The Upper Room Daily Devotionals in Nashville, Tennessee, United States "GENERATION TO GENERATION" for Tuesday, 6 September 2016 with Scripture: Hebrews 13:1-3, 15-16

The Upper Room Daily Devotionals in Nashville, Tennessee, United States "GENERATION TO GENERATION" for Tuesday, 6 September 2016 with Scripture: Hebrews 13:1  Let brotherly friendship continue; 2 but don’t forget to be friendly to outsiders; for in so doing, some people, without knowing it, have entertained angels. 3 Remember those in prison and being mistreated, as if you were in prison with them and undergoing their torture yourselves.
15 Through him, therefore, let us offer God a sacrifice of praise continually.[Hebrews 13:15 Leviticus 7:12; 22:29; Psalms 50:14, 23; 107:22; 116:17; 2 Chronicles 29:31] For this is the natural product of lips that acknowledge his name.
16 But don’t forget doing good and sharing with others, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

[Paul said,] “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”[Acts 20:35 (NIV)]
As a little girl I enjoyed watching my mother prepare hearty stews, and bake golden loaves of bread and rich, velvety cakes and pastries. Close to supper time she would pack portions of this food into a basket to take to a neighbor in need.
One day on our way home, I asked Mom why we had to give these goodies away. She replied, “Always remember that it makes God happy when we share, and that it is more blessed to give than to receive.” These words became indelibly etched in my mind and on my heart.
Recently I enjoyed a visit with my eight-year-old granddaughter, Kaitlyn. We sat on the patio, which was covered with acorns from the oak tree above. She told me her class was planning a mission project to help those in need and that they had to earn money to donate to the project. I offered her a job cleaning acorns off the patio. As she worked, she told me that her goal in life was to become successful in business and give half of her earnings to those in need. I said, “It makes God happy when we share, and it is more blessed to give than to receive.” She looked up and softly said, “I know.”
The words my mother spoke to me will continue to be shared for generations to come.
