Greetings RezDowntowners!
I hope you have had a great Friday! For most Friday is the beginning of the weekend for most, but for Wendy and I, Friday is the one day a week that we take off. With worship services and activities on Saturday and Sunday, Fridays have become a day of rest for us…but not today. We spent the better part of today pulling weeds from our inherited garden. I couldn’t believe the amount of weeds we had to pull! At first it was fun, but quickly it became frustrating as no matter how many weeds we pulled, there always seemed to be more to pull. It was like we weren’t even making a dent. I don’t know if you ever feel that way, but sometimes our walk of faith feels that way, especially when it comes to the words we use. All week long I’ve been holding onto Paul’s words from Ephesians 4:29, "Let no evil talk come out of your mouth, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, that your words may give grace to those who hear." I’ve tried to be mindful of my words, that they might build others up and offer life to those around me. The words we use are essential our walk of faith. My hope is that you will continue to focus on your words and continue the pray with me, saying, “Lord, May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be measured and found to be acceptable in thy sight.”
As we head into the weekend, we have a few exciting things happening in the life of our church. First, this week, I’m excited to share that we had over 100 people sign up and participate in the first of several new community groups. We will have more launching this week as well. If you are looking to make connections within this community and grow in your faith, please consider becoming a part of one of our community groups. Second, given the rise in worship attendance and your important feedback, we have decided to move our 11:15 worship service at 1508 Grand up one hour to 10:15am beginning September 14th. With that change in time, we have also decided to add Childcare at our Grand location as well! Resurrection Downtown is committed to building Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people can become deeply committed Christians. One of the ways we live into this purpose is by attending different worship services. Within the next few weeks we’ll be inviting people from our 10:45 worship service to consider making 10:15 your new worship service.
In the meantime, here are several ways to get connected in the life of our community:
More Than Sunday – YUP’s study by Pastor Scott. Join other Young and UnProfessionals on Wednesdays starting Aug. 27, at 7 pm at 1522 McGee in the loft, as we discover and discuss ways to go beyond the walls of the church. We will look at the various ways to live out our faith each day of the week, and uncover why the life of faith, purpose and mission extend beyondSunday. The YUP’s are looking to build a community among young adults 19-35ish that involves more than just Sunday. No registration required! For questions, contact Jackie.Thomas@cor.org.
Register Now for our “Love to Serve” Volunteer Celebration as we join together on Tuesday,Sept. 2, at 7 pm to celebrate our current volunteers and welcome new ones. Volunteers make all the ministries happen and are a blessing to the church. This will be an evening for “thank yous” and community building! Join us to hear from Pastor Scott, meet the team leaders, have some fun, enjoy treats and get an awesome t-shirt! If you currently volunteer or you’ve been considering taking this step, we’d love to have you there. Please let us know you’re coming atrezdowntown.org/lovetoserve. For more information, contact Jackie.Thomas@rezdowntown.org.
Amazing Bus Challenge – Each day nearly 50,000 people in Kansas City depend on the bus for transportation. Many people who attend Rez Downtown ride the bus, but many people have never used The Metro Bus System. We will be holding an Amazing Bus Challenge on Saturday morning,Sept. 6, that provides an opportunity to see firsthand this vital transportation system in our city. Participants will be organized in teams that will meet at 1522 McGee at 9 am. After coffee and donuts, each team will receive a list of three stops: one of our city’s public libraries, one of our mission partners, and, time permitting, a retail provider. Team members will work together to plan a pedestrian and bus route to visit each of these three sites. Each participant should bring $3 (exact change) to obtain a bus pass for the day. After stopping at each of their assigned sites, teams will meet back at the church for pizza and conversation. Additionally, during the gathering at the end of the event, donations will be collected to purchase bus passes to be distributed by one of our mission organizations. Please register at rezdowntown.org/amazingbuschallenge. If you have questions, contact Ellen Pantaenius at ellen.pantaenius@huschblackwell.com.
We Are Having Our Own Time Change! It’s not time to change your clocks yet, but it is time to reset your alarm for Sept. 14, when our Sunday worship service at 1508 Grand will change from11:15 am to its new time of 10:15 am. We are hoping this time will be more convenient and would love to have you check out this Grand service if you haven’t already. It has a great intimate feel and gives you a new option on Sundays! Childcare available for infants – kindergarten, starting Sept. 14.
NO KiDSCOR on Labor Day Weekend – Next weekend Aug. 30/31 will be a Family FriendlyWorship Weekend – a time to enjoy worship with your children. Nursery will beavailable for infants to 4 years of age.
Want to Learn More About Resurrection? Considering membership? The first step is to attend Coffee with the Pastors with Scott Chrostek and Todd Maberry. Our next Coffee is Sunday, Sept. 7, 1:30 pm at 1522 McGee. Learn more about the church, get to know our pastors and review expectations regarding membership. Free childcare is available. No need to register for the event, but if you need childcare, registration is required by contacting Erin.Sorensen@cor.org.

Save the Date for Resurrection Downtown’s First Men’s Retreat! Oct. 17/18 – Bring your friends and join other men for a couple days of camping and guy stuff. Look for more information to come.
Employment Opportunity – KiDS COR is hiring a Childcare Classroom Leader to help with both of our evening services and all Sunday morning services. To assist with infants – kindergarten at either or both evening services from 4:30-6:30, or the Sunday service from 8:30 am –12:30 pm, apply online at cor.org/employment.
I am so blessed to be a part of this community and I am so proud to serve Christ with you in this city. I am so thankful to be a part of such a dynamic and life-giving community of people like you. I'm looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend, but until then, have a great and God-filled weekend!
(Oh yeah, Pastor Adam and Danny O'Neill challenged me to the ALS Bucket Challenge and this happened yesterday...watch and enjoy if you're on Facebook!)
Grace and Peace,
Scott
