Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Christek with The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, United States for Friday, 12 August 2016
Greetings RezDowntowners!
I hope you are well this Friday. It has been a great week that began with collecting and delivering all of the school supplies to the students of Crispus Attucks Elementary School. I am amazed by your generosity. This year we more than doubled the amount of school supplies needed due to the increasing number of students at Attucks Elementary and you came through. You are amazing! Thank you for making the start of the school year remarkable for the students at Attucks. This week also was a great week for strategic planning within the staff team on Tuesday and Wednesday, we ventured out to the lake of the Ozarks for 24 hours to plan and dream about the next 18 months. It was good to get to a place where we could clear our minds and calendars for a second just to think about where God is leading us into the future. If you have ideas or thoughts about strategic direction, things you think God might be calling our congregation to do in the next 18 months, please feel free to email me at scott.chrostek@cor.org. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
This weekend we are kicking off our new sermon series on Moses. This weekend is also our fall kick-off for children and youth in Sunday School - a fun and exciting weekend. Our kids will move up a grade and meet their new Sunday School teachers. We’ll have special activities in Sunday School, and we’ll also be spending time in prayer this weekend for all of our children, teachers and administrators at each campus. We have a special gift at the end of worship for parents, grandparents and teachers - a “prayer for our children” meant to be placed on your refrigerator to help you pray for the children entrusted to your care.
I’m really excited about this sermon series and I’m also excited about the return to a regular rhythm as our kids return to school. As a way of returning to worship, I’d love for you to invite others to join us this weekend…Here’s a link to our upcoming series https://vimeo.com/177806371 and I’d love for you to share it on social media as well!
Lastly, this weekend Wendy and I will be celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary. As we reflect over our lives, our family and our friends together here in KC...we cannot imagine life without the support of so many people we consider to be family here in KC. We are so blessed to be able to celebrate another year in marriage, but a part of that celebration includes all of the care and love we have received from you! Thank you so much and I love you Wendy...my life wouldn't be what it is without you!

2nd Annual Women’s Retreat - Saturday, August 27! REGISTRATION IS OPEN! Join other women from9 am – 2 pm at 1522 McGee for some “Trash Talk,” as we learn simple yet powerful tools to embrace compassion for ourselves and truly activate Jesus' teaching of "love thy neighbor." Don't miss this opportunity to transform your life and impact our world. Pastor Anne and Diane Breneman will be leading this class. An attorney for over 25 years, Diane devoted her law career to supporting those who suffered catastrophic burn injuries. Through her law practice, Diane worked with talented neuroscientists, neurologists and psychiatrists across the country to support her injured clients. It was through these experts that she first learned of science’s advancements regarding how to rewire the brain to optimize the experience of life through contemplative practice. She will lead us to use our faith and our minds to help us lead a God-filled life where we rid ourselves of the trash we talk each day! For questions, contact Kelly.sisney@cor.org. Half Truths Study – Join others starting Tuesday, August 30 at 7pm at 1522 McGee for a 7-week video-study based on Pastor Adam's book about the simple phrases we hear so much. They sound Christian – like something you might find in the Bible. We’ve all heard these words. Maybe we’ve said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join others as we look at phrases like “hate the sinner, love the sin” or “God helps those who help themselves.” The book, Half Truths, will be available for purchase ($10) at the first class, scholarships available. For more information. For more information and to register, contact Bob Edwards at bob@kcbob.com or visit cor.org/downtown/HalfTruthsStudy.
What’s The Purpose? Finding Fulfillment at Work. On Wednesday, August 31 at 7pm, share the evening with Pastor Anne and licensed psychologist Charlotte McCloskey. Work through and discuss why sometimes the daily grind of working for a paycheck feels unfulfilling and exhausting and yet the God who created each of us with our unique passions and gifts calls us to work that is life-giving. Be a part of this conversation about how finding purpose at work intersects with our faith. For questions contactAnne.Williams@cor.org. Class size is limited, to register go to cor.org/downtown/FulfillmentAtWork.
