Dear Friends, starting on Wednesday Evening, September 10, and for the following 5 Wednesdays, I will be leading a discussion of Adam Hamilton's latest book: Making Sense of the Bible. After a couple of weeks of understanding the Biblical foundations, we will look at some controversial topics like: The Bible and Science; Violence and Suffering, and What the Bible says about
homosexuality? My only request is that if you plan to attend these last discussions, that you also attend as many of the prior ones that you can, because the Biblical Foundation is essential to the discussion.
These discussions will be in the worship center, banquet side, starting at 6:30, and will follow the Wednesday Night Dinners, which we hope you will attend as well;
The dinners begin at 5:30. If you're unable to attend, you can join the discussion by following a blog that I will create for this time together. Directions for this will
be forthcoming soon. Also, Rev. Esther will be reflecting on Adam's book in her preaching at the 6:35 service, so that's another avenue.
Some of you know that a group of United Methodists have issued a statement calling for a schism or separation in the UM Church over the issue of human sexuality. I think that would be a terrible mistake, based on the teaching of Jesus for unity (John 17) and Paul's many admonitions toward unity. Accordingly, I have been involved with Adam and a few others in writing a proposal for maintaining our unity; it's called "A Way Forward." 90% of United Methodists believe we should stay united; there are too many good things that we are doing as a united church: our missions and outreach relief (UMCOR), our seminaries,
universities, hospitals, our testimony to the world, to allow a difference of opinion over this one complex issue to divide us. Just as we have differing opinions around this issue here at Trinity, and yet stay together as one body of Christ, so, I believe, should the larger United Methodist Church. In addition, we are surely aware that many in our own church are personally
connected with matters of human sexuality in their lives and families, and it's time we have thoughtful, and hopefully, helpful discussions around this topic.
Adam Hamilton's book is available in our bookstore and online. True to good Trinity culture, this will be a lively, helpful and thoughtful time of discussion, and I hope many of you will join me on Sept. 10 and the following 5 Wednesdays.

Associate Pastors
A Word from Rev. Esther: September is here and a lot
is on the horizon. I'm thankful for everything that you all do for God
and this church community -- we couldn't do it without you -- so I'm looking
forward to celebrating our volunteers this week at the dinner on
Wednesday. That same day at 6:35 p.m. in the chapel we'll be concluding
our series on Comm(unity) with a talk on Hebrews 10: 19-25 - Hope for the
Church: a community unlike any other. This will be followed by Coffee
Talk who'll be meeting in the Youth Building to watch the movie 'Blue Like
Jazz.' I hope you have a blessed week - I'm praying for you.

Missions
 This week's Mission Box is
for Young Life Gainesville. Young Life is a world-class organization for adolescents.
The staff and volunteers enter the world of kids, focusing on what matters to
them - fun, adventure, friendship and a sense of significance. In doing so,
they earn the privilege of talking to them about something that we think
matters most of all - the truth about God and His love for them.
Are you interested in
going in helping make a difference in the lives of nine families?
November 1-8, 2014 Trinity is taking a team to Port au Prince, Haiti to build
the homes for the families we raised money for this summer with VBS and the
Mission Box challenge. If you are interested please contact Ted
Grueser in the Missions Department to learn more or sign-up. This
will be an experience that will change your life.
 Trinity is once again
partnering with Alachua
Habitat for Humanity and other local churches to build a
third Interfaith House. This home will be built for a needy family at
1027 NW 31st Avenue and on September 27 we will have the opportunity to
volunteer with the start up. Please save this date. Contact

Small groups are in full
swing now! High school girls' small group and middle school boys' small
group meet on Wednesday, and middle school girls' group starts back

Children's Ministries
CHEERS begins TOMORROW! Children in grades

 Would you like your child
baptized? Baptism is one of the two sacraments in the United Methodist
Church. All parents are asked to participate in a Baptism Orientation
prior to the baptism of their child. The next Baptism Orientation will
be held Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 am in the Children's Ministries Office (Room
E108). Join us for "Pajama Movie Night" at our next Parent's Night Out on Friday, September 12, from 5:30-8:30! It will be a fabulous night of wearing your favorite pj's, watching a terrific movie, eating pizza and participating in fun activities! We will be exploring what it means to be an acolyte as well as practicing the acolyte's role on a Sunday morning. There will be a sign-up sheet available for those children who would like to be part of this wonderful ministry.  Rejoice registration is underway.
Rejoice is a musical program for elementary aged children Kindergarten
- 5th grade. Rejoice meets on Wednesday afternoons
from 2:00 - 4:00. The children will learn a musical including
singing, dancing, drama and more. This Fall we will be doing the
production "Arkeology" (Noah's Ark told by the animals). Go online and sign up

Adult Ministries
 Joint Ventures will resume THIS Sunday,
September 7 (NEW TIME - 11 am; rm E222) and will begin a study called The 5 Love Languages.
This group is for couples who are contemplating marriage, engaged, recently
married or married for years who desire to have Christ as the chief
cornerstone in their lives.
Women Growing in Faith
will begin on September 9 (6:30 - 8:30 pm; rm 232). They will be
studying Faith, Abundant,

 Deepen your knowledge of
the Biblical story and Christian Beliefs! Disciple presents
the overview of God's relationship with human beings and Christian Believer
presents how humans have come to understand who God is and who we are in
relation to God. Time is running out to sign up for these great
studies!Disciple I is a dynamic and powerful 34-week overview of the Biblical story (book $40). There are still slots available in both the Tuesday evening class (7 pm) and the Sunday afternoon class (3 pm), please just come and we will get you situated. Disciple IV is a 32-week in depth study of the Writings, The Gospel of John, and Revelation (books $40). Christian Believer is a 30-week study of Christian beliefs and is about "knowing God with heart and mind." (book $45) All three classes meet on Tuesdays beginning today, September 2 at 7 pm. An afternoon class of Disciple I is also offered on Sundays. Register online for any of these courses. |

General Announcements
 Boy Scout Troop 454 - If you have a boy in 6th
grade or older who is interested in camping, community service, character
building and learning leadership skills you may want to visit our troop
meetings for further information. Boy Scout Troop 454 meets every
Monday night (except school holidays) in the Youth Building from 7:30-9pm. If
you need further information please call Curtis Kirby at 316-1406.
We will be starting a Bereavement Support Group,
which is open to all any anyone who is dealing with loss of a loved
one. The meetings will start September 10 and continue for 13 weeks in
room 226 from 6:30 to 8 pm We will be using materials from Grief Share which
involves a DVD and an accompanying workbook. Contact is Richard

New Art Exhibit - This Wood Will Turn Your Head Jim McMullen has graciously shared some of the wood turnings that he has made over the years. There are 27 beautiful works of art masquerading as bowls, goblets and platters located in the Art Display case on the second floor of the Education Building in the new wing. Time limited.  Discover Trinity Photo Day is Sunday, September 7.

after each worship service. Look for the Resurrection Ferns growing on
the top of the large tree branches. Find the Chimney Wall that was part of
the original homestead on the property.Pick up a packet that contains a map to guide you to photo opportunities, a small bottle of water and a small snack at one of two hospitality centers -- one in the front, outside the kitchen on the corner, and the other, in the back near the Children's Playground. "Trinity member, Carter Nute, will teach the AARP Smart Driver Course
in a one day session convenient for Trinity United Methodist Church members
in the Education Building Room 222 on Monday, September 22. This classroom
refresher for motorists age 50 and older is offered for a modest fee and you
do not have to be an AARP member to register for the class. For course

E-Message: "A Conversation About Contemporary Worship Music" for Tuesday, 2 September 2014
Friends, It seems to me that it is important for those of us who have been established, long time followers of Jesus to welcome the opportunities to embrace the new, to look for new ways to reach more people for Christ and his Church. And so, we've been having this conversation about a newer type of music, one that the data shows is clearly what lots of young people want. You have sent me lots of emails; many that share how much you love the new, contemporary music, how it touches your soul, and some that share your frustration with it, because it doesn't connect with your spirit. Below is one I received just this morning that I want to share with you:
"Hi Dan,
This is a rather young town. The contemporary service will bring in the younger group. As you know, I'm a house director for a sorority. A lot of the girls and their friends go to The Anthem, because it does reach out to them. If contemporary music is how they have a connection with Jesus, isn't that what church is all about?
I did hear from a friend that visited- she asked if their were any young folks that attended TUMC. She is attracted to the contemporary style services. (She's in her mid 50's). I think TUMC is heading in the right direction if they want to continue to grow.

When our kids were young, we took them to concerts we wouldn't particularly enjoy, why? Because we loved them and wanted to enter and know and affirm them and their world.
Our oldest Grandson loves the Divergent book series; just loves it; talks about it a lot. So, when the movie came out, Jan and I went to see it; why? so we could enter his world, affirm who he is, and oh my, what a powerful connection it has been for us with him. I put aside my wants in order to experience what was important to him, and, as it turns out, I really enjoyed the movie, but more than that, I'll forever appreciate the new connection I have with my Grandson, the reality that he knows I value him enough to try to enter his world.
In a way, that's what you and I are being called by God to do, isn't it?
