Dear Resurrection Family,
I’ve been back at work this week, beginning with a retreat with our executive staff on Monday and Tuesday, then back in the office the rest of the week. I’m looking forward to being back in the pulpit this weekend. I’ll continue our series of sermons on the parables of Jesus by looking at the parable of Dives (or the Rich Man) and Lazarus. It represents an entire category of parables in which Jesus reveals God’s character and what God asks of us. Please don’t miss worship this weekend. If you are out of town, join us online at www.rezonline.org.
This is a huge and fun-filled weekend at the church. The United Methodist Women’s Rummage Sale is going on today and tomorrow at the Leawood Campus from 8 am to 3 pm. There are mountains of amazing buys including two rooms of children’s items, furniture, household items, sporting goods, tools and more. LaVon and I bought a host of toys for Stella, books, a power washer and Marty Mather’s awesome bread. I also bought an item I thought might have been the oddest item in the sale – I’ll share it with you in the sermon this weekend. Proceeds benefit mission projects locally and around the world.
Tonight is Resurrection night at Kauffman Stadium with over 300 Resurrection members attending the game. A couple of our pastors and several of our staff members will join you. Enjoy the chance to cheer on the Royals as you get to know some of your fellow Resurrection members from our various campuses and worship services!
Tomorrow is our 14th annual Resurrection Car Show from 9 am to 1 pm. We have muscle cars, antiques, classics, street rods and some interesting modern cars registered – it’s going to be quite a show. Invite a friend to come and check out the 100+ amazing cars. Join us for food, fellowship and fun in the parking lot of our Leawood campus. Proceeds benefit the Hope Center for youth in Kansas City. Find out more or download an entry form to display your own car by clicking here.

This week I spent an hour with our Resurrection Summer Interns. What an amazing group! These 18 to 24 year olds are spending the summer serving in ministry here. The aim of this program you make possible is to mentor a new generation of Christian leaders. Another program you are sponsoring that you may not be aware of is the Young Preacher’s Festival happening next week. This event, co-sponsored by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, will host high school, college, seminary and young pastors to learn more about preaching and leadership. The importance of raising up a new generation of leaders cannot be overstated. Only 900 of our 15,000 pastors in the United Methodist Church in the US are under age 35. There will be a massive wave of retirements coming in the next ten years and not enough pastors to replace them.
While most of our community service takes place in Kansas City, we also have a large number of mission teams that serve across the country and around the world each year. This week we’ve had a family mission team serving in Omaha. Sunday we have a youth team leaving to serve in Jamaica and an adult team leaving for Honduras. We have two more teams heading to Honduras later this month. Thank you to all who are serving on a mission team this year! Are you interested in serving on a mission team to Jamaica, Haiti, Honduras, Malawi or South Africa? You can get more information in the narthex this weekend.
This weekend our Crossroads ministry at the Leawood campus (fellowship and spiritual growth for those 50+) is kicking off a study of the life and message of the Apostle Paul using my new book, The Call. The class will be held on Sunday mornings in the Wesley Chapel at 9 am. In the video component of the class I’ll take you to Turkey, Greece and Italy to walk in the footsteps of Paul.
Finally, on July 21st we have a special opportunity for you. At the Leawood campus we’ll be constructing a replica of the biblical Tabernacle or Tent of Meeting – the pre-cursor to Israel’s temple that was used for worship for hundreds of years before the Temple was built by Solomon. Elements of the tabernacle and the worship that took place there are seen by Christians as foreshadowing Christ. Kids are welcome. To find out more, click here.
That’s a bit of what’s happening around Resurrection this month. I hope to see you in worship this weekend as we explore one of the most important themes in Jesus’ parables!
