Reflecting God - Embrace Holy Living from The Global Church of the Nazarene of Lenexa, Kansas, United States for Tuesday, 9 June 2015 - "Starting with Powerlessness" Scripture: Psalm 18:(0) For the leader. By David the servant of Adonai, who addressed the words of this song to Adonai on the day when Adonai delivered him from the power of all his enemies, including from the power of Sha’ul. 2 He said:
(1) “I love you, Adonai, my strength!
3 (2) “Adonai is my Rock, my fortress and deliverer,
my God, my Rock, in whom I find shelter,
my shield, the power that saves me,
my stronghold.
4 (3) I call on Adonai, who is worthy of praise;
and I am saved from my enemies.
5 (4) “For the cords of death surrounded me,
the floods of B’liya‘al terrified me,
6 (5) the ropes of Sh’ol were wrapped around me,
the snares of death lay there before me.
16 (15) The channels of water appeared,
the foundations of the world were exposed
at your rebuke, Adonai,
at the blast of breath from your nostrils.
17 (16) “He sent from on high, he took me
and pulled me out of deep water;
18 (17) he rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from those who hated me,
for they were stronger than I.
19 (18) They came against me on my day of disaster,
but Adonai was my support.

"Starting with Powerlessness" Author: Josh Broward
Alcoholics know that the first step of recovery is admitting our powerlessness. Saints know that the first step of holiness is exactly the same. We are in over our heads in this world. We are in trouble. Our enemies–within and without–are far too powerful for us. We are desperate for help. If we are honest, then we will all admit that on our own strength we can’t come close to being the people God calls us to be or even the people we want to be. Eventually, we’ll end up back in the pit; even if it’s the ever so sticky pit of our own deluded self-righteousness.
With classic irony, the first true step upward is to hit rock-bottom. The first step toward true healing is admitting how sick we really are. The first step into holiness is the desperate prayer for help because we finally know, after all our failed attempts, that we cannot help ourselves. It is at this dark and lonely moment that the real rescue begins.
Hymn for Today: "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" by
Elisha A. Hoffman
1. What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
what a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain:
Leaning, leaning,
safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
2. O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain:
Leaning, leaning,
safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
3. What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain:
Leaning, leaning,
safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
