YOUTH NEWS
Sierra Service Project Work Teams
Need some yard work help? Have a home improvement project that could use some help? The youth attending SSP this summer are available for a limited number of projects, on a first-come, first-served basis. The youth want to thank you in advance for your love, support, and generosity.
If you’d like more information about the Sierra Service Project, I encourage you to check out their website: www.sierraserviceproject.org, or send me an email youthlorrie@gmail.com.
Youth Group Bake Sale Was a HUGE Success Thank you to all of the bakers, sellers, and buyers at the youth bake sale last month. The treats were delicious and the generosity of everyone who purchased
the goodies was incredible!
Confirmation Weekend on May 19th & 20th Don’t miss this special weekend when we welcome our new young members.
Twelve youth have been studying what it means to be a Christian and a Methodist, and will be taking the next step through Confirmation at all three services. You’ll have the opportunity to speak with these amazing young people following worship, where they will share pieces of their lives with you.
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
A De-love-ry (Agape-Love Delivery)
You are the best person Jesus can use for ultra-specialized “Agape Love Delivery.” For this article, I will call that “A De-love-ry”.
Jesus knows that there is no one who is better at being you than you.
God made you, Jesus forgives and washes you up.
The Holy Spirit guides you close up.
So who better than you to Deliver God’s Agape Love?
There are people you know better than any other human.
There are people you know in unique ways.
You are the specialist at A De-love-ry from Jesus to that person.
One of your unique gifts is the way that you can build up that other person. You will see moments of kindness and can make a passing comment like, “Thanks for saying that nice thing. You probably made their day.” You can draw attention to the good things that another person does that show a good heart, an open mind, a kind attitude.
I saw a great video this week about Response-Ability. Unfortunately, I can’t find it now, so I will paraphrase an insight:
On Monday, look for three people to appreciate you more.
On Friday, look for three people to appreciate them more.
Then see which made you happier, drawing attention to yourself or lifting up others.
You are capable of helping another person’s life, lifting them up just a little, making their day a little easier. Have fun with your “A De-love-ry.”
Pastor Brian Kent
GATHERING SPOT GOING GREEN
You may have noticed a few changes at Gathering Spot lately. The Gathering Spot crews have joined together to reduce the use of single-use plastic.
Single-use plastic items are used once and discarded. We’re now
using stainless steel silverware, which can be cleaned and reused, wooden stir sticks, paper fruit cups, and wooden toothpicks to spear fruit.
Less visible changes include using the donut boxes to cover the donuts during service instead of plastic wrap and placing recyclables in the church recycling bin.
Did you know that a church member takes the used coffee grounds home and composts them?
We welcome suggestions for going green! Email your ideas to Suzanne Lee-Vigilia, Gathering Spot Coordinator, at suzannelv28@gmail.com or Linda Korenman at lakore94@aol.com.
MISSIONS CORNER
I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me ... As you did it to
one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.  (From Matthew 25)
Our church is blessed with so many opportunities to respond to these words of Jesus. Here are several avenues of response:
With regard to the asylum seekers recently waiting and hoping to be processed by immigration officials, we are donating $2,000 from our undesignated missions fund to Christ United Methodist Church to help with basic needs in housing and caring for many who will be arriving at the church. In addition, please help by donating the following which Christ UMC has requested: diapers size 2 to 5 and wipes, new underwear and socks for children and women, new or gently used clothing and shoes for babies, toddlers, children and teens, laundry soap and dryer sheets, and gift cards to grocery stores and Walmart. Please place items in the marked bins or boxes located by the food cart.
The May missions offering is for the orphanage in Tijuana, which currently houses 40 teens at the cost of $700 per month per resident. This orphanage is the only one in TJ that houses teenagers and is very much in need of ongoing help to feed, clothe, educate, and support these young people, as well as giving them an alternative to living on the street, being sex trafficked themselves, and being recruited by gangs. Please give generously to this life changing ministry.
The Good Neighbor Center continues to need our food donations for needs in the community, and their shelves continue to need more supplies.
Please bring cans, or cases, of non-perishables to the food cart to help as you are able.
As I was growing up, in grade school our Social Studies teacher had a sign in his classroom that read: “To whom much is given, much shall be required.” We are those to whom much has been given, and those who are able to give “to the least of these,” brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. May God continue to bless them, and us, as we seek to be faithful to this calling. (Carol Millspaugh, Missions and Outreach chair)
The deadline for submissions for the next Times of Hope is 9:00AM, MONDAY, JUNE 4, 2018 FOR JUNE 10-JULY 8, 2018 and beyond.

MUSIC NOTES
This month in the music ministry ...
May flowers us with wonderful music! Come to our Saturday Night Alive (SNA) services and worship with us this month! The SNA band plays a mixture of top hits from KLOVE and old favorites of the 90’s, featuring songs of Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Lincoln Brewster, Phil Wickham, Third Day, Selah, MercyMe, and more.
Come Sundays and hear the adult choirs — New Wine Ensemble at 9am and Voices of Hope at 10:45. Look for the song lyrics of their anthems in the bulletin each week to just follow along, or to minister to you during the week. Come and be blessed on May 20 and hear the Joyful Noise Children’s Choir sing, “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus!” Those who will be sharing their musical gifts this month during the Sunday morning offerings are pianist Beth Jones on May 13, the Axios Youth Choir on May 19 & 20, soprano Rebecca Colby on May 27, and the adult choirs with guest composers on June 3. The music ministry welcomes all who are interested in sharing a musical gift, or gifts of hospitality, photography, kitchen artistry, prayer, or of the arts in general! Talk to our director, Wendy Kallen, or our choir manager, Ginny Lorenz by calling the church office.
Feeling God’s Nudges ...
There are so many opportunities to serve and glorify God in the music ministry. Think about joining us in the fall. Sing with the adult choir at 10:45, ring with the Hope Ringers bell choir, join us for Yuletide or Holy Week or the CCS composer festival, help with ushering or greeting a concert, serve at a reception, join the concert committee, work on the audio/visual team, join the flute
choir, sing in the axios youth choir or joyful noise children’s choir, take pictures for us at an event, help with photo albums, become a prayer warrior, decorate a bulletin board ... If you’re feeling God’s nudge, pray about it and think about being a part
of the music ministry. We would love to have you! Email us at wendy.kallen@hopeumc.com
Carry the Cross through Song Composer Festival (CCS) • June 1-3
In a few weeks, we will have our 4th annual CCS Composer Festival! For the first time, not 1, not 2, but 3 composers will be sharing their artistic gifts with our church! They compose, conduct, arrange, and facilitate music for church choirs in a worship setting. Our choirs here at Hope UMC sing so much of their music each week! These composers also facilitate music reading sessions
for music directors, and they collaborate with each other for new ideas, networking, and supporting one another. All of this is with God and His Word as the catalyst. So we help them Carry the Cross
through their Songs by hosting an event for them to do God’s work. Lloyd Larson, Joe Martin, and Joel Raney will be joining us this year. Look them up online and learn about their journeys of
their faith and careers. They will join us in worship on June 3, and end the weekend with a special concert at 2:00pm that they will conduct! Come and enjoy this unique experience! The concert is free,
and there will be a free-will offering. The concert will be followed by a meet-and-greet reception.
Choirs Going to Carnegie Hall • June 14-18
We are thrilled that we will be representing our music ministry in New York this June! What an amazing outreach experience. Church choirs from Ontario, Canada; Missouri, Minnesota, Georgia, Washington, North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, California, Pennsylvania, and Brazil will all join forces and sing Pepper Choplin’s “Our Father” Cantata together with full orchestra at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, June 17.
To be able to share God’s Word through song on a big secular stage is such an honor and privilege. I
thank the choirs in preparing this work throughout Lent, and we will take all of Hope UMC with us in our hearts and through our singing ...
Save the Date!
Bluegrass & BBQ • Saturday, Aug. 18 • 6:00pm
Don’t miss the Drought Tolerant Bluegrass band will be back with brisket, barbecue, and beans!
Children's Stuff
THANK YOU, FRANK WELTS!
A big Thank You to Frank Welts who made the step stools so our shortest Acolytes can more easily (and safely!) reach the candles on the Altar Table. We love having the children serve in worship and thanks to Frank’s woodworking skills, the children are more confident when they light the candles. If your child is in 2nd grade or older and would like to be an Acolyte, contact Marilyn Fink at finkmarilyn@sbcglobal.net or Carrie Jaquess in the church office (858.485.5840x103) and ask to be put on the list for the training
in the Fall.

HEART FOR HOPE EXTENDED by Cindy Gleason
Be the Light — a chance for Hope to help UMCOR prepare for disasters in 2018
The Hope Disaster Relief Team (HDRT) just returned from another successful trip to UMCOR-West.
This year the 11 members, John and Lynne McWhinney, Jim and Cindy Gleason, and Nancy Hulak, along with Joyce and Maury Pratt, Carolyn Sechrist, and Mary Ann Jones from San Dieguito UMC and Judith Kempter and Diane Taylor from La Jolla UMC, worked along side teams from New Mexico, Spokane, and Irvine at UMCOR West. Together, we created over 4,000 hygiene kits, sewed over 20 blankets for the homeless, volunteered at a thrift store that raises funds to train people to become employed in the retail industry, helped work on homes for Habitat for Humanity, and helped out at the Resource Store for Habitat.
Working at UMCOR-West, we were surprised to find there are not enough kits. First, in previous trips, there were boxes and cases filled with health kits to verify and get ready to ship. This year there was one small box. Second, the over 4, 000 kits that we worked on were made from scratch, using supplies purchased by UMCOR-West. One of the ways that Hope has helped is by donating funds for this
situation. This year, thanks to the generosity of Hope, $2,500 was donated to purchase supplies.
It is from both types of donations, kits and money, that UMCOR-West can be ready to help those affected by disasters in the upcoming months. It was apparent that more kits are needed. Please continue to bring supplies and kits to Hope during the month of May and place in the bins by the food cart. The kids will put the kits together on the last Sunday in May.
You can make a kit or donate any of the components. Each kit is made up of all new items:
o 1 Hand Towel
o 1 Nail file or Nail Clippers
o 1 Wash Cloth
o 1 Adult Toothbrush (wrapped or in original plastic)
o 1 Wrapped Bar of soap like Dial, Irish Spring, Lever 2000
o 6 Adult Band-Aids (in the wrapper)
o 1 Large or Medium Comb
o 1 gallon re-sealable plastic bag
Thank you for your help and support. It is through your generosity, that the light continues to shine to help those in need!
