School Concerts and Church Attendance We attended the choral concert for our daughter last night. All of the middle school’s choirs and the orchestra performed in the same program. They were set up in the cafetorium and there were rows and rows of uncomfortable chairs for the audience. It seemed everyone was saving seats for those arriving later and were vigorously defending them from people looking for a spot. There was little sense of community in the room. We all came with a specific agenda – to see our kid perform – and were ready to go after that happened. It was easy to get distracted by all of the people walking around, those who kept going in and out of our tightly-packed rows and looking at what people were or were not wearing. We left after achieving one major accomplishment – simply attending. How often can church be like this – people gathering to sit in uncomfortable places, telling others “that is my seat”, a bunch of individuals sharing little community, everyone with their own agenda (“I hope they sing my favorite song”, “I hope the choir/band is on today because that is why I come”, “hurry up and finish all the preliminaries so we can get to the sermon”, etc.), little focus so it is easy to get distracted and people happy to hear the final song so they can check going to church off their list? How much better when people are comfortable enough to be able to focus, welcome the opportunity to meet new people, embrace their part in the larger community, overcome personal likes and dislikes and see the greater picture, embrace a common vision and carry the church service with them throughout the week. What steps will you take to make it this way in your church? A Gift Idea for Your Church You can help change the future through an investment in your church, your pastor and or yourself. Just as athletes who want to perform better are assisted by a coach, so are individuals, leaders and churches. A coaching relationship can help you overcome obstacles and achieve goals. Your coach helps you clarify where you want to go and the steps you will follow to get there. The journey of personal and institutional transformation is challenging and there is no reason to try to walk it alone.
