And again Jesus began to teach them beside the Orange Julius at the Galleria Mall. He began to teach them many things using popular sitcoms, DEVO lyrics and bad comedy films, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! The kingdom of heaven is like the film “Brewster’s Millions” starring Richard Pryor.

And again Jesus began to teach them beside the Orange Julius at the Galleria Mall. He began to teach them many things using popular sitcoms, DEVO lyrics and bad comedy films, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! The kingdom of heaven is like the film “Brewster’s Millions” starring Richard Pryor. A man with next to nothing receives a strange offer from a relative he never met. This old uncle tells Brewster that IF he can spend 30 million dollars in 30 days that he will inherit tenfold that amount. Yes, 300 million dollars! But, here is the catch, he can’t buy anything with the money that he will pretend to own later or buy anything that he plans to destroy. He must just spend and give away the money as quickly as he can.” And this is like the kingdom of heaven, Jesus spoke, as the people around him in their parachute pants and pleated culottes began to murmur in wonder.
Jesus continued, “For we are given life, time, possessions, and even breath by God so that we will give it away. It is not ours to hold or keep, but truly our inheritance in heaven depends on how we use these things for others. Not to possess them or to destroy them, but rather to take all these things we have been given by God and to give, share and direct them with others. These gifts from God are like the millions given to Richard Pryor in his funniest role since ‘Bustin Loose’ as he must get rid of all of those dollars for them to mean anything for him.”
“And now I ask you all, how will you give and share and direct all of what you have been given? Can you see yourself like Brewster? Or, moreover, can you really start to see yourself like the sower in Mark 4:1-9 who throws seed with a wild extravagance regardless of where it may land? Are you ready to see your life, your body and your relationships in the same way? As things to be extravagantly used and given back to God in how you share them with others?”
“Let anyone with a tape-deck record these words so that they may play them over and over on their Sony Walkman to know the truth…All you have is to be given and used for the glory of God!”

We have a new small group starting at 9:45am on Sundays! The Parenting Support Group is an informal parents group that meets to discuss the challenges and rewards of parenting. This is a relaxed, free-flowing conversational group with a simple agenda… to give parents a place to talk, encourage and gather while their children are cared for by our excellent childcare team and Sunday School teachers! This group will meet eachSunday, upstairs in the conference room (straight ahead at the top of the stairs.)
Additionally, don’t forget about our Sunday morning Scripture discussion group, also at9:45am! Each week, this group meets to talk about the Scripture we’ll be focusing on in worship at 10:30am, and some time to pray for each other. Led by Heather Ross, this is a casual, but informative Scripture study and small group. This group meets eachSunday in the Social Hall (straight ahead in the double doors off Mansfield Street).
Faith on Tap meets in East County TONIGHT! This month's topic is “Forgiveness.” What is forgiveness? Must we forgive in order to be forgiven by God? We will discuss these things and more this week.
Faith on Tap is our casual beer and faith discussion group. We'll be meeting in Santee at the home of church members, Alisa & Jonathan. If you’d like directions or want more info, please email Alisa! Everyone is welcome at this event.
Our next free pancake breakfast is THIS SUNDAY at 8:30am! Come to serve, talk or just eat! Don't worry about feeding your family, let us do the work. Stick around and check out our Sunday School & Worship Service afterwards if you'd like. Please contact Nancy if you're ready and able to help!
Our Bible Study on the Gospel of Luke has made some positive changes for the Summer! Our meeting has been moved to the church community room, so that we are able to accommodate vacation schedules and more people this season. This ongoingBible Study meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 6:30 - 8:00pm, and is currently working through the Gospel of Luke. This study is open to all and is a question and discussion-based study! We are only about 5 chapters into the book, so this is a great time to join! If you’d like to join the group, or would need childcare for the summer, please feel free to email Pastor Brent at brent@nhunited.org.
