Sunday's Scripture:
Genesis 32:22 He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had. 24 Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day. 25 When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained, as he wrestled. 26 The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.”
Jacob said, “I won’t let you go, unless you bless me.”
27 He said to him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Jacob”. 28 He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29 Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.”
He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” He blessed him there.
30 Jacob called the name of the place Peniel†: for, he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.(Messianic WEB)
Next Sunday you are invited to our end-of-the-month potluck after 11:00am worhip. Just bring a dish to share to the kitchen before worship and come back for wonderful fellowship and food!

One Body, Together
Last Sunday, our youth planned a really cool event: an intergenerational "mixer," where they got to share stories and conversations with adults from the congregation.
I came at the end of the event, to be a part of closing worship. What a joy it was to get to glimpse the fellowship that had happened. And, then, what a privilege to share communion together, as we remember that we are (after all) truly part of one body, in Christ.
I often find myself drawn to people who are like me--who are at a similar place in life, who share the same political views, who like the same music. The church is one place where I hang out with people who are different from me. And I'm richly blessed by that. I believe it's one of the really awesome things that happens here--not only that we get to be together, but that we come to understand God better, for having been together.
with gratitude and hope,
Pastor Molly

Support our Building Plans
Our fundraising is well underway for our special fall building plans! Approximately $15,000 of our $70,000 goal has been donated, and the first of our renovation projects that it funds is done; you can read the whole list of what we've done and what we plan to do here.
We have already put your donations to work, and have renovated the stairway/hallways area of the Education Building by repainting the walls and stairs, and repairing the ceiling tiles--come see how fresh and welcome the space looks now.
There's still time to give to this campaign, and we encourage you to do so by this Sunday, October 20. Contributions to this one-time building campaign are above and beyond our regular tithes and offerings, which support our ongoing programs and ministries. To contribute, simply mark your gift for the Building Fund, and send it to the office or put it in the offering plate. You can read the letter our Trustees sent to the congregation here. Thanks for your support, as we seek to strengthen our ministries together!

A Note from Caroline, Director of Youth Ministries:
This church believes in and supports youth ministry so much. You all have made young people a priority, and on behalf of all of them, we are grateful. But, there's one small problem: it is working. Eight years ago our youth program served about 10 youth; now, our program has grown to include about 55 students. Most weeks, we split into Middle and High School groups for our meeting. We just don't have space in our youth room for all this; improvements to Epworth Patio and Epworth Lounge will make those spaces work as additional space for youth group, as well as for the other groups that use them.
The youth are just one group that will benefit from the list of high impact, do-able projects in this building campaign. As we dream about these changes, we are also tremendously grateful for what we already have. So, thank you to each of you for the loving church family our youth group has, a church family that has helped our youth program grow so well.

animate FAITH
A Small Group Class for Adults on Faith
Pastor Molly has begun a new seven-session class on faith on Tuesday nights through November 19, from 7:15-8:30. This adult course imaginatively explores central topics of Christianity. In each session, we will watch a video featuring a leading voice from the Christian faith, spend time on personal reflection and journaling, and share ideas with the group. Each session delves into a faith topic: God, religion, Jesus, salvation, the cross, the Bible and church.
Though we have sold out of the course book, you can still participate by coming any Tuesday night.

"One of the ways I have gotten to know more people in our congregation is to agree or volunteer to participate in small group study or activities with our church people and our youth. A Faith Community by Bob Peterson
One of the ways I have gotten to know more people in our congregation is to agree or volunteer to participate in small group study or activities with our church people and our youth. To say it is inspiring seems trivial, because it is much more. I heard a Senior High school girl say she was surprised to find out that so many adults she talked with were funny or humorous. In a question and answer participation with a Junior High School boy, he told me he most liked to play computer games, His question to me was, what was most troubling for me, and I answered, “My computer.” Now, while I wasn't surprised at his answer, he seemed surprised by mine. But, really now, isn’t it a small world? We just never know where our conversations will take us, and if we don’t communicate, we’ll miss some exciting serendipities in our lives.
The above incidents happened at the youth and adult Neighbors event last Sunday. Caroline and Meagan brought us together to become more acquainted, and it worked. The problem was that there is only so much time to do something like this and with everyone so busy, young and older alike, it may be difficult to achieve without considerable effort. Thanks to all who put it together.
The small group (12) being led by Pastor Molly on the subjects of God, Religion, Jesus, Salvation, Cross, Bible and Church, have become a bit acquainted, expressed themselves by sharing beliefs and learned from our leader as well as the text from the Journal upon which it is based. I believe any person would find it interesting and educational and there still are five weeks to go. Talk to Pastor Molly to get a better idea about this special study each Tuesday evening.
Our Journey of Faith leads us in many directions and to have a chance to hear theologian’s ideas and then share our own in discussion with like minded others is very special. Now is the time to take a look at the many opportunities our church provides for growth and education.

News from our Chancel Choir Director, Linda:
It was a risk to put together the choir and the youth band, but I really wanted to do it. I am so excited by our youth group and the musicians that have developed out of that ministry thanks to Trey, Caroline and Earnie, that I decided to go for it! The youth chose a song called From the Inside Out. The kids taught it to me, I taught it to the choir and when we sang it on Sunday we were almost ready, so we let the spirit of the moment guide us. It is really fun when those things work, and always makes me wonder if some other force is at work within us. It happens too often, so it must be true. I love working in this setting with these people, and the way the Holy Spirit works with us.  -Linda Waterman
SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, November 24
2 pm in the sanctuary (after the potluck)
