Leawood, Kansas, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection eNote with Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 12 September 2014
Dear Resurrection Family,
Yesterday morning I attended the dedication of the completed 9/11 Memorial at the Overland Park Fire Training Center at 12401 Hemlock. You were recognized at the dedication for your role in helping make this beautiful remembrance possible. There were a number of Resurrection members present. I want to encourage you to stop by and see this memorial, it is quite moving. There were Resurrection members who lost a friend, a co-worker or a family member on 9/11. Here's a picture I took of the lowering of the flag at the time of the first attack.
This weekend we will kick off our new six week sermon series, The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul. Here is the video promo link. It's just over 1 minute long, but shows you some of the places I'll take you over the next six weeks. Watch it and then I'd love for you to copy this link and post a note with it on your Facebook wall and tweet about it on Twitter, inviting others to join you for worship this weekend. In this series I'll take you to Turkey, Syria, Greece and Italy, to archaeological ruins and ancient cities that were pivotal in Paul's story, and we'll consider how his life and message speaks to our lives today. Bring your Bible with you to worship and join us in worship this weekend. This weekend we'll give out a map and outline of Paul's life to each worshiper to aid in your study of Paul's life and the reading of his letters.
I wanted you to know that Resurrection's oldest member, Lester Reed, turns 105 this weekend. He's usually in the 7:45 or 10:45 am service and I suspect you'll see him there.
Last weekend I shared Bobbi Jo Reed's story in my sermon, she is the woman who started the Healing House here in Kansas City. Bobbi Jo has written a book about her story called, Beautifully Broken. The book is available in our bookstore this weekend. Here's the link to her book on our online bookstore.
This week the Leawood Planning Commission gave final approval to our building plans. These will be taken to the Leawood City Council in early October. The construction documents are being prepared and we are still on track for breaking ground next March.
We have two fun opportunities for you to serve God by serving others next Saturday morning, September 20: In Leawood we'll have our annual Sacred Steps 5K Run/Walk and Kids' Fun Run. We'll have food and prizes. All who register by this Sunday will receive a t-shirt. I'll be walking in the Run which starts at 8 am. All proceeds benefit clean water projects in Africa.
For all Resurrection motorcycle riders and their friends, there will be a Ride Against Hunger starting from our Blue Springs Campus at 7 am with breakfast and the ride begins at 9 am. Proceeds benefit the Coalition for Kids.
This weekend is the City of Blue Springs annual Fun Fest - their annual town fair. If you are heading out stop by our Resurrection Blue Springs booth and have some of the best barbecue you've ever eaten with their world famous (okay, at least city-famous) barbecue sundae. I'm hungry just writing about it - these are really awesome! Say hi to the volunteers - they are all Resurrection Blue Springs members.
I'm excited about our series on Paul kicking off this weekend. Once again, here's the link to the video promoif you did not see it last weekend. It's just over 1 minute long and in it you'll see some of the places I'll be taking you over the next six weeks.
See you in worship!
Adam
