Text to read: Mark 12:28 One of the Torah-teachers came up and heard them engaged in this discussion. Seeing that Yeshua answered them well, he asked him, “Which is the most important mitzvah of them all?” 29 Yeshua answered, “The most important is,
‘Sh’ma Yisra’el, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, O Isra’el, the Lord our God, the Lord is one], 30 and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding and with all your strength.’[Mark 12:30 Deuteronomy 6:4–5]
31 The second is this:
‘You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’[Mark 12:31 Leviticus 19:18]
There is no other mitzvah greater than these.” 32 The Torah-teacher said to him, “Well said, Rabbi; you speak the truth when you say that he is one, and that there is no other besides him; 33 and that loving him with all one’s heart, understanding and strength, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself, mean more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Yeshua saw that he responded sensibly, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And after that, no one dared put to him another sh’eilah.

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for: Mark 12:28-34
Verse 28
[28] And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
Which is the first commandment? — The principal, and most necessary to be observed. Matthew 22:34; Luke 10:25.
Verse 29
[29] And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
The Lord our God is one Lord — This is the foundation of the first commandment, yea, of all the commandments. The Lord our God, the Lord, the God of all men, is one God, essentially, though three persons. From this unity of God it follows, that we owe all our love to him alone. Deuteronomy 6:4.
Verse 30
[30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
With all thy strength — That is, the whole strength and capacity of thy understanding, will, and affections.
Verse 31
[31] And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
The second is like unto it — Of a like comprehensive nature: comprising our whole duty to man. There is no other moral, much less ceremonial commandment, greater than these. Leviticus 19:18.
Verse 33
[33] And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
To love him with all the heart — To love and serve him, with all the united powers of the soul in their utmost vigour; and to love his neighbour as himself - To maintain the same equitable and charitable temper and behaviour toward all men, as we, in like circumstances, would wish for from them toward ourselves, is a more necessary and important duty, than the offering the most noble and costly sacrifices.
Verse 34
[34] And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
Jesus said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God — Reader, art not thou? then go on: be a real Christian: else it had been better for thee to have been afar off.

Text to read: Mark 12:28-34
  • Read the ten commandments, Exodus 20:1-17[Exodus 20:1 Then God said all these words:א 2 “I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the abode of slavery.ב 3 “You are to have no other gods before me. 4 You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline. 5 You are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, Adonai your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot.ג 7 “You are not to use lightly the name of Adonai your God, because Adonai will not leave unpunished someone who uses his name lightly.ד 8 “Remember the day, Shabbat, to set it apart for God. 9 You have six days to labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Shabbat for Adonai your God. On it, you are not to do any kind of work — not you, your son or your daughter, not your male or female slave, not your livestock, and not the foreigner staying with you inside the gates to your property. 11 For in six days, Adonai made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. This is why Adonai blessed the day, Shabbat, and separated it for himself.ה 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.ו 13 “Do not murder.ז (14) “Do not commit adultery.ח (15) “Do not steal.ט (16) “Do not give false evidence against your neighbor.י 14 (17) “Do not covet your neighbor’s house; do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox, his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”(A: vii) 15 (18) All the people experienced the thunder, the lightning, the sound of the shofar, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled. Standing at a distance, 16 (19) they said to Moshe, “You, speak with us; and we will listen. But don’t let God speak with us, or we will die.” 17 (20) Moshe answered the people, “Don’t be afraid, because God has come only to test you and make you fear him, so that you won’t commit sins.”]

Sermon Story "What is Justice?" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 5 July 2015 with Scripture: Mark 12:28 One of the Torah-teachers came up and heard them engaged in this discussion.
In seeking justice and then reading the Ten Commandments, we are drawn to the Scripture passage where a religious scholar hers the wisdom of Jesus so he ask Jesus what is the greatest commandment. Jesus reply is simple as he quotes the famous Shema that we are to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, body, and spirit, but Jesus does not stop here. Jesus says the second commandment is like the first that we are to love the our neighbor as we love ourselves. First, we realize that when we Love God fully, we are able to love ourselves as God loves us unconditionally, not in an egotistical manner. Then with this love filling us from God we are able to love all other people, whether we agree with them or not, as we love ourselves in an unconditional manner as God loves us all because we love God with our whole being. Now, we look at the hate that is spread around the world individually and communally and we realize that somewhere we have loss this unconditional love. We see this in our disagreements over doctrine. We see this in our lack to respect people who have different sexual orientations. We see this in how we treat people whose skin color is different than ours or their culture is different than ours. We see this in how we treat people who are differently abled whether the disability is physical, mental, intellectual, or emotional. As we examine the ten commandments through the eyes of Jesus as He expresseed the greatest commandment and the second one as well, we examine ourselves to see how we truly love God fully in able to love ourselves and others with this Holy Unconditional Love. Lord, have mercy on us. We come in repentance of our sins as we come to receive God's Mercy and Grace in taking the Body of Jesus and eating it then taking His Blood and drinking it as we participate in the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We come to God's Table singing the Hymn "Family of God"
1. I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God,
I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I'm part of the family,
The Family of God.
2. You will notice we say "brother and sister" 'round here,
It's because we're a family and these are so near;
When one has a heartache, we all share the tears,
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.
3. I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God,
I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I'm part of the family,
The Family of God.
4. From the door of an orphanage to the house of the King,
No longer an outcast, a new song I sing;
From rags unto riches, from the weak to the strong,
I'm not worthy to be here, but praise God I belong!
5. I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God,
I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His Blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I'm part of the family,
The Family of God

and the Hymn "Where Peace Begins (One Family Under God)" by Lirik Rohani
1. Here we stand together
One in all humanity
For we all come from the Father
We are one family
It's our school of love and peace
Where we've learned there's a way
For the world to live in harmony
And together we all say
Chorus:
This is where peace begins
Here we sow the seeds of love
It all starts with our knowing
We are one family
We are one family under God
2. Not just body but spirit
On and on we try to be
People who live for others
For love knows no boundaries
Neither race nor religion
No barriers can keep us apart
Forgiveness, true understanding
This is how it all starts
Chorus:
This is where peace begins
Here we sow the seeds of love
It all starts with our knowing
We are one family
We are one family under God
