Excuses might be found for a thief
who steals because he is starving.
But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole,
even if he has to sell everything in his house.
But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool,
for he destroys himself.
He will be wounded and disgraced.
His shame will never be erased.
For the woman’s jealous husband will be furious,
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
He will accept no compensation,
nor be satisfied with a payoff of any size. [Proverbs 6:30-35]
Why is the comparison between a thief and an adulterer made here?
Why do you think the consequences for adultery are so harsh?

And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).
But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:14-15).
Reflect I know the reason that I feel loved and secure is because my parents were intentional about loving and teaching me, even when I was young. My dad has told me that he really didn’t enjoy us in the baby stage. It felt like we were whining, crying little blobs of work. And we were. But he said he forced himself to love us by spending time serving us.
My dad took the same approach to our spiritual lives. He was careful to make time every night before bed to read the Bible to us and then he would talk to us about what it meant. I need to be more like my dad. Because if I don’t start following through teaching my children about God and showing them his love…no one will.
Respond Take this week to see how intentional you are with passing your faith on.
