HOPE FOR INJURED WARRIORS
Special Offering for July
Great news! Freedom Station II is expected to open in August 2018. It is located in
South Park just a few blocks away from Freedom Station I, which was dedicated in
2011. The new location is also close to the San Diego Naval Hospital, which makes it
convenient for the residents to get to their appointments.
It will take many hours and donated funds to renovate the new transitional housing
for the injured, which resembles Freedom Station I in layout and size. With the help
of the congregation, Hope Church will provide 9 sets of welcome baskets for the units.
Each set of baskets includes a laundry basket with cleaning supplies and the other basket contains food items and other necessities for a few days until they can settle in and shop or have someone shop for them. The welcome baskets are one of the high-lights of the move-in for these amazing service men and women.
Please be sure to note on the memo section of your check or pew envelope that the
donation is for Injured (Wounded) Warriors. If you have questions, please contact
Norma Dahlvig at NoDah@roadrunner.com or 858-484-3397.

Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
Dear People of Hope,
This summer we have 2 new “Pastors of Visitation.” They will do the visitation that Drew Davis has been doing — calling on Home Bound members and overseeing our regular visitation volunteers. They are a team of married and retired pastors, who also attend Hope United Methodist Church — Rev. Carol and Rev. Dick Millspaugh!
They each have many decades of pastoral experience. They have attended Hope UMC for several years. Carol Millspaugh is also the chair of our Missions and Outreach Committee.
I am personally thrilled for all of us that Dick and Carol have stepped forward to do this until a full-time replacement is hired. We love them and trust them deeply.
When you know of a home-bound member who needs a visit, please feel free to call the church office or call the Millspaughs at home at 858-365-7552.

MISSIONS CORNER
Fred Rogers, whom many of us may remember
from his children’s television program “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” said that when he was upset, as a child, over some bad news or crisis in the world around him, his mother told him to always look for the helpers, look for the people who came forward to assist and care for others in the midst of disasters.
Thank you, the congregation of Hope UMC, for
being some of those people who step up to help, in so many ways, and make a concrete difference for others in need.
Thank you to Carrie Jaquess and the Vacation Bible School for donations of new underwear for children at Perkins School in Barrio Logan, where about 30% of the children K-8th are homeless, and in need of underwear and socks. In August, the entire congregation will be asked to help with “Undies Sundays” for this important need. Also, thanks to
the Sunday School children for helping put together 60 disaster relief kits for those in need.
Thank you for donations of diapers, wipes, etc. for refugees at Christ UM Ministry Center where asylum seekers, mainly mothers, babies, and young children, are currently staying.
Canned goods (collected in the food cart) are always needed, especially in the summer when food donations are down, for the Good Neighbor Center, now at Christ Ministry Center also.
Al and Norma Dahlvig recently delivered extra food to Interfaith from Pastor Drew’s potluck, which do-nation was much appreciated. (Please contact a member of the Missions Committee if you have an event at church and would like to also donate food
after the event.)
Thank you for the June special offering gifts for Interfaith Community Services in Escondido: our $2800 will be matched by a special grant, resulting in a total of $5600! We also sent $1500 to the United Methodist Church in Khabarovsk, Russia, to
help with street children and the elderly there. The July special offering will be for Injured Warriors.
Upcoming news: Sunday, July 15, come SKYPE
with Cody and Vanessa Nelson, missionaries in Jordan, at 10:15 in the sanctuary to hear about their ministry.
Next meeting: Monday Aug. 20, 7 pm, Jones 6 – come join us!
— Carol Millspaugh, Chair, and Terry Sieck,
assistant chair
YOUTH NEWS
Sierra Service Project Team departs July 22
Twenty-two youth and five adults are heading off to serve in the South County of San Diego. Join us in church on July 22nd to pray for everyone’s safety and for the many blessings given and received on a mission trip like this one. We also ask for your continued prayers while we are serving.
You can follow the SSP team on the Hope UMC
Facebook page, and you can even send the participants mail. They have to dance to get their mail,
so this is a fun way to participate with the youth.
PLEASE SEND THEM SOME LOVE!
Send mail by USPS to:

Youth Group Dinners
Did you know 15-20 youth gather each week for games, discussions, and a sit-down dinner? Meals are a great time to catch up on busy lives, and to form enduring friendships. You can be a part of the magic. Consider donating a meal and joining the youth for dinner. It will be a blessing both for you and for the youth! Contact Lorrie Frost if you’re interested in contributing to a Thursday night dinner. youthlorrie@gmail.com.

MUSIC NOTES
This month in the music ministry ...
July is jazzin’ it up with jubilant music! Come hear the SNA band play throughout the summer!
The band will be debuting a new song called “No Matter What,” by Ryan Stevenson this month.
On July 8, our men’s quartet, GloryBound will lead us in worship. Then on July 15, Evan Vigilia will be singing a solo. What a treat! We have clarinetist, Geoff Gaebe, and flautist, Claire Jones playing on July 22, a dynamic duo! July 29 we are bringing back our vocal sextet, Voices in Praise, and looking forward to having them back!
Finally on August 5, our ladies sextet, Montage, will lead us in worship and also sing a very moving piece written by Joel Raney who was featured at our composer festival last month. The choirs will be taking a summer break, but in the meantime, it gives everyone a chance to rest, recharge, and sit with their families for a change! As the saying goes ... “where words fail, music speaks” ...
Come, worship, and be open to the music.
Feeling God’s Nudges ...
There are so many opportunities to serve and glorify God in the music ministry. Think about joining us in the fall. Sing with the adult choir at 10:45, ring with the Hope Ringers bell choir, join us for Yuletide or Holy Week or the CCS composer festival, help with ushering or greeting a concert, serve at a reception, join the concert committee,
work on the audio/visual team, join the flute choir, sing in the Axios youth choir or Joyful Noise children’s choir, take pictures for us at an event, help with photo albums, become a prayer warrior, decorate a bulletin board ... If you’re feeling God’s nudge, pray about it and think about being a part of the music ministry. We would love to have you! We are having a choir retreat on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 8:30am. Youth & children’s choirs, and bells start up in mid-Sept.
Yuletide starts Sept. 27 ... A really big need we have is the need for more A/V operators! Email us at wendy.kallen@hopeumc.com
Carnegie Hall Review
We had a fabulous trip to New York City last
month! What an outreach experience we had on
so many levels. We even had one of our choir
members witness to someone in the plane! Taxi cabs & Uber rides, Central Park & Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building & Grand Central Station, the 911 Memorial & Broadway show about 911 involving Newfoundland, museums & churches… all leading up to singing on the Carnegie Hall stage with 10 other church choirs and full orchestra! We sang the cantata, “Our Father,” on Father’s Day! It was a cantata about all the different components of the Lord’s Prayer.
What a moving experience… to be humbled by
such a renown, historical, beautiful building through the power of music and scripture among other Christians… there were a lot of tears through the performance. We definitely performed with our church family right there with us in spirit! Maybe another trip in our future?
Music Ministry Choir Retreats
10:45 Voices of Hope choir & Yuletide Christmas Choir
The music ministry invites you to come to our Choir Retreats on Saturday, Aug. 25, starting at 8:30am. We have breakfast together where you can ask questions and meet some choir members.
We sing through some of the anthems (songs) that we will be doing in church at the 10:45 service for the fall, then we take a little break so you can visit or get more info if needed. At 10:30 we sing through our Christmas music for our Yuletide program, and you can get home before lunchtime!
We hope you can come and spend a musical
morning with us! Contact Wendy Kallen, our
music director, at 858.722.8572 or Ginny Lorenz,
our choir manager, at 858.354.3939 for more
info.

Kid’s Stuff
KIDS OF HOPE HAVE BEEN RESCUED BY JESUS!
June 25-29 was our annual Vacation Bible School and we had a great time! This year our theme was Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus! Through crafts, games, music, snacks, Bible stories, and wild antics in our opening and closing sessions, 125 children learned that when we’re lonely, when we struggle, when we’re worried, when we do wrong, and when we feel powerless . . . Jesus rescues us!
It was a fantastic week, thanks in large part to our wonderful team of 45 youth and 10 adult volunteers. For our service project, we collected 76 jars of pasta sauce (10 of them were the jumbo Costco size) and 60 jars of Peanut Butter (12 were the jumbo 48 oz. size) for the Friends & Family Community Connection which distributes food to hungry families in North County. We also collected 153 pairs (39 packages) of new children’s underwear for the children, many of whom are homeless, who attend the Perkins School in Barrio Logan. Thank you for supporting VBS through your prayers, service, donations, and offerings!

BLUEGRASS & BBQ
Saturday, Aug. 18 • 6pm
Back by popular demand, the Drought Tolerant
Bluegrass Band is coming to Hope UMC once again on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 6:00pm. It's made up of 4 professional bluegrass players, who have been playing for up to 40 years! All of them play in multiple bluegrass bands, and have played all over Southern California. We are very excited to have them back! There’s all the brisket, barbecue, & beans you can imagine, a potluck extravaganza, desserts, and amazing pies to raffle off throughout the evening.
A free-will offering is highly encouraged so that we can continue this annual church-wide event. Bring your family, friends, loved ones, and appetite. We will be toe-tapping together with style! Bring a covered dish to share. Looking forward to a great evening!
