek and I were scheduled to take a “ride-along” with Kansas City, Missouri police tonight to observe the police at work, to see the work of these men and women in the community and to communicate our care for them. In the light of Capt. Melton’s death the police department has postponed the ride-alongs.
Next month Resurrection is partnering with St. James UMC in KCMO and local law enforcement for a conversation about race, violence and law enforcement. This will be the first of several events aimed at building bridges and tearing down walls in our city.
Finally, I’d ask you to please remember the family of Julie Peters. Julie has served as the Associate Director of Student Ministries at Resurrection Leawood for the last ten years. She died this morning after a year-long battle with cancer. Her life will be celebrated on Saturday in our Student Center. Julie will be missed.
I believe each of us, and our congregation as a whole, has a role to play in breaking down walls and building bridges regarding race, and providing encouragement to those in law enforcement in our metropolitan area.
In Christ’s Love,
Adam Hamilton
