Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Wednesday, 10 September 2014 "Greatest Sermon Ever"
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3).
And so begins the greatest sermon ever given. We know these words as part of the Beatitudes, which are part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, which we believe to be the wisest teachings ever given by the wisest teacher who ever lived.
To be sure, over the years, these words have been shrouded in an aura - to the point that these teachings are "honored" but not truly valued as the wisest way to live. If the world took seriously these words and lived by them... Heck, if we, the Church took them seriously and sought to live by them, what a different place this would be, and what different people we would be.
So, all excuses aside, let's do it; let's really do it: live the words that Jesus gave us. Remember, he ended his sermon by telling us that if we did what he taught, we would be "like a wise man who built his house on the rock." So, let's do it.
