Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Thursday, 28 August 2014 "Zephaniah (We're almost at the end of the OT)"
The Lord your God is with you, God is mighty to save.  God will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17).
Zephaniah is like many of the prophetic books; it begins with a strong, very strong word of judgment, showing just how strongly God feels about wrong doing, oppression of others, sin.  And then, once the judgment has come, there is the beautiful sense we have above of God's love, mercy and delight.
I'm so grateful God's last word is a word of mercy, aren't you!  And, I'm grateful I know how God feels about things that aren't right.  Somehow I always knew how my parents felt about certain things being wrong; I generally didn't do them, but occasionally when/if I did, and if they were things that might have harmed me or another person, I was punished, but that was always followed by mercy; in fact, the "punishment" in retrospect really was a kind of mercy - thanks, Mom and Dad.
