From Pastor Molly: GenerosityAfter Hurricane Matthew passed through Haiti recently, I was talking with my son Jonah; when I explained a bit about why it would be hard for people to rebuild quickly, without pausing he said, "then we should send them some money to help."
I believe there is something deeply human about our desire to help one another, and to express our belief that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. In the earnest, simple logic of a 5-year-old, I was reminded of this.
Generosity is one of the ways Christians express their love of God. There are a lot of reasons and ways that we give--to the church, to loved ones, for causes we believe in--but all of them give us a way to show that we value something beyond ourselves. In the church, we are invited to give to God first--not with what's leftover at the end, but as a way of starting out. By giving to God first, we are reminded that all that we have is a gift from God. By giving to God first, we get to let our lives and all that we do with our money be a reflection of God's generosity to us.
More often, I see financial decisions becoming sources of tension, stress and strain in our family lives. I pray that you might take a step back, breathe deeply, and find ways to treasure the amazing gifts you've been given.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly Vetter
I hope you will come to our free Better Together Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, from 5-6:30pm. Besides good food and good company, we have some fun ways to start conversations and build deeper relationships with all the diverse members of our church family. There's a place for you at the table!

Genesis 41:14-24
Scripture Text: Genesis 41:14 Then Pharaoh summoned Yosef, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothes, and came in to Pharaoh.
(A: ii) 15 Pharaoh said to Yosef, “I had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it; but I’ve heard it said about you that when you hear a dream, you can interpret it.” 16 Yosef answered Pharaoh, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer that will set his mind at peace.” (S: ii) 17 Pharaoh said to Yosef, “In my dream, I stood at the edge of the river; 18 and there came up out of the river seven cows, fat and sleek; and they began feeding in the swamp grass. 19 After them, there came up out of the river seven more cows, poor, miserable-looking and lean — I’ve never seen such bad-looking cows in all the land of Egypt! 20 Then the lean and miserable-looking cows ate up the first seven fat cows. 21 But after they had eaten them up, one couldn’t tell that they had eaten them; because they were as miserable-looking as before. At this point I woke up. 22 But I dreamed again and saw seven full, ripe ears of grain growing out of a single stalk. 23 After them, seven ears, thin and blasted by the east wind, sprang up. 24 And the thin ears swallowed up the seven ripe ears. I told this to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to me.”
"Unlikely Partnerships"John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Genesis 41:14-24
Verse 16
[16] And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.
(1.) He gives honour to God; It is not in me; God must give it. Great gifts then appear most graceful and illustrious, when those that have them use them humbly, and take not the praise of them to themselves, but give it to God, (2.) He shews respect to Pharaoh, and hearty good-will to him, supposing that the interpretation would be an answer of peace. Those that consult God's oracles may expect an answer of peace.

Reading the printed invitation, I walked down stairs to the young people's room now being headed up by Staff Member Youth Ministry Director Stephen Hale who greeted me there and showed me all the improvements and explained the planned work to make it even better. If you haven't been there take time to talk to Stephen and ask for a tour. It includes rooms and rest rooms under the May Day Parlor and the choir rehearsal room. You'll see fresh wall painting, lounge furniture and other features designed to make it comfortable and a place for our young people to hang out, study or meditate. You may even be persuaded to help in its planned completion.
Speaking of our choir, I notice that while our music Director Jim Raycroft is conducting our choir of about fifteen, he exudes enthusiasm and one would swear he is conducting a one hundred voice chorus. Such effort has allowed our musicians to improve each month and they have inspired us with the beauty of music many times these past two years. If you have any interest in joining them, talk to Jim. His talented wife, Eileen is substituting as organist for two weeks as our regular organist, Mary Ann Stickler vacations in Spain until October 30th.
Now, if you will excuse me, a personal privilege: Many of you know that I play French Horn in the Beach Cities Symphony and currently hold the position of the Association President. Therefore I invite you, your families, neighbors and friends to our first of four concerts as we begin our 67th season, Friday November 4th, 2016 at the El Camino College Marsee Auditorium at 8:15 PM. This eighty piece orchestra is made up of local community musicians as well as a few professionals who help support us. Conducted these past 20 some years by Barry Brisk, he is presenting music by Haydn, Brahms and Rachmaninoff. Please see the announcement of the musical works and soloist on the church bulletin board. The concert is free, but on campus parking is $3.00. Also, this concert is dedicated to the Memory of our long time church member Mary Emerson, who loved classical music and attended with friends for many years. She left a generous bequest to the orchestra, so we honor her for this donation

This Fall: Better Together
It's a church theme, a sermon series and more! All fall, we will be celebrating how we're Better Together, remembering how God works in the lives of communities and in our relationships. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
It goes much deeper, too--we come to know about God because of the people in whom we have seen God at work. Our faith and love make sense when we live them out with other people here on earth.

Young Todd Potter spoke to the congregation last Sunday about his life in our church, participating in trips, musicals, youth activities and he is also on the money counting team headed by Paul Caldwell. He is also a grandson of Nancy and David Klinger and has been a frequent greeter and usher at church services. His talk was enthusiastically received as he featured this fall's theme, "Better Together ". With his family's support, he is certainly one to watch.

Thursday, October 20, 2016 - Music Notes by Jim Raycroft
Last week and this week, our beloved accompanist, MaryAnn, has been on a trip to Spain with her husband. So, last Sunday and this Sunday her place on the organ bench has been filled by my wife, Eileen Raycroft. For those of you who haven't met her, Eileen did her doctorate in pipe organ at USC and spent a year studying organ on a German government scholarship in Freiburg, Germany. She doesn't have the time to play regularly in a church anymore (having been music director at a church in the Valley for 17 years), but is happy to fill in for MaryAnn from time to time. She played the "Famous Postlude" back in June during our series Famous Postludes, playing the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (probably the most famous organ piece in the history of the universe, thanks to Hollywood). This week, she and Cris (our band keyboardist and pianist extraordinaire) are playing a piano/organ duet for the postlude, an arrangement of the familiar praise song Majesty, arranged by Fred Bock (who was director of music at Hollywood Presbyterian Church and a composer/arranger/publisher before his passing about 15 years ago).
Jester Hairston was also a local treasure. One of the most recognizable names in the world of spirituals, Jester was born the grandson of slaves, who worked the Hairston Plantation in Belews Creek, North Carolina. His parents moved to Homestead, PA (outside Pittsburgh), where he graduated high school. He then studied at, as one of the first black individuals admitted, and graduated from Tufts College outside Boston in 1929. He sang with the Hall Johnson Choir in Harlem for a while, but was almost fired because of his Boston accent (Johnson told him "we're singing ain't and cain't, and you're singing shahn't and cahn't – they don't mix!"). His work on Broadway with that choir took him to Hollywood, where he began working regularly on movies, television and radio. He began writing and arranging, especially spirituals, with Mary's Little Boy Child composed in 1956. Most of us have seen the movie Lilies of the Field (1963), starring Sidney Poitier. Those wonderful scenes where Sidney is singing "Amen, amen, amen", which he teaches to the nuns – that song was composed and arranged by Jester for the movie, and Sidney's singing isn't Sidney – it's Jester. Jester lived out his life in Los Angeles, traveling all over the world teaching and conducting and spreading the word of spirituals. He also worked as an actor in front of the camera, in such movies as The Alamo, To Kill A Mockingbird and In The Heat Of The Night, to name a few. Many of the singers in town were his protĆ©gĆ©s, and "Jester stories" abound at local music events. We lost Jester on January 18, 2000, at the age of 98, and most of the musical world in Los Angeles attended the funeral service. Our anthem this week, Hold On!, is one of his classics.
The song Cornerstone, released by the band Hillsong United in 2011, is being sung this week by Angie Tait, who is one of our youth program and a terrific singer.
