Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Florida, United States Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Wednesday, 28 January 2015 "The Foundry"
"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? (James 2:14).
At the urging of his friend, George Whitefield, John Wesley began "field preaching" - where he preached to the lower classes - people who didn't feel welcomed in churches - to coal miners on their way to the pit mines, to prisoners and persons on the street. This brought him into contact with children who were impoverished. What to do to help?
Wesley knew he needed a place, and God led him to a defunct armament building called the Foundry. And as God does with so many things, He enabled Wesley to turn this from a place of destruction to a place of amazing ministry and outreach: a fund to make small loans, a medical clinic for the poor, a school for children who roamed the streets, as well as worship services for 1,000 people - the space was versatile - much like ours at Trinity, and Wesley used the space 7 days a week, just as we do.
For Wesley, evangelism and ministries to the poor were inseparable. As much or more than any other Christian leader, Wesley combined two areas that are too often separated:
1. Heart and Hand - evangelism and works of mercy
2. Heart and Head - faith and knowledge
3. I and others - my personal faith and small group accountability
4. Grace and Works
5. Love and Holiness - Holy Love
