PEACEMAKER CONGRESS 2015
We Need YOU!
July 17-19
Detroit Delegation Day 1 Reflection:
The first day of the week long Detroit Delegation was marvelous; already the time here has been full, invigorating, and convicting.
We began by naming the streams of influence that we carry from our ancestry, to this place, and heard from Detroit elder and key activist Jim Perkinson. His poetry and grasp of the deep history of this place put the recent events of water shutoffs, emergency management, and displacement in context. Encouraged by Jim and the beauty blooming despite the desperation here in Detroit, we as a group are already engaging with questions of power, privilege, access, and deep justice for the earth and its people.
In the evening we attended a lively community meeting of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network. Since this group works at the intersections of racial justice, cooperative economics, growing food and inter-generational community capacity building the story about recent victories alongside the people of Las Pavas, Colombia in the face of attempted corporate take-over was especially moving. Both groups have demonstrated how collective action and food security are methods of means of resistance to displacement and cultural devastation.
Our delegation has been blessed to observe how the violence and oppression is being transformed through partnerships here in Detroit, and we are excited to share what we learned and introduce you to new friends when you're here for the Peacemaker Congress, July 17-19!]Sarah Thompson, Executive Director]
