Which Quadrant Are You?
I was speaking with a banker last week. She told me that her company was looking at using coaching as a strategy to improve performance. They were working to put everyone into one of four categories: Not Able (to improve) and Not Willing (to be coached), Able but Not Willing, Not Able but Willing, Able and Willing. The place you want to be in this company is Able and Willing.
Into which category do you fall? Do you believe you are able to improve your performance (work, home, school, church, relationships, etc.)? If so then likely you are “Able”. Are you willing to be coached (open to responding to questions and partnering with a professional to work through the things which are holding you back)? If so then likely you are Willing.
Able and Willing is the best place to be when trying to improve your performance. It is important, however, to be honest with yourself about the category you are in. The nice thing is that regardless of our inherent abilities and current level of skill, Willing is always a choice we can make.
Are you Able and Willing or at least want to be?
But We Only Have a Few
Many churches only have a 1-8 youth. It can feel too small to be a “youth group” but the church feels like it should do “something” for them. Here are a few options to consider if your church is in this situation (or perhaps is on the other end of the spectrum and has a large group of youth).
Partner with two or more other churches with a similarly small number of youth. Create a youth group which combines all of the youth. Five churches each with five youth can create a group of 25, certainly large enough for more traditional youth group activities.
Partner with a church with a large youth group. Have your youth participate in the large group and offer one or two adult leaders to help. You may occasionally do an activity with just the youth from your church.
Encourage the youth in your church to participate in a para-church organization (Young Life, Youth for Christ, etc.) as well as attending worship at your church.
Forget about trying to have a traditional youth group. Instead set up mentoring relationships for your youth and find ways for them to serve which they find meaningful.
