Advent Devotion from Society of St. Andrew "Advent Devotions 2016" of Big Island, Virginia, United States for Saturday, December 17, 2016 "Irrational Fear"
Scripture: Psalm 23:4
Psalm 23:4 Even if I pass through death-dark ravines,
I will fear no disaster; for you are with me;
your rod and staff reassure me.

Several years ago, our family vacation included a stop at a Native American village in the Great Smoky Mountains. The children were excited when we parked the car and saw a swinging bridge that we would cross to get to our destination. I had never been on a swinging bridge before and did not know the reaction that I would have when the children decided that the bridge could indeed swing! The family scurried across the bridge and left me in tears in the middle of the bridge. I did finally and fearfully manage to cross the bridge. When we were ready to leave, I discovered a road that lead to the parking lot and the bridge became a memory.
As I recall this vacation memory, I think of the many times and situations in our scriptures that the people of God were afraid, fearing the unknown. The fears of Mary and Joseph, facing an unplanned pregnancy... The fear Zechariah and the shepherds felt at the appearance of an angel...Those were real fears! We would feel the same fear if we received a message from God presented by an angel! In each situation, it is obedience to God’s will that replaces fear with joy.
Prayer: Lord God, help us remember that when fear overtakes us, we can turn that fear over to you and find the joy that obedience to you always brings. Amen.[Doris Hedrick, Natural Bridge Station, Virginia]
