Lutheran Seminary – Moved by the Promise – God Pause – Saturday,
4 January 2014 – "Here I Am, Lord" ELW 574
This hymn has a tremendous significance in my life; it always
makes me smile. I first heard the hymn when I was attending a Global Mission
Event; I loved it right away! The words of the hymn came to mind again as I
talked to my bishop about the possibility of serving with our companion synod
in Tanzania. I always thought I was open to wherever God was calling me, but
still I thought, "certainly not there?!!" After visiting with the
Tanzanian people and being so blessed by their hospitality and generosity of
spirit, I heard God, "calling in the night." I had found a peace in
knowing I was going right where God wanted me.
Now I give thanks for my Tanzanian friends who taught me so much
and shared their lives with me. My hope and prayer is that as we all open
ourselves to God we will find joy in serving wherever it is that God is calling
us.
Gracious God, help us to open our hearts to your Spirit and
answer your call wherever that may be. AMEN!

“Here I Am, Lord” by Dan Schutte
1. I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Chorus:
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
2. I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have born my peoples pain.
I have wept for love of them, They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak My word to them,
Whom shall I send?
Chorus:
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
3. I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them,
My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide,
Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give My life to them,
Whom shall I send?
Chorus:
Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
