gotandem "Labor Day: Day 5-The Difference Between Work and a Job" for Monday, 5 September 2016
Most of us have jobs. We punch in, get our work done, we go home. Sure, we do work at our jobs, but at the end of the day, a lot of our jobs are unsatisfying. We don't enjoy the work. We do it because it's necessary to our everyday living. And that's ok. It's part of the "by the sweat of your brow" curse from Genesis 3:19. But as a believer, our jobs shouldn't be the only work we're doing.
In fact, in 2 Timothy 2:15 it says "Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth."
Our true work is the gospel. Whether it's preaching it or living it, that is our ultimate calling. So yes, we need to be faithful during our jobs. We need to work hard. But we do that so that we are able to minister to others. That's the work we are all truly called to.
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”[Matthew 28:19-20]
