MOUNT VERNON, Ohio —The Martin Luther King Legacy Committee hosted the 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast on the campus of Kenyon College on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017. The breakfast panel brought eight community members to the table to talk about how Knox County can work together to fulfill Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream in the local community.
Presented by MVNU and Kenyon College, the Community and College Panel included MVNU President Dr. Henry Spaulding; Kenyon College President Dr. Sean Decatur; Mayor Richard K. Mavis, City of Mount Vernon; Tamara Parson Anderson, Diversity Coalition of Knox County; Rev. Scott Elliott, First Congregational United Church of Christ; Michelle Belt, Knox Community Hospital; Superintendent Bill Seder, Mount Vernon City Schools; and Chief Roger Monroe, Mount Vernon Police Department.
In addition, the panel discussed the importance of collaboration in the community. Key takeaways were that education is essential; from elementary to higher education, students are to listen, think, have empathy and understanding, and be aware of one another. Knox County citizens can take advantage of community events, speak up and get involved in something that matters to them, and work together to achieve peaceful solutions. Services and businesses in the community must continue to provide safe places for victims to find hope and be treated with dignity and respect.
Essay Contest Awards were presented to three local high school students from Mount Vernon City Schools. Taelyn King placed first, Cailyn Kennedy placed second, and Savannah Haist placed third.
First-Knox National Bank Book Scholarships of $100 each were awarded to MVNU students, Madeline Quinn and Angela Flach; and Kenyon College students, Winnie Thaw, Michaela Jenkins, and Jorge Sebastian Chavez Erazo. The Beulah Apostolic Award of Excellence was presented to Dr. Clara Roman-Odio, Professor of Spanish and Director of Latino/a Studies with a specialty in literature and society in late-20th century at Kenyon College.
The closing prayer was presented by Rev. Kevin Peterson, Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Jones to Present at MVNU 2016—17 Lecture/Artist Series
Jan. 10, 2017
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University is pleased to host Kim Berry Jones as part of the MVNU 2016—17 Lecture/Artist series. Jones is the Program Director at the Center for Justice and Reconciliation at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif. She will discuss her work at the CJR, which focuses on immigration, human trafficking, and fair trade, on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at 7:15 p.m., in Thorne Performance Hall inside the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium.
A 1990 graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University, Jones' career focus had been in the marketing industry, but in 2013 she listened to a call to live life "poured out" for people in the margins. Founder and owner of Canopy Marketing, a web development and branding company, Jones still manages her business of 20 years, but now also serves as the Program Director at the Center for Justice and Reconciliation (CJR) at PLNU. First as an alumni volunteer, and now on staff at the CJR, Jones' focus is on building awareness and support for the center's human trafficking initiatives. The city of San Diego, Calif., was identified by the FBI as a hotspot for child sex trafficking, and the CJR is at the center of the region's efforts to change this hotspot.
In 2014, Jones helped launch the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship Fund, a scholarship for survivors of human trafficking that now supports three full-time students at PLNU. She is also responsible for launching a network of PLNU alumni who support the mission of the CJR, building a donor base for the scholarship, connecting community members to the work of the CJR and advocating to empower others to take their unique spot in the work to end human trafficking.
Jones has served in a variety of leadership roles including the San Diego Lawyers Club Human Trafficking Collaborative, the PLNU Business Alumni, local PTA and MOPS groups, church leadership, and community organizations. She is the recipient of the PLNU 2016 Alumni Leadership Award.
Jones is the mother of two young adults, son, Zach, who is a sophomore Peace Studies major at Chapman University, and daughter, Brooke, who is planning to attend PLNU this fall. Jones and her husband, Chris, have spent their lives raising their children in La Mesa, Calif., with the ultimate goal of shepherding their hearts toward the things of Christ.
These events are free and open to the public. For more information visit www.mvnu.edu/lectureartist/index.asp.
