Now accepting nominations for The Angie Newman Award
The Great Plains Conference is now accepting nominations for The Angie Newman Award. Angie Newman (1833-1910) was active at many levels in the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC), the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the MEC, the Woman’s Home Missionary Society of the MEC and the WCTU. In 1888, Angie was the first woman elected as a delegate to General Conference. While she and other women were denied seats on the floor, they made their presence known and worked so that women would have the privilege of voice and vote at General Conference.
The Angie Newman Award is to honor a laywoman of the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC) whose contribution to the church and the community is an example of the spirit of Angie Newman. The ministry of the recipient should demonstrate commitment, compassion and a sense of justice for all people — especially women, youth and children.
If you know a laywoman who contributes to the church and community with a ministry that demonstrates commitment, compassion and a sense of justice, nominate her for this award. Nominations should be submitted in the form of an essay explaining how she has exemplified Angie Newman’s spirit.
Download the flier with more information about the award.
Nominations must be received no later than May 14, to be considered for 2014. Send completed nominations to Bette Trumble at btrumble@greatplainsumc.org or 12400 Buffalo Rd., Springfield, NE, 68059.
You can find information on other awards at www.GreatPlainsUMC.org/ac-awards.

Lay servant event well received
Gateway District Lay Servant Committee hosted a gathering of servants from a large area of central Nebraska on April 5, in Ansley, Neb. The committee met to begin establishing a multi-year plan for course offerings to celebrate the leadership of laity in the local church and to give individual lay servants an opportunity to share their passion for ministry as well as their vision for the future.
The event was supported by local pastors who led mini-course sessions to give the lay servants attending a taste of the content of courses offered to lay servants. Pastor Marvin Bauer of Sargent, Neb., led a session on leading prayer, Pastor Scott Evans of Ravenna, Neb., gave help in planning worship and Pastor Joel Plisek of the ALL Parish (Ansely-Litchfield-Loup City, Neb.) led a session on United Methodist polity.
Members of Gateway District Committee on Lay Servant Ministry (LSM) conducted small group sharing sessions for testimony and goal-setting. Committee members present were Pastor Jerry Schwarz, currently serving the Greeley-Scotia-North Loup (Neb.) parish; Norma Asher, certified lay minister (CLM) serving Hazard, Neb.; Stacey Erstrom, CLM serving the ALL Parish, Neb.; and Ardith Davenport, director of Gateway District LSM.
Also present was Bob Aderholt, Great Plains Conference director of LSM. Bob provided valuable resources of materials and knowledge of certification processes. A better understanding of the current policies and practices was the outcome of a question and answer session.
Many of the texts used for courses offered to lay servants were available for browsing during the day. A brief introduction to beadisciple.com was given, along with a discussion about the advantages for completing courses online.
Plans for upcoming course offerings and locations will be made once the director has received evaluations from the event participants.
A big thank you is owed to the Ansley UMC for allowing the use of their facilities. Representatives of the Ansley UMC prepared coffee, rolls and the noon meal for the 28 participants.

Quinter UMC holds procession for Palm Sunday

Quinter UMC, in Quinter, Kan., held a two block procession from Quinter’s Main Street to the church, prior to Palms Sunday’s 11 a.m., worship service. Despite the cool, and slightly damp, weather approximately 35 children, youth and adults gathered to join in the parade led by a live donkey. This was a first for the church — suggested by Pastor Kennedy Mukwindza. As everyone came into the church they continued the processional to the front to place their palm branches at the altar. The congregation is hoping to make this a yearly event as it was well received and the youth were really excited about being involved.

Great Plains Candidacy Summit
As the 100 year old hymn says, “The voice of God is calling its summons in our day!”
If you or someone you know is feeling the call of God toward professional ministry the Board of Ordained Ministry has created a new event to help them enter the candidacy process.
The Candidacy Summit is a two-day retreat for people entering the path to ordained or credentialed ministry. It is for anyone feeling called to the ministry of elder, deacon or local pastor who has done some discernment work with their pastor, spoken to their district superintendent and is ready to take the next step toward professional ministry.
The first candidacy summit will be on June 27-28, 2014, at Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Neb.
The Candidacy Summit will be a place to ask questions, connect with other people who are starting the ordination process, learn about different types of ministry and begin to understand the process used to prepare for full time service to God through the UMC. Participants will also complete some of the required testing to jump start the Candidacy process.
A guide for candidacy, the summit schedule and registration are available on the Great Plains website.

JFON-NE forms a creative partnership with Completely KIDS
Editor’s note: The following was written by Linda Langkow, National Justice For Our Neighbors’ communications and office manager.
Getting creative to provide the highest quality and also the greatest number of services to clients is a Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON) trait. JFON-Nebraska (JFON-NE) gives us a unique example of creativity in its partnership with local youth program agency — Completely KIDS. Completely KIDS has more than 2,000 children enrolled in its Omaha, Neb., after-school program. The staff at this after-school program discovered that a significant number of these children are experiencing difficulties at home due to their own or their family's legal status.
Completely KIDS approached JFON-NE for help with this situation. What resulted is a collaboration that works with the strengths of each agency. JFON-NE secured the funding for an additional full-time attorney who specializes in immigration legal services for children and works with families connected with Completely KIDS. National JFON provided an enhancement grant to support this initiative.
Completely KIDS is in charge of spreading the news that there is affordable immigration legal assistance available. Additionally, Completely KIDS staff schedule appointments and even assist with transportation to attorney meetings. In this partnership, the JFON mission of providing hospitality through legal services meets the Completely KIDS mission to address intergenerational poverty and assist children and families in gaining the knowledge, skills and support that will empower them to overcome barriers to their success.
JFON-NE is a United Methodist Ministry and a Great Plains Conference Advance (#721). To learn more or to give a financial gift, go to www.jfon-ne.org.

Cover the net for World Malaria Day
As World Malaria Day approaches on April 25, Imagine No Malaria is asking supporters to #CovertheNet to raise awareness across social media networks about this killer disease that claims the life of a child every 60 seconds.
Imagine No Malaria has created resources that make it easy for advocates to create social media buzz about this life-saving cause. Here’s how you can join the effort to help us #CovertheNet:
•Add a special World Malaria Day Twibbon (a photo in the corner of your profile picture) to your Twitter and/or Facebook profile photos to spread the world and let people know you support the cause. (Get your Twibbon)
•Help shout out a powerful message on Twitter and Facebook via Thunderclap. If enough people sign up to support it, Thunderclap will blast out a timed Facebook post or tweet from Imagine No Malaria supporters on April 25 — all at the same time — creating a giant wave of attention. (Join the Thunderclap)
•Change your Facebook cover image using the one posted on Imagine No Malaria’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/imaginenomalaria. Like the page and check back during the week leading up to World Malaria Day for shareable videos and photo posts.
•#CovertheNet with prayers for those at risk of death from malaria by posting a prayer on Imagine No Malaria’s Facebook wall on or leading up to April 25.
Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary ministry of the people of The United Methodist Church that is dedicated to eliminating deaths from malaria in Africa through prevention, treatment, education and communication. Through generous support, this goal has never been closer in reach. Malaria’s death rate is half of what it was in 2006; however, there is more work to be done as this preventable disease still claims a life every 60 seconds.
To learn more, follow Imagine No Malaria on Facebook, go to Twibbon, or join the conversation online using the hashtag #CoverTheNet.

United Methodist Churches host events with Nebraskans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty
Editor's note: The following was submitted by Andrea Paret, Great Plains peace with justice coordinator.
“We believe the death penalty denies the power of Christ to redeem, restore and transform all human beings.” UM Social Principles ¶164 G
First UMC in Lexington, Neb., and Memorial UMC in McCook, Neb., are welcoming Curtis McCarty to share about his life and help us learn about alternatives to the death penalty.
Curtis Edward McCarty was exonerated in 2007 after serving 21 years — including 19 years on death row — for a 1982 Oklahoma City murder he did not commit. McCarty was convicted twice and sentenced to death three times based on prosecutorial misconduct and bad forensics. Narrowly escaping an execution, it was only a lucky break that allowed McCarty to prove his actual innocence. Since his release, he has worked tirelessly to support efforts to repeal the death penalty in Nebraska, throughout the country and around the world.
McCarty will be at First UMC in Lexington, Neb., on Tuesday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m., and at Memorial UMC in McCook, Neb., on Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m.
