13 Be alert and think straight. Put all your hope in how kind God will be to you when Jesus Christ appears. 14 Behave like obedient children. Don’t let your lives be controlled by your desires, as they used to be. 15 Always live as God’s holy people should, because God is the one who chose you, and he is holy. 16 That’s why the Scriptures say, “I am the holy God, and you must be holy too.”
17 You say that God is your Father, but God doesn’t have favorites! He judges all people by what they do. So you must honor God while you live as strangers here on earth. 18 You were rescued[a] from the useless way of life that you learned from your ancestors. But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don’t last forever. 19 You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb. 20 Christ was chosen even before the world was created, but because of you, he did not come until these last days. 21 And when he did come, it was to lead you to have faith in God, who raised him from death and honored him in a glorious way. That’s why you have put your faith and hope in God.
22 You obeyed the truth,[b] and your souls were made pure. Now you sincerely love each other. But you must keep on loving with all your heart. 23 Do this because God has given you new birth by his message that lives on forever. 24 The Scriptures say,
“Humans wither like grass,
and their glory fades
like wild flowers.
Grass dries up,
and flowers fall
to the ground.
25 But what the Lord has said
will stand forever.”
Our good news to you is what the Lord has said.[Footnotes:
1.18 rescued: The Greek word often, though not always, means payment of a price to free a slave or prisoner.
1.22 You obeyed the truth: Some manuscripts add “by the power of the Spirit.”]
"Redeemed By His Blood" by Phil Pinckard
What does “redeemed by His blood” mean? With regard to Christ’s shed blood, redemption essentially means deliverance from death by means of payment of a very high price. The imagery emerges from the marketplace. To redeem is to buy back, whether as a purchase or a ransom price.
Although ancient Israel’s deliverance from Egypt was national in scope, God’s deliverance is also very personal. Elisha Hoffman wrote, “We are redeemed; the price is paid.” The Apostle Paul affirms this fact, “In him [Jesus Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us (Ephesians 1:7-8a).
Jesus Christ, through His atoning sacrifice on the cross, provides complete redemption for all who place their faith fully in Him. John Wesley commented, “All our faith and hope proceed from the power of his resurrection. . . . Without Christ we should only dread God; whereas through him we believe, hope, and love.”*[* John Wesley, Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament, London: Epworth Press, 1966 (reprint), 1 Peter 1:21, 876.]
Hymn for Today: "Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it" by Fanny Crosby (1882)
1. Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am.
Chorus:
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
His child, and forever, I am.
2. Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus,
No language my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell.
Chorus:
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
His child, and forever, I am.
3. I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long;
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.
Chorus:
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
His child, and forever, I am.
4. I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose law I delight;
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps
And giveth me songs in the night.
Chorus:
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, (redeemed,) redeemed, (redeemed,)
His child, and forever, I am.
