Pastor Cara Shonomon's Weekly Email for Friday, 20 July 2018 from Shawnee Church of the Nazarene in Shawnee, Kansas, United States
Greetings Shawnee Family!
This past week Justin, Kenzie, Alice, and I went to Michigan to be with Justin’s relatives. It was great to be with all of them. One of the moments I will forever remember is sitting with Justin’s Grandpa Mark. He was pretty rough around the edges when he was young. Justin tells me stories of how he was raised by an uncle. They lived in a shack in the woods, no running water, and no electricity. When he was two or three he was playing rough with a dog and the dog bit off the tip of his finger. He would tell you that he deserved it. He went into the army when he was a teen and traveled the world.
Later in life he married and had four kids. He and his wife divorced when Justin was a young boy. Grandpa Mark moved into a trailer and works at an antique store. Many would say that he has had it rough and has every right to be an old, upset, and bitter man.
A few nights ago I sat with Grandpa Mark and he told me how thankful he is for God in his life and how he praises God daily. He had tears running down his face. He said he doesn’t always get it right. He says that sometimes he gets frustrated with his neighbor for not taking care of the yard, but then he told me, “God loves my neighbor too and so I need to love my neighbor!”
He continued to tell me about how much he loves God and thanks God every day for life and all that he has. I know I am the pastor, but Grandpa Mark ministered to me this week. His tender heart after a rough life is evidence of the work of the Spirit in him.
I got to show him the video of Justin being baptized on Easter and he sat and cried. As soon as it was over he walked over to Justin without saying a thing and gave him a huge hug. It was a precious moment I will never forget.
I’m thankful for the work of the Spirit in the lives of people.
I’m thankful for Grandpa Mark and his faithfulness.
I’m thankful for the reminder from Grandpa Mark that God loves everyone and we must do the same.
May we be people filled with the Spirit and shaped by the love of God.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Cara
