The Church of the Nazarene (CotN) did not "start" a Global Outreach Program. From the first days when the holiness movements united to form what is now the CotN there was already a successful global outreach program functioning as three of the groups that merged each had overseas missionary work in progress.
Missions has been at the heart of the CotN all along and continues to be at the forefront of what we in the CotN are called to do....Make Christlike Disciples in the Nations.
The four objectives of NMI are areas that we have identified as ways to focus on missions and outreach. The Mission Priority One emphasis is a way to help our local churches be intentional about focusing on missions, praying for all aspects of mission outreach, educating our congregations about the mission work the church is engaged in, and also giving to WEF, which supports the structure of Missions. This helps our congregation connect with the essence of our denomination.

Developing Leaders by Stan Toler
Harnessing Your Super Power
Your Untapped Ability to Change Your Life
I've decided to be positively positive!
Possibly the worst result of a negative attitude is that it brings a feeling of helplessness. Negative thinking, takes form in thoughts like I'm not smart enough, or I could never do that, or Why does the other guy always seem to get the breaks? That talk basically says, I can't.
That feeling of helplessness takes shape in our words to others as well. We complain, gossip, or resort to sarcasm because we feel helpless to change our circumstances. Of course, griping only makes us feel even more helpless to bring about change. We become our own prophets of doom.
Finally, this feeling of helplessness shows up in our actions. We procrastinate, we hoard information, ignore good opportunities, bury ourselves in meaningless work, and neglect our health. Why? Because we are convinced that nothing will change. We just don't think we can break free from the rut we've worked ourselves into, so it's easier to just keep doing the same old things than to risk trying something new.
But here's the thing: You have a power you are not aware of!
God gave you the freedom of choice; you are able to put your thoughts into action, and to influence your own attitude. You have the power to change your thought life! Though we have this power, many of us never realize it-or never act on it. As a result, we don't live up to our potential.
Have you ever watched a video of baby eagles in the nest? At first glance, it looks like they were born to sit and squawk until the parent eagle makes a food delivery. But that isn't the eagle's DNA. God gave it wings. It is born to fly, to soar to heights we could never imagine, to find its own resources and grow.
To make a positive change in your life you need to realize that you can fly. You can soar above your negative circumstances and your own negative attitude. You have the power to change.
To do so, you must believe that you have the ability to make choices. Do you think you can? You're right. Do you think you can't? You're right about that too. You can choose a better life than the one you have right now.
If you could make any change in your life, what would it be? And here's a far more powerful question: When are you going to do it?[Stan Toler]
Please continue to pray for Stan's battle with cancer - for more information click here.

Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej Passes
Bangkok, Thailand: Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, died on Thursday, October 13th, at the age of 88. King Adulyadej had been on the throne for 70 years.
“Indeed Thailand is in deep mourning,” shares team member, Sam Yangmi. “Everyone the TV is interviewing whether young or old is expressing bewilderment of not knowing how life can go on when 7 generations have lost the only Father figure they have ever known!”

According to Channel News Asia:
“Starting on Friday, flags will be flown at half mast at all government buildings and schools for 30 days, and Thai government officials will mourn the king for a year.
Thais have also been urged to refrain from festivities for the next 30 days and to wear black for a year.”
The sadness and grief felt by the Thai people is palpable as images of weeping and mourning circulate the internet.
Please pray for:

  1. The members of the royal family that are going through this time of sorrow.
  2. The Christian community in Thailand to be a comfort to all of our Thai neighbors and a beacon of hope to them.
  3. The government as they bring about a smoothe succession.
  4. Finally, the stability and tranquility in Thailand during this year of mourning the loss of Thailand’s beloved King. King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Prayers for NHM Secretary and his battle against the Big C
Papua New Guinea: Baru Dirye is the National Health Secretary for Nazarene Health Ministries (NHM). He is not only a top administrator in the health care ministry, but he and his wife Christina, have led a hugely successful Nazarene church plant. What initially started as a simple house church a few years ago eventually led to the single biggest baptism in the church’s history in PNG- with 75 people baptized in one service!

Some months ago, Baru developed a limp. Later they found out that a bone cyst was causing the problem. The cyst was so large that it required a hip replacement, with the assistance of Dr. Jim Radcliffe and another missionary surgeon from another hospital. Sadly, the pathology came back and revealed that this growth was only a symptom of a bigger problem –cancer. Baru has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow.
Baru was started on some treatment but the cancer has not responded so far. The best treatment is not available in Papua New Guinea and would be very expensive in a more developed country. NHM is trying to source other medicines as well. We trust God can do miracles in whatever way possible.
We ask for prayers from our brothers and sisters around the world – for God to touch and heal Baru physically, to give he and his wife and children peace and strength, to guide doctors and treatment, provide what is needed not only for his treatment but also for the running of the health care ministry.[Submitted by: Dr. Scott Dooley]

Thailand
This has become a very challenging week for the people of Thailand.
On October 13th, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, passed away at the age of 88. He had served as King of Thailand for 70 years.
His passing has left a tremendous impact on this Southeast Asia Nation.
"Indeed Thailand is in deep mourning," shares team member, Sam Yangmi. "Everyone the TV is interviewing whether young or old is expressing bewilderment of not knowing how life can go on when 7 generations have lost the only Father figure they have ever known!"
This is no small event for Southeast Asia. Please commit to pray. Follow the link below for specific prayer requests as submitted by Southeast Asia Team Members.

Tahan, Myanmar
Many think of Extension Courses as just being a means of taking theological education to those who are unable to come to the Bible college.
In this encouraging story from Southeast Asia Nazarene Bible College - we see how God is using the Extension Courses as a means of grace to reach people who are yet unreached.
Lives are coming into the Kingdom, in addition to being prepared for service in the Kingdom.

Extension Courses – More Than Just Training – A Means of Grace!
SEANBC Extension class participants.
Southeast Asia Field: The third week of September was truly a week where God’s abundant grace was demonstrated through the impact of the Southeast Asia Nazarene Bible College (SEANBC) extension classes, one of which was held in Tahan near Kalaymyo, Eastern Myanmar.

Quite amazingly, one new believer was baptized through the teaching of the class and seven new believers attended the class in preparation for ministering both near and far!
Upon completion of the course, we celebrated the Lord’s supper where new believers accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

Celebrating the Lord’s supper together.
The SEANBC extension courses are an effective tool of missions, through which we are not only preparing those men and women who will be future pastors, teachers and leaders, but through which the Lord is reaching out to the unreached!
We praise God for His love and grace through the extension courses.

Board of General Superintendents
By definition, leaders are people who get things done...make things happen!
Every leader is faced with four options - in every situation.
Do you know what those four options are? Which option do you naturally default to?
General Superintendent J.K. Warrick expands on these four options. He concludes with a statement by David Staal, senior editor for Building Church Leaders.
Anyone can do nothing:
a leader, though, should always seek to do the right thing.
Or at least something. Maybe anything.
After all, leaders make things happen.

Making Things Happen! What’s That Mean? by J.K. Warrick

David Staal is the senior editor for Building Church Leaders and serves as president of Kids Hope USA. He has served on staff at Willow Creek and is a senior editor of Christianity Today.
He suggests that there are always four options available to every leader in every situation.
Staal describes leaders as persons who make things happen. But, what do we mean by things?
Here are the four options:
  1. The right thing. In every situation there are multiple choices, but there is nearly always a right thing. The best option is one that is the “well-thought, well-planned, or the most-likely-to-succeed” option. Leaders must understand the present challenge, and they must then see a path to the preferred future. That is the right thing.
  2. Something. Isaac Newton’s law of motion says that “an object at rest tends to stay at rest … unless acted upon.” When an organization lacks momentum or evident progress, it is in need of some new action or perhaps a fresh start. Staal calls this the first step, which must be followed by a second step and so on. Sometimes a leader just has to say, “Let’s get started!” While most Western thought tends to suggest that new ways of behaving begin with new ways of thinking, our Lord seemed to understand that new ways of behaving develop new ways of thinking. Could it be that people need more examples and fewer lectures?
  3. Anything. While I am not sure that I always agree that “wildfire is better than no fire at all,” there is at least some truth in the adage. Something … anything. At least consider new ideas, regardless of the source.
  4. Nothing. Nothing? Yes, nothing. Sometimes it is best to weather the storm and delay a decision until conditions are more conducive. This, however, is not a good first choice because one can easily miss the open door of opportunity. If rooted in denial or fear, nothing is a very bad choice!
Staal concludes with this:
Anyone can do nothing:
a leader, though, should always seek to do the right thing.
Or at least something. Maybe anything.
After all, leaders make things happen.
Let’s be Spirit-filled, Spirit-directed leaders!

Stress 102 (part 2) stres/noun: the physiological response to a perceived threat or demand.
In our last article, we tackled what stress is and why it matters.
Read: Breathing Deep- Stress 101 (Part 1)
This time, let's answer this very important question: What can we do about it?
Once we become aware of what stress is, what it could do to our minds and bodies, and the benefits and risks of addressing and ignoring it, then we are in a good place to be motivated toward action.
But what is that action? Harmon and I have developed a 5-Step Process that has helped us as well as others we've worked with, to take charge as it relates to Stress Management. (Thanks to Stephen Gualberto for putting these into 5 R's!)
Our awareness of stress and how to manage it is a huge issue impacting our holistic health, the effectiveness of our lives in ministry and the quality of our most valued relationships.[Submitted by: Cindy Schmelzenbach]
