Pastor Penny Ellwood's eNote for Friday, 11 November 2016 from the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs of Blue Springs, Missouri, United States

Resurrection Blue Springs,
This has been quite the week with the country still reverberating from the election results of Tuesday. Amidst all the conflicting responses I have heard, read and seen, the image that I have held on to this week was the response of our congregation on election day. As some of our members saw the lines wrapping around the church building with people waiting to vote, you quickly organized to provide hospitality to those standing in the line. You served coffee, and baked goodies to democrats, republicans, greens or independents alike. When someone got impatient you greeted them with a smile and a cookie easing the tension. It was a beautiful thing to see. You saw the people first, not their affiliation, and you cared for their needs.
Despite our personal position on the outcome of this election, I believe we move forward in the same way you responded on Tuesday. We pay attention and step in to care for the needs of all God's people. We place our trust in the checks and balances set in place to distribute power that have protected our democracy for over two centuries. Most of all, we remember that our hope has never been in politicians and political parties, but in Jesus Christ and the kingdom he proclaimed. Let us not let the outcome of this election divide us but have the courage to meet, befriend and love the other and trust that God is at work. He has a surprising way of working in and through people in ways we could never imagine.
This Sunday Pastor Adam will be preaching a message focusing on Jesus, the Spiritual Life and how (in light of the recent elections) these Wesleyan questions we're exploring can lead us to a renewed understanding of what it takes to make America great again. I hope you'll invite friends to join us at each of our worship services.
I also ask for your prayers this week as our group of 45 from Blue Springs and the West campus head to the Holy Land on Monday to explore what some people call the 5th gospel. Pray for the safety of our group and that our travels to these places where Jesus walked and taught might give us fresh insight into Jesus and his saving ministry in ways that are transformative.
I can’t wait to see you this weekend and take a look at all the upcoming activities and events . . .

Be a part of this 3-week study, where each participant will have access to a 21-day devotional complete with daily reading, personal reflection questions and practical ideas for living out our faith. The Wesley Challenge content is based upon the famous 21 questions of John and Charles Wesley’s notably nicknamed group, The Holy Club. The questions help us examine our relationship to God, Self and Others. The purpose of the Wesley 21 Day Challenge is to go beyond mere words and develop the spiritual habits that lead us toward a thriving Christian life. Join a small group or create your own group of 2-3 other couples or singles. Engage in the daily GPS Guide readings and connect through Resurrection’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for helpful prompts. Sign up at Guest Services or online. For questions, contact Mike.Ash@cor.org.
