Epiphany coincides with a shift in the length of our days—the daylight hours becoming longer in the northern hemisphere while there is a corresponding lessening of sunlight in the southern hemisphere. As followers of Jesus, celebrating Epiphany is a time of wondering about what is revealed due to the light of God.
The South African hymn, Siyahamaba, or "We Are Marching in the Light of God," is one, which the Zulu of South Africa sung as perseverance and protest against the apartheid system. How might our marching, both in the sanctuary and in the street, be with a sense of renewed purpose this Epiphany? What might God want us to pay attention to as the light revealed in Jesus Christ dawns ever more brightly on our world?
God of Light, just as your people Israel marched in the daylight towards the promised land, so, too, give us strength to persevere, march and work as citizens in your kingdom. Amen.
