"How to Keep a New Year's Resolution"
"Four Tips for Finishing What You Start"
Many of us made New Year's resolutions this weekend, and if you're like me you're already struggling to put willpower behind those resolves.
Some 45 percent of Americans make New Year's resolutions, but only about 8 percent are able to follow through on them. Twenty-five percent fail the first week! Less than half survive for six months.
Whether you're resolving to lose weight, save money, or develop a positive attitude, I want to help you become one of the 8 percent of achievers who lives out your resolution all year long.
Here are four secrets for finishing what you started on January 1.
1. Think Habit, Not Action
That may seem like a small distinction, but it's not. Any action you take is one more item done. You went to the gym on Saturday. Great. That counts for one action of which you need 364 more. Will you have time on Monday? What about next week?
A habit, however, is a pattern in your life. Habits are things we all do in predictable ways at predictable times. And every habit is triggered by an action. You get up, brush your teeth, come home from work and have dinner.
Build your resolve into a habit by keying it to a time of day, a place, and a "trigger" event. You get up, go to the gym, have breakfast and record your calories. Actions fade, habits last.
2. Tell On Yourself
Accountability is a huge motivator, and you can build it into your resolution. First, tell someone what you are planning to achieve, and be specific. "I want to lose 30 pounds. I'm going to read the whole Bible. I plan to walk 10,000 steps per day."
Tell on yourself or ask a friend or family member to check up on you. Report how you're doing every week. If nobody else knows your resolve, there's little risk in failing. Telling on yourself ups the ante on your discipline.
3. Enlist A Partner
An accountability partner is good, but a real life partner is even better. If you go to the library alone to study, nobody knows if you show up or not. If you're meeting a friend, you have an added incentive to stick with the program.
4. Reward Yourself
One year is a long time to wait for the payoff of your resolve. Find intermediate milestones and set a reward for each one. If you read the Bible 30 days in a row, treat yourself to dinner out. If you ride your bike every day for a week, you've earned an evening of watching your favorite programs.
Learn to celebrate your milestones, and you'll be more likely to keep on trucking.
How do you motivate yourself to make changes in your life? I'd love to hear your answer on Facebook or Twitter![Stan Toler]

LATEST UPDATE ON DAVID PHILLIPS AND HIS CANCER JOURNEY
LAURICE MAGGAY
Ohio: David and Naomi Phillips continue to send their heartfelt thanks for all of your prayers, as David continues along the journey of cancer treatment. It is indeed a blessed start to a new year as David gives us an update:
The Chemo is going well and I am finishing #10 of 12. Only 2 more to go! The doctor agreed to cut back on the oxyplantin by 20% last chemo (#9) and I noticed a big reduction in the side effects. I am still mostly concerned with the numbness in hands and feet and this time it did not increase like it had been up through #9. Also my energy level is much better, but still not quite normal. My bone marrow is still being killed off and recovering each time and it is a bit slower each time. But I still have enough of an immune system that I am able to take the Chemo and they have not restricted me to the house. I am still much less affected than many who take similar treatments. The Lord is answering prayers for healing and strength! We continue to build our relationships with our local church and this is a great encouragement to us.
Let us not get tired of being prayer warriors for David and Naomi. Your prayers and words of encouragement are truly appreciated.

Christian Business Forum: Living your Faith in the Workplace
Sealands Field
What does an international hotel management company, a leading global growth equity firm, and a company that designs, manufactures, and sells semiconductor assembly equipment all have in common?
A panel of business men and women from these and other international companies participating in a recent Christian Business Forum in a city in Asia. The leadership event was organized by Nazarene team members and local Christian business leaders who are passionate about living out their faith in a fast-paced and highly-competitive business environment. The young people who attended, most of whom are recent university graduates, had the opportunity to ask very practical questions about faith issues in the workplace.
The forum was indeed encouraging to those who would like to excel in the workplace and at the same time uphold their values and Biblical standards.

We bring glory to God when we do our work with diligence and excellence, keeping in mind that our ultimate boss is God.
A key question raised was, “What is the best way to be a witness for Christ in my job?” The response? We bring glory to God when we do our work with diligence and excellence, keeping in mind that our ultimate boss is God. He is the One to whom we must answer.
“What’s the Christian way to be a pilot? Land the plane!”- Tim Keller and Katherine Leary Alsdorf
In their book Every Good Endeavor, Tim Keller and Katherine Leary Alsdorf posed the question this way: “What’s the Christian way to be a pilot?” Their answer? “Land the plane!”
Participants expressed that young people in Asia have a great fear of failure and this creates tremendous pressure. In this environment, how does one deal with personal failure in the workplace? Several of the leaders shared from personal experience of how God used their failures to bring them to the point where they were completely and totally dependent on Him.
The panelists encouraged the participants to not fear failure. Failure in the workplace is common. But we should be “failing forward,” learning from our mistakes and becoming more dependent on God.
Another question that created much discussion was, “How does one hold to Biblical standards when it seems that compromise is the only way to succeed?” Real life examples were given by the panelists of how, when they held true to God’s Word, He was glorified and their work prospered.
The leadership event was a unique opportunity for young people just starting their careers to interact with respected Christian business men and women One participant commented: “I realize now that we each have unique opportunities to serve God. My work puts me in contact with people who might not otherwise come to know what it means to be a follower of Christ.”[Submitted Team Member / Participant.]

KOREAN NAZARENE STUDENTS SPREAD GOD’S LOVE IN PHILIPPINE PROVINCE
LAURICE MAGGAY
Iloilo, Philippines: Near the end of December, during the season of giving, an eager group of nearly fifty Korean Nazarene University (KNU) students and church members gathered in Iloilo city to spread the love of Christ.
For two days they ministered to the people of the province of Dumangas, playing games with the children, offering health counseling, and giving away sixteen wheelchairs and dozens of pairs of shoes to those in need.
With balloons in hand, the students of KNU were sent off to personally invite the local residents to the services. After walking from home to home in Dumangas, the Korean team engaged the people in an exciting worship service that featured beautiful dance performances by the Korean ladies of the church. After worship, the local pastors gave a sermon and the Korean team gathered around the people to pray with them.
Not only was it a tremendous opportunity of cross-cultural ministry for the team from Korea, but it was also a wonderful time of blessing for the Nazarene church and local residents in Iloilo.[Submitted by: Rebecca Moisio]

Reflecting Christ: Discernment
Howard Culbertson (Engage Magazine)
When I was about 8 or 9 years old, someone gave me an autograph book. I went around badgering people to sign it. Some just signed their name on those small multi-colored pages. Others wrote personal notes. A few wrote a scripture verse before signing their names.
During one of our family's annual visits to relatives in Missouri, I asked an elderly great-aunt for her autograph. Before signing her name, she wrote, "All is not gold that glitters."
That classic saying didn't mean much to me then. I certainly had no idea it was from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Now, with the passage of time, I've come to see how the words "all that glitters is not gold" shout the need for discernment.
Follow the link to find out how discernment was evident in Jesus' life, and how we too, could use discernment in our lives to be better Christians.

Discernment was very evident in Jesus’ earthly life. That gift of discernment, that ability to see things as they really are, is something very helpful, perhaps even necessary in cross-cultural missionary ministry.
Jesus, of course, knew very well that all that glitters is not gold. So, even though He acted in kind and loving ways, no one could fool Him. No one could “pull the wool” over Jesus’ discerning eyes.
Being discerning does not mean Jesus was suspicious by nature. However, He could see through the fog that often obscures motives, attitudes, capabilities and even depth of commitment. Jesus understood that personal sin hinders people from being what they were created to be. Thus, people who encountered Jesus were sometimes startled when He brought up issues in their life.
Of course, Jesus not only saw things in all their ugliness. He also discerned what could be. So, while Jesus knew that all that glitters is not gold, He saw possibilities in people.
Global missionaries need an abundance of discernment. In cross-cultural living, discerning what is really going on and reading between the lines is not easy. For obvious reasons, no missionary will ever reach the level of discernment which Jesus possessed. Still, people in cross-cultural evangelism must pray for and use discernment as they seek to:
Today, as you pray for missionaries, ask God to give them a huge helping of the kind of discernment that Jesus possessed.---------------------

The Stirring: An Alternative to Sunday Morning
Jeremiah Wood (Engage Magazine)

I sat around the table with a group of friends having breakfast at 11 p.m. in a 24-hour restaurant in Junction City, Kansas, USA. We started a conversation with the waitress and asked if she attended church anywhere in the area. She said that her work schedule had her working every Sunday morning and as much as she would like to go to church, she just couldn't make it.
That very small and seemingly insignificant conversation was the beginning of not just an idea, but a conviction for our church to be more to the community than just a Sunday morning service.
The idea of a Saturday night church began to take root...

- Foster sustainability rather than dependency;
- Facilitate church-planting movements as opposed to starting isolated congregations.

The Stirring: An alternative to Sunday morning by Jeremiah WoodI sat around the table with a group of friends having breakfast at 11 p.m. in a 24-hour restaurant in Junction City, Kansas, USA. We started a conversation with the waitress and asked if she attended church anywhere in the area. She said that her work schedule had her working every Sunday morning and as much as she would like to go to church, she just couldn’t make it.
That very small and seemingly insignificant conversation was the beginning of not just an idea, but a conviction for our church to be more to the community than just a Sunday morning service.
The idea of a Saturday night church began to take root. We began to ask people all over the community what they thought about coming to a church service on a Saturday night and their responses were overwhelming. Several people we talked to had the same response as our waitress that night at the restaurant, they would come to church if they could, but their work schedule simply prevented it. Surprisingly to us, there was a much larger group of people that said they wanted to know more about God, but at some point had a very bad experience at a church on a Sunday morning and had vowed never to go back.
So what we had in front of us was a group of people who couldn’t go to church or wouldn’t go to church on any given Sunday morning. With that understanding, we felt the confirmation of the Lord to begin a new Saturday night church called "The Stirring."
The Stirring was envisioned to be the alternative to the normal Sunday morning church service. There are no nice clothes, no formalities and no preconceived expectations. The Stirring is simply a place for anyone to come and freely engage in an atmosphere of uninhibited worship to our God and King as well as learn more about His character and nature through the simple and practical teachings of God’s Word.

As we prepared for the launch date, word began to spread throughout the city. One morning I went to a local fast food restaurant to pick up some breakfast burritos for a leadership meeting. The lady who brought my food out to me asked what all these burritos were for and I explained the planning meeting we had for The Stirring. Her face lit up with excitement. She said several people had told her about the upcoming service and that she and her whole family would start attending. She proceeded to tell me how grateful she was that a church in town was so willing to reach out to people like her and offer a place to come and learn about God when she either couldn’t or wouldn’t come to a Sunday morning service.
The Stirring launched in November 2015 with more than 120 people in attendance and has continued to grow both numerically and in popularity throughout the community. We have since spoken often of Paul’s word to the Corinthians when he said, “I become all things to all people so that I might win some…” All this happened when we decided to stop offering Jesus to the community on our terms (Sunday morning only) and started sharing Jesus on the terms and availability of the community.[Jeremiah Wood is associate pastor with emphasis on church planting at Junction City Church of the Nazarene, Kansas, USA]Schedule of Asia-Pacific Region District Assemblies
