Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Wednesday, 12 November 2014 "CHANGING THE WORLD"
When Joseph’s brothers, jealous of their father’s attentions to him, threw him into a pit, Genesis 37:27 His brother, Judah, said, “Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites”, and he traveled to Egypt bound into slavery. Little did they know that he would appear to them later in life as the discerning and wise man set by Pharaoh over the land able to save his family from famine with Egypt’s grain stores.
Mathew 1:5 (From the genealogy of Jesus) Salmon, the father of Boaz, whose Mother was Rahab, the prostitute.
She was considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to Hebrew spies. James 2:25 Rahab was elevated to a position of honor in the genealogy of Jesus.
Slavery and prostitution are not unknown today. There are 22 million engaged in human trafficking today with 32 billion dollars profit in this occupation. Florida is #3 in the United States.
The Spirit of God seems to be at work in our community as we bring greater awareness of the problem of human trafficking, prostitution, which is slavery. At a recent meeting of the Alachua County Coalition Against Human Trafficking (ACCAHT) the members are being trained to go out into the community and 13 Federal initiatives now strengthen law enforcement. Those saved from this nefarious practice are no longer considered “victims”, but are “survivors”. More can and will be done to turn the tide. I'm grateful I was able to take special training in this area and that our church/UMW is so involved in helping eradicate this tragedy.
“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”[James 2:25](Susan W. Shafer)
