Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday October 21, 2016 at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown  in Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Greetings RezDowntowners,
I hope this message finds you doing well. I am spending the morning writing and drinking coffee. As I type, I must confess that I have been reflecting over the time Wendy and I’ve spent in Kansas City and how our lives are so different now then when we first moved here. It’s amazing. This morning alone I’ve thought about the people who have become like family to us. I’ve thought about the church that has grown by the grace of God into this living and breathing reflection of God’s image not only in our own lives, but for so many others throughout the metro as well. I’ve thought about what happens when God moves through the heart of a community to inspire sacrificial generosity and service. I’ve thought about the miraculous byproducts, some of the things we’ve witnessed and participated in. I’ve thought about bars becoming churches, death being transformed into life, baptisms and babies, people shining with the light of recovery and the privilege of building the first new church building in downtown Kansas City in over 80 years. It has been so awesome.
I’m excited about this weekend in worship. This week is Commitment Weekend and I’ll be preaching live about the mission of the church and how the church impacts our lives and the lives of those living throughout the community at large. I’ll be sharing my version of the good life, but more importantly you’re not going to want to miss this weekend, as I’ll also be sharing my favorite football story (it comes with Kansas ties). I hope you’ll join me.
In anticipation of this powerful weekend in the life of our church, I’m hoping that each and everyone of you will join us in worship as well as join Wendy and me in filling out a commitment card for the upcoming year as a way of drawing nearer to God and reflecting God’s generosity to the world around you. At each worship service we’re inviting people to place their commitments on the altar at the close of worship. It is important that you take this step up in commitment to and covenant with God through the church not simply because it is a life-giving spiritual discipline, but it also makes possible the mission and ministry of our church to transform the heart of the city. If you are unable to attend this weekend, please consider filling out your commitment card online by clicking here (be sure to select 'Resurrection Downtown'). For everyone who makes a commitment we’ll be sure to have a special gift for you after worship (our 2017 coffee mug)!
I can’t wait to see you this weekend and in the meantime, below you ‘ll find a variety of ways to connect to the mission of this church:
Community Group: A Scandalous Story: Interpreting the Bible – Join us on Wednesdays, beginningOctober 26 at 7pm at 1508 Grand for this 4-week class as we study the most scandalous story ever written…the Bible! How do we make sense of it, when was it written, who wrote it, what does it say about God and how are we to read it? What do we do with violence and sexism found in the Bible? This best-selling book can also be the best at confusing, confounding and questioning what you believe. Be brave and dive in with others as you take a look at this amazing and seemingly, scandalous story! For more information, contact Matt.Bisel@cor.org or Shannon.Endicott@cor.org. The class size is limited. For more information and to register please visit cor.org/downtown/classes.
