10-13 Joshua did what Moses ordered in order to fight Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went to the top of the hill. It turned out that whenever Moses raised his hands, Israel was winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, Amalek was winning. But Moses’ hands got tired. So they got a stone and set it under him. He sat on it and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. So his hands remained steady until the sun went down. Joshua defeated Amalek and its army in battle.
14 God said to Moses, “Write this up as a reminder to Joshua, to keep it before him, because I will most certainly wipe the very memory of Amalek off the face of the Earth.”
15-16 Moses built an altar and named it “God My Banner.” He said,
Salute God’s rule!
God at war with Amalek
Always and forever!

A battle is raging. The pressure is on. Strategic decisions need to be made or lives will be lost. Now is the time for leadership to stand out and make an impression. But where is Moses? Why isn’t he leading the troops, giving direction, planning out strategy? Instead, Moses heads for the hills along with Aaron and Hur.
Moses isn’t avoiding the battle; he is facing the battle in a different way. With Aaron and Hur on each side, Moses’ uplifted hands were an appeal to God that made the difference to those on the front lines.
When facing a difficult situation, our first response might be to take immediate action; to check our inventory of weapons and plan out a strategy. But as David knew when he faced Goliath, the battle isn’t won by sword or spear but by the powerful presence of the Lord working in and through His people.
Next time you face a difficult situation, take time behind the scenes to lift up your hands before God. Have one or two join you in prayer; as Jesus said, “where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20)
Hymn for Today:
“Take Time To Be Holy” by William D. Longstaff1. Take time to be holy,
speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in him always,
and feed on his word.
Make friends of God's children,
help those who are weak,
forgetting in nothing
his blessing to seek.
2. Take time to be holy,
the world rushes on;
spend much time in secret
with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus,
like him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct
his likeness shall see.
3. Take time to be holy,
let him be thy guide,
and run not before him,
whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow,
still follow the Lord,
and, looking to Jesus,
still trust in his word.
4. Take time to be holy,
be calm in thy soul,
each thought and each motive
beneath his control.
Thus led by his spirit
to fountains of love,
thou soon shalt be fitted
for service above.
