Champions for Children Awards Dinner 2017
The San Fernando Valley Refugee Children Center will be hosting Champions for Children Awards Dinner on Friday, March 17, 2017.
This event brings advocates, government representatives, and other supporters for refugees and immigrants for a combined awards and fundraising event. The program will feature California Senator, Ricardo Lara, an advocate for immigrants’ rights as keynote speaker. Honorees will include Congressman Tony Cardena, CEO, and Founder of Penny Lane Centers, Ivelise Markovits, and Reverend David Farley of Justice & Compassion Ministries, Cal-Pac Conference.
Besides raising much-needed support for the center, the organizers hope to create awareness about the refugee crisis. The educational component will include a compelling short video illustrating the work accomplished at the center and informational material.
Pastor Fred Morris, Board of Directors President, explained, “Kids are fleeing for their lives. Thousands of children don’t make it through the journey.” Children are fleeing their homeland, not because of economic reasons but searching asylum from gangs. The center provides refugee children with legal representation. Without an attorney, children are sent back to face certain death.
The Board of Directors along with the leadership team from San Fernando Valley Refugee Children Center invite the public and community to take part in the event. There will be an opportunity drawing for a Hawaii vacation as well as other auction items including Maroon 5 items during the event.
The San Fernando Valley Refugee Children Center, Inc is one of four Welcome Centers in California established under Cal-Pac’s You Are Not Alone initiative.

As Jesus is, So Are We in This World for Wednesday, 15 March 2017 of The United Methodist Church Prays in Nashville, Tennessee, United States

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 2017
A Word from John Wesley
Thus doth Jesus save His people from their sins; not only from outward sins, but from the sins of their hearts. “True,” say some, “but not till death; not in this world.” Nay, St. John says, “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because, as He is, so are we in this world.” The apostle here, beyond all contradiction, speaks of himself and other living Christians, of whom he flatly affirms, that not only at or after death, but “in this world,” they are as their Master.[John Wesley, The Character of a Methodist, ¶12]
A Hymn from Charles Wesley
1. Who can sound the depths unknown
Of thy redeeming grace?
Grace that gave thine only Son
To save a ruined race!
2. Millions of transgressors poor
Thou hast for Jesu’s sake forgiven,
Made them of thy favour sure,
And snatched from hell to heaven.
3. Millions more thou ready art
To save, and to forgive;
Every soul, and every heart
Of man thou wouldst receive.
4. Father, now accept of mine,
Which now through Christ I offer thee:
Tell me now, in love divine,
That thou hast pardoned me!(Collection-1781, #236:3 & 4)
Questions for Reflection:
God of amazing compassion, lover of our wayward race, you bring to birth a pilgrim people, and call us to be a blessing for ourselves and all the world. We pray for grace to take your generous gift and step with courage on this holy path, confident in the radiant life that is your plan for us, made known and given in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Questions for Reflection:
- In John Wesley’s description of the character of a Methodist above, what can you affirm and celebrate?
- There is a clear emphasis on what God can do now. Is there anything in this part of Wesleyan theology that challenges or offends you?
- Do you believe what Charles believes about God when he writes: “Millions more thou ready art/To save, and to forgive?
- Every soul, and every heart/ Of man thou wouldst receive.” Why or why not?
- Do you see God yearning to reach, heal, restore and forgive people? Do you feel drawn to respond to God’s invitation to come to Christ?
God of amazing compassion, lover of our wayward race, you bring to birth a pilgrim people, and call us to be a blessing for ourselves and all the world. We pray for grace to take your generous gift and step with courage on this holy path, confident in the radiant life that is your plan for us, made known and given in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
