Sunday's Scripture:
Mark 1:29-39

Scripture Text: Mark 1: Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law

29 After leaving the synagogue, Jesus, James, and John went home with Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed, sick with a fever, and they told Jesus about her at once. 31 He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she served them.
Jesus’ ministry spreads
32 That evening, at sunset, people brought to Jesus those who were sick or demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered near the door. 34 He healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases, and he threw out many demons. But he didn’t let the demons speak, because they recognized him.
35 Early in the morning, well before sunrise, Jesus rose and went to a deserted place where he could be alone in prayer. 36 Simon and those with him tracked him down. 37 When they found him, they told him, “Everyone’s looking for you!”
38 He replied, “Let’s head in the other direction, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there too. That’s why I’ve come.” 39 He traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and throwing out demons.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
Mark 1:29-39
Verse 29
[29] And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
Matthew 8:14; Luke 4:38.
Verse 32
[32] And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
When the sun was set — And, consequently, the Sabbath was ended, which they reckoned from sunset to sunset.
Verse 33
[33] And all the city was gathered together at the door.
And the whole city was gathered together at the door — O what a fair prospect was here! Who could then have imagined that all these blossoms would die away without fruit?
Verse 34
[34] And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.
He suffered not the devils to say that they knew him — That is, according to Dr. Mead's hypothesis, (that the Scriptural demoniacs were only diseased persons,) He suffered not the diseases to say that they knew him!
Verse 35
[35] And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
Rising a great while before day — So did he labour for us, both day and night. Luke 4:42.

Sermon Story "The Infant Jesus Presented in the Temple" by Gary Lee Parker with Sermon Test  for Monday, 2 February 2015
Scripture Texts: Luke 2:22 When the time came for their ritual cleansing, in accordance with the Law from Moses, they brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. (23 It’s written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male will be dedicated to the Lord.”) 24 They offered a sacrifice in keeping with what’s stated in the Law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.[a]
Simeon’s response to Jesus
25 A man named Simeon was in Jerusalem. He was righteous and devout. He eagerly anticipated the restoration of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 The Holy Spirit revealed to him that he wouldn’t die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple area. Meanwhile, Jesus’ parents brought the child to the temple so that they could do what was customary under the Law. 28 Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God. He said,
29 “Now, master, let your servant go in peace according to your word,
30     because my eyes have seen your salvation.
31 You prepared this salvation in the presence of all peoples.
32 It’s a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and a glory for your people Israel.”
33 His father and mother were amazed by what was said about him. 34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “This boy is assigned to be the cause of the falling and rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that generates opposition 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your innermost being too.”
Anna’s response to Jesus
36 There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, who belonged to the tribe of Asher. She was very old. After she married, she lived with her husband for seven years. 37 She was now an 84-year-old widow. She never left the temple area but worshipped God with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 She approached at that very moment and began to praise God and to speak about Jesus to everyone who was looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
Jesus as a child in Nazareth
39 When Mary and Joseph had completed everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to their hometown, Nazareth in Galilee. 40 The child grew up and became strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.[Footnotes:
Luke 2:24 Lev 12:8; 5:11 LXX
Joseph and Mary was good Jews. They were married even though they both had a vision that Mary would be pregnant without any help from a man, but conceived by the Holy Spirit of God. We know that Joseph followed the Law or torah because when he heard that Mary was pregnant, but not by him, he wanted to put her away quietly without her being stoned for adultery until God revealed to him that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit of God. Now, Mary and joseph both knew that the first child born to a woman, even though Joseph was not the physical father, that the child was given to the Lord for God's Holy puposes. After 40 days of being unclean according to the Torah, they went to the Temple to give the burnt offerings as required by the Torah to make Mary, the woman, clean according to the Torah. At this time, they were surprised by an old man, Simeon, and an old woman, Anna. First, simeon say Mary and Joseph with the infant Jesus saying that God can let him dy because he has seen the Promise Messiah of God who will redeem His people, Israel, from their sins. He went on to prophesy that Jesus would cause many Israelites to rise or fall according to their own faith that Jesus is the Messiah. Then, he turned to Mary and said that the suffering of Jesus would pierce her own heart, but be not afraid. Next, Anna came and began to prophesy of Jesus being the Messiah and blessing Mary and Joseph as Simeon did. How would you respond if your were in Mary and Joseph's shoes? How would you respond if you were in Simeon or Anna's shoes? How do you respond to Jesus as the Messiah for the Jews and all the Gentiles as well? We come to sing the Hymn "Long-Awaited Holy One" by Delores Dufner, O.S.B. (b.1939)
1. Long-awaited Holy One,
Simeon hailed you as God’s Son.
Anna welcomed you with praise,
Glad fulfillment of her days.
2. Light of all the nations, shine!
Show, to those who wait, a sign:
God on earth, our host and guest,
In our flesh made manifest.
3. Radiance of God’s holy face,
Shine your love in ev’ry place.
Splendor of God’s glory bright,
Lead us to eternal light!

Church leaders in front of our giant, small church at "If We Build It..." last Saturday.
A Giant, Small Church--Covered with Ministries and Dreams
I was energized by our "If We Build It..." event this past Saturday. A great group gathered--a diversity of voices, ages and perspectives came together to name ways that our church has been doing amazing ministry, and to dream about what we might be called to next.
We started with questions that asked us to consider how we're doing the big stuff of church: serving others, growing spiritually, caring for one another, welcoming people. Then, we explored the campus, going to spaces all over our church, and recalling what ministry happens there--before dreaming about how we might use our space for ministry in new ways. Finally, we turned to questions that connect to our particular time and church: about our ministries with young people, our Sunday morning 9:30 hour, what it means to be a member, and our intergenerational life.
As the small groups discussing these topics reported back, their conversation was noted on big pieces of cardboard. As the morning continued, these boards were built into a giant, small church building (and bell tower!), covered with our ministry assets and our new ideas.
We've been inviting people to read over the ideas named, and place stickers to "vote" for the ideas they're most excited about. You can still do that on Sunday(and we hope you will!)
At our Church Council meeting next week (Monday the 9th at 7pm), we'll look over the suggestions, and begin to chart some goals and plans for moving forward--looking to our existing committees as well as new groups.
The giant, small church is really fun to see--a significant structure, and an engaging way to see the ideas of our community. I also love that it's a reminder that the church is so much more than a building--it's ministries and it's community. Thank you for being a part of that.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
Last Sunday, we celebrated Soup-er Bowl Sunday, in support of Shared Bread; we'll have the collection boxes for donated food and funds out again this Sunday, since the 8:30 service was cancelled. (And we've heard that there are a lot of people who'd like to call the play differently at the end of the game...)

We're Building It!!
Last Saturday, leaders and members of our church spent a morning planning and building together at our "If We Build It..." event. The work isn't done, though! We hope you will stop by the Fellowship Hall to see what we built together-a "church" full of ideas and ministry. We want you to be a part of the process. During our morning together, we named strengths of our congregation, and dreams we might work toward together. Now we need your input: stop by the Hall and place your stickers on the big church to mark the ideas and visions that you are excited about. (People of all ages are encouraged to participate!)
Check out photos from the event here. Our deep thanks to everyone who helped plan, build and lead!!
Update: 8:30 Service Last Sunday
This past Sunday, February 1, we were unable to hold our 8:30worship service, as the Police response to a suspicious package prevented access. Starting at about 8:00, for just over an hour, our block of Broadway and our building were affected. Thankfully, the package was not a threat, and the street was reopened before 9:30; we were able to continue to our other activities, including SundaySchool, choir and 10:30 worship. Our apologies to anyone who was unable to reach the church for worship.
Last Day for Valentine's Balloon Bouquets!
This Sunday, Feb 8th, is the last Sunday to sign up for Valentine's Balloon Bouquets, a fundraiser in support of our youth ministries. Alternatively, pick up forms in the church office!
Youth will deliver the bouquets to any address within 3 miles of the church--along with a musical serenade to the recipient--on Friday the 13th, between 4-6pm.
Small Bouquet: $15
Large Bouquet: $20
Parking Reminder: If you are able, we encourage you to park at the Wells Fargo bank on Sunday mornings, and walk across the street, reserving the parking lot for those with mobility challenges or for new visitors. We also have a bike rack on the patio, for those who choose to bike to church! Thanks for your consideration.
New Staff Update:
Welcome, Meagan Callahan!
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is please to announce the hire of Meagan Callahan as an Interim Children and Family Ministry Assistant. This part-time job was previously held by Lisa Perlot, who recently stepped down from the position, but continues to volunteer with Children's Ministries.
We hope you will join us in welcoming Meagan. A recent graduate of the University of Oregon, she is able to fill this interim position while waiting to start graduate school in Physical Therapy. Meagan grew up in this church, and has served in our ministries with young people and our quilt ministry, among other things. She has stepped right into the work of this new job, sharing her gifts and skills in support of this ministry.
We also hope you will join us in offering words of gratitude to Lisa Perlot, who not only served so beautifully in this position, but who continues to offer her gifts and skills as a volunteer here.
Ash Wednesday Worship:
February 18
The United Methodist Churches in our Mission Area are sponsoring a combined Ash Wednesday Worship Service on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30pm. This year, it will be hosted at El Segundo UMC (540 Main St, El Segundo), where Rev. Lee Carlile is pastor.
Members of our choir will join a Mass Choir for the evening, and our own Pastor Molly will be preaching. All ages are welcome, as we mark the beginning of the season of Lent with prayer and worship. The worship service will include imposition of ashes.
2015 Lenten Series and Study:
A Story to Tell
This year, we have stories to share during Lent. Our sermon series and congregational study invite you to look at your own life story, and reflect on how God is at work in your life.
Our scriptures tell the big story of the good news of God's love for us.
Our life stories continue that story of love.
Throughout the season, you will be invited to be listening for and sharing stories of God, of faith, of transformation and of hope.
There are several ways to participate:
We are forming small groups, meeting at various times during the week. These groups will have a chance to tell each other stories, building community, and read key scripture stories together. It will be a meaningful time to learn the stories of our church, and to be more aware of how God is at work with us. Let us know if you're interested through this online form--as we form the groups, we will match you to a time that can work. We encourage you to invite other friends, too!
We invite you to journal through the season; we will give you a prompt for reflection each day, inviting you to recall stories from your own life and family. You can find them on Twitter or Facebook, or pick up a sheet of labels to stick into your own journal each day.
Families and all people will be invited to share in a Round Robin Story-Sharing Journal, passing notebooks from home-to-home, and adding stories at each stop.Sign up (you or your family) here!
We will also find extra ways to tell stories in worship, at fellowship time, and anywhere else!
Lent begins Ash Wednesday (February 18) and continues through Easter on April 5.
Mark Your Calendar:
Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner
Tuesday, February 17
6:00-7:30pm
Our Children and Family Ministries are organizing an all-church pancake dinner on Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday). Join us for this traditional feast of pancakes, including pancake games and a storytime as we prepare to begin the season of Lent.
The event will also benefit the work of Imagine No Malaria.
Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study:
9:30-10:15am
Our Sunday morning Adult Bible study has resumed weekly meetings, now in Health Chapel. Led and coordinated by Helen Stockwell, this group will use an adult study curriculum from Cokesbury. The study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The curriculum helps adults move from a focus on the Word to reflection on personal, family, church, and community concerns.
A class for families (and anyone else):
Understanding Baptism (February 8) &
Understanding Communion (February 15) - 9:30-10:15amin Epworth Lounge
Pastor Molly will lead two interactive classes, designed to help families understand the sacraments: baptism and communion. The classes are designed to help kids and adults learn together about these important parts of our church worship and tradition--people of any age are welcome.
You may attend either or both--these are opportunities to learn about our United Methodist tradition. Come to learn what we believe--and how it's different from other traditions. Deepen your understanding, and help your kids get more out of the worship. This class is also great for grandparents, godparents or friends who want to be able to help young people know more about the sacraments!

Church Finance Update
We are grateful for the generous contributions of so many of you, supporting in our ministries in 2014.
As we move into 2015, we have adopted a budget with only a modest total increase; to fulfill our budget and commitment, we will seek even deeper and broader support. It is not too late to make a pledge of financial giving, either with the card that is in our pew pockets or via our website. Most importantly, it is now a great time to make a priority of giving to the church in our own personal and family budgets--to choose regular giving as a part of our monthly finances.
Thanks for your generosity and support, for your involvement and prayers.

"Take a Look at What We Built" Bob Peterson
It was Saturday, January 31st when over sixty men, women and children answered the call and attended our church "If We Build It..." event as planned by Pastor Molly and Church Council Chair Nina Dooley. From 8 AM to a bit after noon things were happening in the Fellowship Hall and, in fact, all around our church campus. We ate breakfast, were led in prayer by Pastor Molly and sent around in small groups as planned and carried out by Nina Dooley and her team of over thirty leaders and helpers. Our small groups got acquainted, were asked questions about conditions and programs here at church, followed by suggestions and conversation about what we could do better. Imagine more than sixty of our congregation all trying to think of ways to improve our programs and appearance in three different varied small groups, from five to twelve each.
After each session, leaders would report the top three or more results and we would see Ernie Valenzuela or others recording same on four by eight large brown cardboard panels. Then, off we were to another different small group with different questions and discussions. Every age, young and old were involved as we looked at everything from the sanctuary to the Sunday School class rooms, to the kitchens and it even worked like clockwork as planned in advance.
Communications about services and other church events was mentioned, but if one looks at today's church bulletin, it's all there for us to read. Some of the things our church does are written about and some of us just don't take the time to read them.
People mentioned better signage, so perhaps that will be improved to help visitors and others. Hundreds of things were brought up. People reported they didn't realize there were rooms below the May Day Parlor or below the Narthex or below the choir loft. Did you know that?
So, we got educated about our church, We thought about ways to make it more welcoming to visitors or those who live nearby. Some mentioned they liked the old days when our birthdays and anniversaries were mentioned. Others found areas needing paint or carpeting.
Now, like all churches, we have committees that take care of things, but priorities have to be set due to money available because it's easy to see what needs doing, but not so easy to fund it if the money is not enough. Things like Drama Camp can be done, for tuition can be collected. But salaries and supplies may not be what people like to donate to and that limits us a bit. You may be one who is involved enough to help make the decisions. Certainly, many were involved last Saturday and we hope their interests will change our church for the better. If you haven't walked into the Fellowship Hall to see the results of all this build it material, then do so today, It's truly amazing, for when all those cardboard panels were assembled by the men of the team, it really gave us a look at our church, with all the assets, suggestions, etc. inscribed. Of course, the tower is only about 16 feet high, but it is really something to look at. Don't miss it. (Allow 15 minutes minimum.)
