Continuing the Advent Journey
DAY 18:
To me, this text is one of the most beautiful and poignant moments in all of Scripture. He was old and his days were running out. Yet, he had a promise. He would see God’s salvation before he died. Each day, waiting, looking, hoping. And then, one day he realizes something is up. He feels God’s leading to go to the Temple, and there, he sees Mary and Joseph and a baby. And he knows. He knows that God hears him. He knows that God sees him. And he knows that God cares. He sees all of that when he sees the baby.
We celebrate the birth of that baby and we anticipate the return of that lowly born king in the clouds of glory. And like Simeon, we can know that God hears us, sees us and cares.
Luke 2:25-32 (niv)“Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”
A FEW QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:Is there a promise that you hold on to you that you refuse to let circumstances alter? Like Simeon, you hold on beyond hope? What might that be and how is waiting on the Lord shaping your faith?
Simeon recognized this baby as salvation and a revelation for all people. Can you connect your church involvement, serving, tithing, praying to that same vision? What difference does that make?
How can Simeon’s life spur us on to go “all in” in regard to our faith, our service, our commitment?

Save the date and invite your friends and family for a great celebration!
Christmas Eve services will be at 2, 4, and 6 pm on Saturday, December 24th!
