From Pastor Molly: There's Work to Do
It's been a wild week; my emotions have been on a rollercoaster throughout this election season, and particularly in the past week. I know that members of our church have diverse political opinions; for me, Tuesday's election results were deeply disappointing, and I confess I am having a hard time seeing how others can't see it my way. In the avalanche of political analyses of these past few days, I get the sense more and more that people of different opinion are pulling apart more than they are pulling together.
Honestly, knowing that some of the people who voted differently than I did are a part of this congregation is giving me hope, because it prevents me from reducing "them" to a caricature. Because we are the body of Christ, I know we have allegiance to something more powerful than any political system. Because we choose to belong in the expansive love of God, we are people who are committed to compassion and justice. At the heart of our gospel is a self-sacrifical love for all our neighbors--even our enemies. Regardless of what political party holds office, we commit ourselves to living differently in the world.
And, by the grace of God, there's some work for us to do. Here, in front of us, there are neighbors to love. There are hungry people to help feed, strangers and refugees to welcome, a world to take care of. People whose stories we can listen to, and who we can visit, and offer care.
This Sunday, as a part of worship, we will be celebrating our Shared Bread ministry. Tomorrow, November 11, will be the 24th Anniversary of this meaningful ministry that offers food and hospitality to hungry people in our community. It continues to be one tangible, powerful way that our congregation gets to participate in the building of God's Kingdom. May we continue that work, together.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly Vetter
We're transforming the Fellowship Hall into a fun Redondo Pier scene for our fundraising event on Saturday, from 5-8--I hope you'll join us. You can get dinner from the food trucks, bid on silent auction items, and enjoy a talent show featuring some of our amazing church folks. It'll be good to be together.

Shared Bread Sunday
Jonah 4:9-11
Scripture Text for: Jonah 4:9 God asked Yonah, “Is it right for you to be so angry about the castor-bean plant?” He answered, “Yes, it’s right for me to be so angry that I could die!” 10 Adonai said, “You’re concerned over the castor-bean plant, which cost you no effort; you didn’t make it grow; it came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 So shouldn’t I be concerned about the great city of Ninveh, in which there are more than 120,000 people who don’t know their right hand from their left — not to mention all the animals?”
"Loving Your Enemies "
John Wesley's Notes=Commentary for: Jonah 4:9-11
Verse 9
[9] And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
I do well to be angry — If in the violence of this passion I should die (as some have) yet were I not to blame. What a speech! Verily the law made nothing perfect!
Verse 10
[10] Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
Laboured — Thou didst not set it.
Grow — Nor didst thou water or give growth to it.
Verse 11
[11] And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
I — The God of infinite compassions and goodness.
That great city — Wouldest thou have me less merciful to such a goodly city, than thou art to a weed? Who cannot discern - Here are more than six-score innocents who are infants.
Much cattle — Beside men, women and children who are in Nineveh, there are many other of my creatures that are not sinful, and my tender mercies are and shall be over all my works. If thou wouldest be their butcher, yet I will be their God. Go Jonah, rest thyself content and be thankful: that goodness, which spared Nineveh, hath spared thee in this thy inexcusable frowardness. I will be to repenting Nineveh what I am to thee, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and I will turn from the evil which thou and they deserve.

During last Sunday's sermon Pastor Molly invited us to talk to our seat-mates about have we ever been invited to replace someone? I was visiting with Joy and it came to me that in 1969 I was invited by the Chair of Finance, Bill Enderson and the church pastor, Rev. Harold Johnson to become church Treasurer, replacing two fine men who were sharing the job. Little did I know that this new position would by mine for over ten years!. Be careful who you say yes to.
The fact is, I am still chairing one of the three money counting teams each Sunday four months out of each year. I have a wonderful team consisting of June Shors, Pat Godfrey and Duff Means and our next month of service is set for December, 2016. No one has ever asked if they could replace us for several years. As I said above, be careful who or what you say yes to.
Last week's listing of several "All Saints" included just two close friends of mine, Bob Thune and Mary Emerson, both of whom left us this year. There were twenty seven listed and remembered in the beautiful ceremony with candles and bell ringing as their names were read and prayers said. It is a solemn time for all, but remembering those we love is always important. If you've lost one of your relatives or friends, we all sympathize with you. Remembering those who have gone before us is an important duty of being a church parishioner.

November 12: It's More Than...
Food Trucks, a Silent Auction, a Talent Show
Please join us for an evening of fun, to support the ministries of our church! On Saturday, November 12, from 5-8 pm. We've got a face painter coming, and will transform the patio and hall into a Redondo beach landscape, with lawn games, space to eat and fellowship. Come hang out, have fun, and support our ministries.
If you have items for the auction, please bring them to church by 3pm on Friday! We are still looking for up to 4 people to welcome people and hand out programs--email Ernie to volunteer.
Invite friends! We have a flyer that we hope you will help pass out to others you know.
Charge Conference at Church Council Meeting on November 21
Our November Church Council meeting will be Monday, November 21 at 7pm in Epworth Lounge. Better Together: Pledge Campaign for 2017 Update
Thank you to everyone who has given a pledge of financial support to the church for 2017. So far, we have received 57 pledges, for $226,000; we are grateful to have received several pledges from people who have never pledged before! We hope to receive $300,000 in pledges, to support an annual ministry budget of $500,000. As comparison, for 2016, we received 61 pledges, totaling $280,000.
We invite you to consider making a pledge of financial support to our church for 2017, if you haven't already. When you make a pledge of giving to the church, at least two things happen. It helps put your faith at the center of your financial decisions, because giving to the church is something you plan from the beginning. (Scripture speaks of this as “first fruits”—that we give to God first, not just what’s left over.) It also helps us as a congregation, to make more strategic plans for ministry for the coming year. We hope you will give prayerful thought to whether this is a step you are willing to take.
-Your 2016 Stewardship Team: Gary Baughman, Deirdre Briese, Grace and Jon Saari, Holly Walters, Stephen Hale and Pastor Molly Vetter

Hailing from the small coastal town of Bangor in Northern Ireland, the Rend Collective is a group of "twenty-somethings" that gathered at Rend, what the band describes as "a ministry for spiritually hungry young adults, desperately seeking an authentic, raw and real expression of church, which was informally pastored by bandleader, Gareth Gilkeson." Their first album – Organic Family Hymnal – was released in 2010, and was followed by a string of hits in the contemporary Christian music world. Their music is based around older instruments - their native Irish folk instruments, old rock and roll guitars and assorted other whimsical musical toys - and has a raw, uninhibited style that gets the toes tapping and the feet stomping. They don't call themselves a folk band, but insist rather "We are not actually an indie-folk band - despite all the beards and bow-ties and banjos. We are a celebration band. It's just a coincidence that folk music and celebration make a great pairing!" Their song Build Your Kingdom Here, released on their 2012 album Homemade Worship by Handmade People, like so many of their tunes, is a classic foot-stomper that never fails to engage the listener.
On September 26, 1976, 14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr. placed a note on the bulletin board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland, looking for members to form a band. 6 people responded. They began as Feedback, performing covers of other artists' music, then in 1977 changed their name to The Hype with 5 members. In March of 1978, they phased out their fifth man and changed their name to U2, playing their own original material. Their 1st big break came when they won a competition on St. Patrick's Day, 1978, which provided them with the opportunity to record a demo that would be heard by CBS Ireland, a record label. Since then U2 has gone on to release 13 studio albums and have become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, selling over 170 million albums worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked U2 as 22nd on their list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
40 is a setting of Psalm 40, and was released as part of the 1983 album War, and has been included in no less than six other albums. The song was recorded at the end of the recording session for the album, and bassist Adam Clayton had already left the studio. The three remaining members decided they didn't have a strong song to close the album, but were being thrown out of the studio because their time was up. So they quickly wrote and recorded 40 (in about 20 minutes, according to Bono – born Paul David Hewson) with The Edge (born David Howell Evans) switching off between guitar and bass. At live performances, Clayton and The Edge would switch instruments and the band members would begin to leave the stage – first Bono, then Clayton, then The Edge, and finally drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. The crowd would continue to sing the refrain "How long....to sing this song..." long after the band had left the stage.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has become an icon in the world of theatrical music, writing his first pieces, a suite of 6 pieces, at the age of nine. Over the years he has written 13 musicals (several of which have run for over a decade both on the West End of London and on Broadway), a song cycle, a set of variations, 2 film scores and a Latin Requiem Mass. The Requiem was written during 1984 in memory of his father, William Lloyd Webber, a composer and organist. It was premiered in 1985, conducted by Lorin Maazel, with soloists Placido Domingo, Sarah Brightman (Webber's wife at the time) and boy soprano Paul Miles-Kingston. It contained elements of his melodic, pop-oriented style with more angular, austere musical environments. The recording proved to be quite popular, although the piece is seldom performed live, partially due to the large forces needed and the fact that the vocal writing is very tricky and demanding.
The Requiem debuted in Los Angeles in 1985 at the Shrine Theatre. It was the backdrop for the American Ballet Theatre, under the leadership of Mikhael Baryshnikov. I was singing with the Roger Wagner Chorale at the time, and we were hired to be the pit choir for the performance. It turned out that the iconic Pie Jesu, which we've done here at FUMCRB, was choreographed and danced by Baryshnikov himself, and subsequently, none of us were paying much attention to the conductor (our eyes were glued to the stage – we had, after all, the best seats in the house). Listening to the opening movement, I was struck by the rich, angular harmonies and felt that it could be adapted to a standard Kyrie Eleison. The Kyrie Eleison (Greek for "Lord, have mercy") is the first movement of the Mass Ordinary, the elements of the Catholic mass that are included in every Mass – Kyrie (Lord have mercy), Gloria (Glory to God in the highest), Credo (The Creed), Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). The anthem this week is my adaptation of the opening movement of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Requiem.

Redondo Beach, California, United States 1st United Methodist Church eNews: "Better Together, All Saints, Stewardship: This Sunday: Better Together. Last Day To Purchase Wreaths
From Pastor Molly: Passing the Mantle
In my last years of college, as I was actively trying to understand my call to ordained ministry, a pastor named Nancy mentored me with great love. She had an amazing ability to know just when I needed encouragement; she always conveyed a sense of peace, a sense that everything was going to be okay, a sense of wellness. Even as she mentored me, she was dying of leukemia. I would visit with intentions of being a support to her; she would gift me with a sense of God's Holy Spirit that was blessing beyond measure.
Nancy died just before I started seminary, and I was given the gift of one of her clergy robes. I was not yet ready to be a pastor, and I remember feeling a complicated weight of responsibility, loss and affirmation as I held that robe. I sometimes wonder if that's some small piece of what the prophet Elisha felt when he received Elijah's mantle, as Elijah was taken up to heaven.
This weekend, we'll share that story of transition, as we celebrate All Saints' Sunday. This year, we lost some amazing, faithful people from our church community: I think of Bob Thune's steady faithfulness, of Mary Emerson's spirited desire to be a part of making the world better, of Betty Addis and John Schmidt's service to Shared Bread. These are just small pieces of these people's lives. And they are just a few examples of the beautiful people in the cloud of witnesses who we celebrate this weekend.
We are also celebrating those who pick up the mantle, too: in Holy Communion at 8:30 and in Baptism at 10:30, we remember that the Holy Spirit resides on and in us, too, here and now. Additionally, as we turn in stewardship pledge cards for 2017, we have a chance to offer up our commitments to living out our faith as a part of this community. I look forward to sharing that with you this weekend.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly Vetter
We're having a potluck this Sunday, after the 10:30 service--I hope you can join us for food and fellowship!

4 Eliyahu said to him, “Elisha, please wait here, because Adonai has sent me to Yericho.” He replied, “As Adonai lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Yericho. 5 The guild prophets of Yericho approached Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Adonai is taking your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he answered; “say no more.”
6 Eliyahu said to him, “Please wait here, because Adonai has sent me to the Yarden.” He replied, “As Adonai lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty of the guild prophets went and stood watching them from a distance, while they stood by the Yarden. 8 Then Eliyahu took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it; and the water divided itself to the left and to the right; so that they crossed on dry ground. 9 After they had crossed, Eliyahu said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away from you.” Elisha said, “Please! Let a double share of your spirit be on me!” 10 He replied, “You have requested a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, you will get what you asked for; but if not, you won’t.”
11 Suddenly, as they were walking on and talking, there appeared a fiery chariot with horses of fire; and as it separated the two of them from each other, Eliyahu went up into heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Isra’el!” Then he lost sight of him. Seizing his clothes, he tore them in half. 13 Then he picked up Eliyahu’s cloak, which had fallen off him. Standing on the bank of the Yarden, 14 he took the cloak that had fallen off Eliyahu, struck the water and said, “Where is Adonai, the God of Eliyahu?” But when he actually did strike the water, it divided itself to the left and to the right; then Elisha crossed over.
15 When the guild prophets of Yericho saw him in the distance, they said, “The spirit of Eliyahu does rest on Elisha.” Advancing to meet him, they prostrated themselves on the ground before him
"Passing the Mantle"
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for 2 Kings 2:1-15
Verse 1
[1] And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
About to take, … — It is supposed, (tho' not expressly revealed) that Elijah flourished about twenty years, before he was translated, body and soul, to heaven, only undergoing such a change, as was necessary to qualify him for being an inhabitant in that world of Spirits. By translating him, God gave in that dark and degenerate age, a very sensible proof of another life, together with a type of the ascension of Christ, and the opening of the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Verse 2
[2] And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.
Tarry here — This he desires, either, 1. That being left alone, he might better prepare himself for his great change. Or, 2. Out of indulgence to Elisha, that he might not be overwhelmed with grief at so sad a sight. Or, 3. That he might try his love, and whet his desire to accompany him; it being highly convenient for God's honour, that there should be witnesses of so glorious a translation.
To Beth-el — Which was truth, tho' not the whole truth: for he was to go a far longer journey. But he was first to go to Beth-el, as also to Jericho, to the schools of the prophets there, that he might comfort, and strengthen their hearts in God's work, and give them his dying counsels.
Verse 3
[3] And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
And said — This was revealed to some of the sons of the prophets, and by them to the whole college. In the kingdom of Judah they had priest and Levites, and the temple service. The want of these in the kingdom of Israel, God graciously made up by these colleges, where men were trained up and employed, in the exercises of religion, and whither good people resorted, to solemnize the appointed feasts, with prayer and hearing, tho' they had not conveniencies for sacrifice.
From thy head — Heb. from above thy head: which phrase may respect, either, the manner of sitting in schools, where the scholar sat at his master's feet. Or, the manner of Elijah's translation, which was to be by a power sent from heaven, to take him up thither.
Hold you your peace — Do not aggravate my grief, nor divert me with any unseasonable discourses. He speaks as one that was himself, and would have them calm and sedate, and with awful silence waiting the event.
Verse 7
[7] And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
To view — To observe this great event, Elijah's translation to heaven, which they expected every moment: and whereof they desired to be spectators, not to satisfy their own curiosity, but that they might be witnesses of it to others.
Verse 8
[8] And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
Smote the waters — These waters of old yielded to the ark, now to the prophet's mantle; which to those that wanted the ark, was an equivalent token of God's presence. When God will take his children to himself, death is the Jordan, which they must pass through. And they find a way thro' it, a safe and comfortable way. The death of Christ has divided those waters, that the ransomed of the Lord may pass over.
Verse 9
[9] And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
A double portion — Or, rather double to what the rest of the sons of the prophets receive at thy request. He alludes to the double portion of the first-born, Deuteronomy 21:17. But though Elisha desired no more, yet God gave him more than he desired or expected; and he seems to have had a greater portion of the gifts of God's Spirit, than even Elijah had.
Verse 10
[10] And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
A hard thing — A rare and singular blessing, which I cannot promise thee, which only God can give; and he gives it only when, and to whom he pleaseth.
If thou seest — This sign he proposed, not without the direction of God's Spirit, that hereby he might engage him more earnestly to wait, and more fervently to pray for this mercy.
Verse 11
[11] And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
A chariot of fire — In this form the angels appeared. The souls of all the faithful, are carried by an invisible guard of angels, into the bosom of Abraham. But Elijah being to carry his body with him, this heavenly guard appeared visibly: Not in an human shape, tho' so they might have borne him in their arms, but in the form of a chariot and horses, that he may ride in state, may ride in triumph, like a prince, like a conqueror. See the readiness of the angels to do the will of God, even in the meanest services for the heirs of salvation! Thus he who had burned with holy zeal for God and his honour, was now conveyed in fire into his immediate presence.
Verse 12
[12] And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
My father — So he calls him for his fatherly affection to him, and for his fatherly authority which he had over him, in which respect the scholars of the prophets are called their sons. He saw his own condition like that of a fatherless child, and laments it accordingly.
The chariot, … — Who by thy example, and counsels, and prayers, and power with God, didst more for the defence and preservation of Israel than all their chariots and horses. The expression alludes to the form of chariots and horses which he had seen.
Verse 13
[13] He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
Which fell — God so ordering it for Elisha's comfort, and the strengthening of his faith, as a pledge, that together with Elijah's mantle, his Spirit should rest upon him. And Elijah himself was gone to a place, where he needed not the mantle, either to adorn him, or to shelter him from weather, or to wrap his face in.
Verse 14
[14] And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
The Lord — Who at Elijah's request divided these waters, and is as able to do it again.
Verse 15
[15] And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
Bowed themselves — They had been trained up in the schools: Elisha was taken from the plough. Yet, when they perceive, that God is with him, and that this is the man whom he delights to honour, they readily submit to him as their head and father, as the people to Joshua when Moses was dead. "Those that appear to have God's Spirit and presence with them, ought to have our esteem and best affections, notwithstanding the meanness of their extraction and education."

Special Music: "Shall We Gather at the River" arranged by Aaron Copeland.
1. Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?
Refrain:
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.
2. On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.
Refrain:
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.
3. Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we ev'ry burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.
Refrain:
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.
4. Soon we'll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
Refrain:
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

Last Sunday I dedicated the church flowers in memory of my late wife Ada Belle. Halloween would have been our 74th wedding anniversary. Why Halloween? It was 1942 during World War II, I was in the U.S. Coast Guard and that is the day they let me off to have a wedding. We didn't care that it was a holiday. The evening wedding, held at Southwest Community Methodist Church, L.A. was followed by a drive to Santa Barbara during a blackout for our honeymoon in my 1932 Ford V8 3-window coupe.
This is a Sunday, Nov. 6th, to make your financial pledge for 2017. Our financial workers need to know about how much to spend or raise to keep our church bills paid as well as staff and other items. Your pledge helps them calculate their costs and expenses for the year. Vote for our church.
This Sunday, being All Saints Sunday, gives us a chance to remember those loved and remembered during our lives this year. However, it has been several years since a member of my family passed away and I miss them just as much now as then. We all have beautiful memories of loved ones, of important friends, neighbors, associates and others who have been important to us. It is proper to remember them in prayer and in thought as this day passes. I have been blessed with so many dear friends, many from this church and I thank our God for them all.

Coming at Church
Better Together: an invitation to giving
We invite you to consider making a pledge of financial support to our church for 2017.
This Sunday, November 6, we will dedicate our pledges during worship. We encourage you to come ready to make a commitment then!
-Your 2016 Stewardship Team: Gary Baughman, Deirdre Briese, Grace and Jon Saari, Holly Walters, Stephen Hale and Pastor Molly Vetter
You can read more about our church budget, and also submit a pledge online, here.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

Book Club: Book Club met to discuss D. Brown's "The Boys in the Boat." We welcomed a new reader, Susanne Paulson, to our group. All twelve in attendance spoke glowingly and enthusiastically about the book, and we send a recommendation to our church newsletter readers to find a copy and enjoy this true story of the 1936 Olympic rowing team from University of Washington. We are planning a pre-Christmas party at the home of Sally Donner on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7pm. The book to be discussed is F. Backman's "A Man Called Ove," which has been a bestseller this year.

Since 1947, CWS has helped organize Crop Hunger Walks all over the US, as we seek to end hunger in the US and around the world. Food Trucks, a Silent Auction, a Talent Show
Please join us for an evening of fun, to support the ministries of our church! On Saturday, November 12, from 5-8 pm. The event is free--there will be delicious dinner and dessert to purchase from some of LA's best food trucks, free entertainment from the talent of our church and community, and a silent auction of items to benefit our church ministries.
We've got a face painter coming, and will transform the patio and hall into a Redondo beach landscape, with lawn games, space to eat and fellowship. Come hang out, have fun, and support our ministries.
Invite friends! We have a flyer that we hope you will help pass out to others you know.
Donate items for our silent auction!
Proceeds will support our church ministries, including great programs for our children and youth, meaningful worship and spiritual growth, serving the community and more.
We will have lots of things that will be up for bid! We are looking for donations now, from individuals or businesses. We encourage you use the theme "Better Together" to put auction items together--perhaps a pairing of things that are fun together? All donations are tax-deductible. Submit an item through our online form!
Get Your Act Together!
There's still time to plan to perform live in a family-friendly talent show. The only rule is that you can't do it alone--you have to involve others! So find a duet partner, plan a short skit, play instruments together... People of all ages are encouraged to perform--not just church members, but friends and neighbors, too. Mary Ann is willing to accompany other performers, too--so we encourage you to dream, scheme and plan.
Email us if you are ready to sign up. Show Coordinator Don Jones will be on the patio Sunday, to answer questions, too. We hope you will share your gifts!
More info, email Ann.
Responding to the World's Needs
Redondo Beach First supports various missions throughout the year and we have come up a way for all of us to help. Just bring your plastic bottles and aluminum cans to church every Sunday. By recycling we can support the following missions: Corazon, Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR provides 100% of the funds donated for relief and aid around the world. Some of these programs are Syrian refugee relief, emergency response to Katrina and Haiti catastrophes. They also support programs to eradicate hunger, treat water, end malaria and fight HIV/AIDS. In 2014, UMCOR spent $58 million in support of these various programs. Please bring your cans and bottles.
Support missions through recycling!

Robert Lowry was responsible creating for several familiar hymns, although probably the most loved is Shall We Gather At The River. He described the writing experience as follows:
"One afternoon in July, 1864, when I was pastor at Hanson Place Baptist Church, Brooklyn, the weather was oppressively hot, and I was lying on a lounge in a state of physical exhaustion. I was almost incapable of bodily exertion, and my imagination began to take to itself wins. Visions of the future passed before me with startling vividness.
The imagery of the Apocalypse took the form of a tableau. Brightest of all were the throne, the heavenly river, and the gathering of the saints. My soul seemed to take new life from the celestial outlook. I began to wonder why the hymn-writers had said so much about the 'river of death' and so little about 'the pure water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb." As I mused the words began to construct themselves. They came first as a question of Christian inquiry, 'Shall we gather?' Then they broke out in a chorus, as an answer of Christian faith, 'Yes, we'll gather.' On this question and answer the hymn developed itself. The music came with the hymn."
The song was first published in the 1865 Sunday School book Happy Voices. It went on to be included in most hymnals and became a "standard". In 1954, Aaron Copland arranged it for solo voice and piano, and included it in his collection of "Old American Songs, Set 2, Number 4". In 1964, it was arranged for SATB choir by his student, Ray Wilding-White, which has since gone on to become part of classic repertoire.
Matt Redman is an English Christian worship leader currently based in Brighton. He has won 10 Dove Awards for everything from Worship Song of the Year 2005 (for Blessed Be Your Name) to Songwriter of the Year 2013. His album 10,000 Reasons was released in 2012 and the title track went on to be #1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart, where it remained for 13 weeks. 10,000 Reasons also won Grammy Awards in 2013 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song and Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance. Today, Matt and his wife, Beth, are members of St. Peter's Church in Brighton, England and have 5 children.
O God, Our Help In Ages Past was originally titled Our God, Our Help In Ages Past. John Wesley changed the first word of Isaac Watts' original 1719 lyrics when he included it in his hymnal Psalms and Hymns in 1738. The most familiar melody sung to those lyrics was composed by William Croft in 1708 when he was organist of the church St. Anne, Soho, hence the name of the tune St. Anne. Isaac Watts' original version of the song had 9 verses, although it's usually limited to stanzas 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Later on it was used by other composers, including Handel, Bach, Arthur Sullivan, Carl Ruggles and Ralph Vaughn Williams. It was sung at the funeral of Winston Churchill, was used in the score for the 1963 movie Tom Jones (the score won an Oscar) and is the University Anthem of UC Berkley.
