Sunday's Scripture:
John
6:22-35
John 6:22-24 The next day the crowd that was left behind realized that there had been only one boat, and that Jesus had not gotten into it with his disciples. They had seen them go off without him. By now boats from Tiberias had pulled up near where they had eaten the bread blessed by the Master. So when the crowd realized he was gone and wasn’t coming back, they piled into the Tiberias boats and headed for Capernaum, looking for Jesus.
25 When they found him back across the sea, they said, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “You’ve come looking for me not because you saw God in my actions but because I fed you, filled your stomachs—and for free.
The Bread of Life
27 “Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last.”
28 To that they said, “Well, what do we do then to get in on God’s works?”
29 Jesus said, “Throw your lot in with the One that God has sent. That kind of a commitment gets you in on God’s works.”
30-31 They waffled: “Why don’t you give us a clue about who you are, just a hint of what’s going on? When we see what’s up, we’ll commit ourselves. Show us what you can do. Moses fed our ancestors with bread in the desert. It says so in the Scriptures: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32-33 Jesus responded, “The real significance of that Scripture is not that Moses gave you bread from heaven but that my Father is right now offering you bread from heaven, the real bread. The Bread of God came down out of heaven and is giving life to the world.”
34 They jumped at that: “Master, give us this bread, now and forever!”
35-38 Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life. The person who aligns with me hungers no more and thirsts no more, ever. I have told you this explicitly because even though you have seen me in action, you don’t really believe me. Every person the Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and don’t let go. I came down from heaven not to follow my own whim but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary
John 6:22-35
Verse 22
[22] The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
Who had stood on the other side — They were forced to stay a while, because there were then no other vessels; and they stayed the less unwillingly, because they saw that Jesus was not embarked.
Verse 26
[26] Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
Our Lord does not satisfy their curiosity, but corrects the wrong motive they had in seeking him: because ye did eat - Merely for temporal advantage. Hitherto Christ had been gathering hearers: he now begins to try their sincerity, by a figurative discourse concerning his passion, and the fruit of it, to be received by faith.
Verse 27
[27] Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Labour not for the meat which perisheth — For bodily food: not for that only not chiefly: not at all, but in subordination to grace, faith, love, the meat which endureth to everlasting life. Labour, work for this; for everlasting life. So our Lord expressly commands, work for life, as well as from life: from a principle of faith and love.
Him hath the Father sealed — By this very miracle, as well as by his whole testimony concerning him. See John 3:33. Sealing is a mark of the authenticity of a writing.
Verse 28
[28] Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
The works of God — Works pleasing to God.
Verse 29
[29] Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
This is the work of God — The work most pleasing to God, and the foundation of all others: that ye believe - He expresses it first properly, afterward figuratively.
Verse 30
[30] They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
What sign dost thou? — Amazing, after what they had just seen!
Verse 31
[31] Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Our fathers ate manna — This sign Moses gave them.
He gave them bread from heaven — From the lower sublunary heaven; to which Jesus opposes the highest heaven: in which sense he says seven times, John 6:32,33,38,50,58,62, that he himself came down from heaven.
Verse 32
[32] Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
Moses gave you not bread from heaven — It was not Moses who gave the manna to your fathers; but my Father who now giveth the true bread from heaven. Psalms 78:24.
Verse 33
[33] For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
He that — giveth life to the world - Not (like the manna) to one people only: and that from generation to generation. Our Lord does not yet say, I am that bread; else the Jews would not have given him so respectful an answer, John 6:34.
Verse 34
[34] Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
Give us this bread — Meaning it still, in a literal sense: yet they seem now to be not far from believing.
Verse 35
[35] And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
I am the bread of life — Having and giving life: he that cometh - he that believeth - Equivalent expressions: shall never hunger, thirst - Shall be satisfied, happy, for ever.

Food--a basic need and a joy
I didn't hear about Carol
Walter's wish for bananas firsthand, but I heard about it when I ran into Don
and Meagan Burrows as they were unloading donations from Fresh and Easy last
Tuesday--including a cart FULL of bananas.
It was the kind of usual serendipity
and blessing that surrounds our Shared Bread ministry. After making
plans for Shared Bread to participate in the "Fill 'Er Up Breakfast and
Ministry Fair" by making banana bread, Carol Walter had said,
"Maybe we'll get some bananas this week."
From week-to-week, the
ministry is held up and pulled together by a big group of volunteers, with a
hearty trust that things will come into place. From where I sit, it's a
beautiful combination of hard work and faith--of effort and blessing from
God.
This week, as we begin a
sermon series on "Basic Needs," we will look at some of the ways
our scripture talks about food. Jesus feeds people with miraculous gifts of
regular bread, and with a spiritual bread that feels a deeper hunger. Jesus
sends us to feed others--with food to fill our stomachs and our whole lives.
I hope you will join us in
worship on Sunday (at 8:30 or 10:30), and at the Fill 'Er Up Breakfast at
9:30. Whether you're new or old, involved or on the edges, this is a great
time to share in fellowship and celebration of our rich ministries.

asked us to help them in their effort to provide much needed kits for the
children of Haiti. We will be collecting every Sunday from now until
September 21st.
At the
9:30am hour (on September 21st) we will host a special
missions sewing workshop for parents and children, preparing the tote bags
for our kits.
On September 28th (during the 9:30am hour) there
will be a presentation about UMCOR, and its work
in providing disaster relief around the world; following the
presentation, people of all ages will help assemble the School Kits to sent
to UMCOR to aid its work.
In addition to the School supplies (see above) we need:
- Heavy-duty fabric (denim, corduroy, drapery, fabric etc)
for the bags
- $$ to help cover shipping costs.
Thank you for supporting our Children

"Fill 'Er Up!" Sunday by Bob Peterson
This Sunday, September 7 is an important day as all classes, groups and people of various interests not only resume their fall schedule, but you can come early and get a breakfast, see the various displays and learn about our active church. Hope to see you there about 9:30 AM or so, and at the regular 10:30 AM Sunday worship service.
However, even though schedules change in the summer, one industrious group of our people continue their work every Sunday throughout the year and that is our money counters and tellers. Each Sunday before we leave church after worship the details of the collection bags are recorded, money counted and deposited in the night drop box at the bank. You may know that there are three teams of us led by Gary Baughman, Paul Caldwell and myself, each taking a month of active work followed by two months off. We are supported by two or three dedicated people, long time church workers who open your envelope, record the amount contributed, make certain it is credited properly to the correct accounts (budget, specials, youth, etc.) and then verify that the money banked and the records balance. Those doing this work are Karen Baughman, George and Peggy Mercer, Eloise Elder with Gary); David Klinger, Todd Potter (with Paul); Pat Godfrey, June Shors, Duff Means (with me).
Now, after we have done this work each Sunday, Samantha Kaiser and Marilyn Smalley try to make sense of our records and prepare quarterly finance reports for you to see about your giving records.
Once in a while others are recruited to help but the above have been doing this many years. This is just one of the small groups helping our church exist, and there are many others, choir, Sunday school teachers, study groups, food preparation (see this Sunday breakfast), worship and I am certain to have missed people. We thank them all and urge you to find your niche to help our church in its many many areas of service. These many volunteers aid the staff in keeping our church functioning and progressing. Please join us all.
