Moscow, Russia
Until only a couple of years ago, there were no Wesleyan academic commentaries available in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a confederation of nine Eurasian countries also known as the Russian Commonwealth.
Global Missions Director Verne Ward presents
General Superintendent (and former pioneer
missionary to the CIS Field) Carla Sunberg
with a set of commentaries in Russian.
Nazarene generosity leads to key resources in RussianNow, thanks to the generosity of retired school teacher Chloe Schweitzer and the multitudes of people who donate to the Church of the Nazarene's World Evangelism Fund (WEF), there are nearly 15 of the New Beacon Bible Commentaries translated into Russian — the most common language in the CIS.
In 2006, Schweitzer was a volunteer teaching English in Moscow, Russia. Schweitzer and her siblings decided they wanted to sponsor the translation of a book into Russian in memory of her parents, who were retired Nazarene ministers. The book they sponsored was The Story of God by Michael Lodahl and was published in Russian that year.
Shortly after this, Schweitzer returned home to the U.S. due to health issues, eventually passing away the following year. Before her passing, she donated a portion of her estate to the development of a much larger translation project than the previous one.
It wasn’t hard to see that the Russian-speaking world of the former Soviet Union, known as the CIS Field, needed Wesleyan commentaries, particularly for the Old Testament. To fill that gap, Schweitzer and the Church of the Nazarene's CIS Literature Committee decided to use her donation to translate the New Beacon Bible Commentaries.
The Schweitzer family needed to sell her home to receive the money to donate to the project, but due to the U.S. recession during that time, it took nearly 10 years after she passed to do so. In the meantime, the church partnered with local Christan publisher Bible for Everyone and translation moved forward in 2010 with WEF funding the project.
In 2016, the Schweitzer home was sold, and by this time there were already 11 commentaries translated. Since then, her donation has been used to sponsor the translation of three more commentaries with up to four more planned if all goes well.
Church of the Nazarene Global Missions Director Verne Ward recently presented the commentaries to General Superintendent Carla Sunberg, who served as a pioneer missionary in the CIS Field for many years.
"Chloe Schweitzer loved the church in the former Soviet Union and gave generously of herself as a volunteer," Sunberg said. "Now, her legacy will live on in the lives of our pastors and leaders across the CIS Field. My life is richer because I have known her, and this investment in such an outstanding commentary series will make a difference for years to come."
The resources are expected to benefit hundreds of ministers, students, and laity across the field.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Schweitzer family, Nazarenes around the world, and the excellent work of our literature team," Ward said, "these commentaries will have an incredible impact as we continue to develop leaders in our churches across the CIS Field to better equip them for ministry and going where the church is not yet.”

Hundreds of quizzers gather for Q2018Nearly 400 quizzers from the Church of the Nazarene's USA/Canada Region gathered 25-30 June at MidAmerica Nazarene University for the bi-annual youth quizzing event, Q2018.Produced by Nazarene Youth International USA/Canada, the event featured a tournament-style competition, plenary worship sessions throughout the week, and a block party that included lawn games and opportunities for the youth to speak to MNU admissions counselors.
Participants competed in teams of five against other teams from across the region. Matches were live streamed on the regional quizzing website for family, friends, and quizzers who couldn't attend the trip.
Each "Q" event focuses on a specific part of the Bible that the youth are expected to study. This year all questions were pulled from 1 and 2 Corinthians, and the teams prepared up to a year in advance, studying Scripture and committing the books to memory.
Throughout the week, several awards were handed out to competition finalists, essayists, and those who exhibited exemplary knowledge in their district. This year, the Eastern Field (Eastern Nazarene College) won the field division.
“Q2018 rounded up a years’ worth of efforts put into studying Scripture," said Allison Campbell, NYI Quizzing liaison for the region. "This dedication and discipline were evident during the 1,300 rounds of quizzing that took place at 'Q.' What is even more impressive is the encouragement they gave each other during and after rounds. It was evident that the mission of Youth Quizzing was landing well with students."
The Bible quizzing program launched as a ministry of the Church of the Nazarene in 1964, and it has been an integral part of Nazarene youth ministries ever since.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Henry W. Spaulding II has announced the appointment of Tracy Waal to the position of vice president for Student Life as of 1 August.
“Tracy Waal has worked with youth and emerging adults for most of his professional ministry," Spaulding said. "He cares about our students and he loves MVNU. He will bring insightful leadership to the Student Life office. His demonstrated work ethic positions him to hit the ground running on 1 August.”
Waal, originally from Okaloosa, Iowa, attended and volunteered with the youth group at his home church, Gateway Church of the Nazarene.
"After graduating from college, I returned home to Gateway Church of the Nazarene to begin my ministry," Waal said. "Many great people mentored and stretched me and planted seeds that helped me grow to where I am today."
Waal joined MVNU in 2009 as the assistant director of recruitment until 2013. After that, he served as director of Admissions from 2013 to 2018 and has served as an adjunct faculty member for public relations.
“For nine years I’ve been privileged to work with some of the most passionate people in the world to recruit prospective students to join an amazing community," Waal said. "Now I’m excited to continue the rich MVNU tradition of stretching students to reach their God-given potential in every area of their lives.”
Outside of MVNU, Waal has more than 25 years of experience working directly with high school and college students. He served as a youth pastor at Hope Community Nazarene in Oregon, Ohio, from 1999 to 2007 and was the co-founder of Neighbors of Hope, a nonprofit ministry to widows of East Toledo, Ohio, from 2007 to 2009.
“We truly have something unique [at MVNU]," Waal said. "This campus is filled with faculty and staff that invest deeply in the lives of our students. They’re challenged and stretched, often beyond what is comfortable, and experience growth in ways they couldn’t even imagine. I’ve seen this happen with hundreds of MVNU students, including my two oldest daughters, and I recognize more than ever that this is our calling and purpose. Efforts to develop every student’s body, soul, mind, and spirit will continue to be our top priority.”
Waal graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and received an MBA from MVNU in 2014. Waal was ordained as a deacon of the Church of the Nazarene in 2005. Tracy and his wife, Rhonda, have four children: Bethany (’17), Kailey (’18), Neti, and Meke.

Trevecca names Jessica Dykes as associate vice president, dean of Student DevelopmentJessica Dykes, who holds two Trevecca degrees, has been named the new associate vice president and dean of Student Development. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Trevecca in 2007, Dykes completed a Master’s in Organizational Leadership in 2013. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama.
“I am so excited to return to the Hill as the new associate vice president and dean of Student Development,” Dykes said. “Trevecca is a special place, and I am inspired by the work God is doing on campus. I look forward to developing and supporting students as they persist to graduation, serving alongside talented professionals, and working in the Trevecca community again.”
Dykes’ responsibilities will include oversight for resident life, community life, student academic success, counseling services, career development, commuter students, disability services, internships, the student work program, spiritual life, and student activities. Her tenure will begin on 1 August.
Administration officials are excited to welcome Dykes back to the university.
“Replacing a 40-year veteran like Dr. Steve Harris is a huge task,” said Dan Boone, Trevecca’s president. “I am pleased to welcome home one of our own leaders whose work experience over the past 11 years has prepared her for the work ahead. Jessica Dykes loves Trevecca and has taken every opportunity to sharpen her skills for a life of service to our students.”
Tom Middendorf, associate provost and dean of Academic Affairs, agreed.
“It’s always a good day when we get to welcome an alumnus back home to the Hill,” Middendorf said. “Jessica’s life was impacted and forever changed by the mission of our university. It was here that she developed a sense of calling to the field of student development and felt God’s prompting to invest in young people. This is not a job, but a ministry.”
Dykes comes to the university from Belmont University, where she has most recently served as the director of Student Organizations and Activities. She previously served as the assistant director of Student Engagement and Leadership Development at Belmont as well as the assistant director of Student Life and Leadership at the University of Texas at Tyler.
In addition, Dykes served as the residence hall director of Trevecca’s Johnson Hall from 2009 to 2014. She fills the vacancy left by Steve Harris, who retired as dean of students on 30 June.
In the newly created role, Dykes will lead a team that consolidates all of the university’s academic and student services into one campus unit. The realignment will bring together the Office of Student Development, the Center for Leadership, Calling and Service, and the Office of the Chaplain. It’s a move Steve Pusey, university provost, says will streamline the work of these departments.
“Our goal has been to develop a collaborative organizational structure and services that focus on the holistic development of our students — one which would consolidate all of our academic and student services, those in and outside the classroom, to meet the varying needs of a wide range of students,” Pusey said. “Through such a structure, we envision a new area of student development that provides more effective services and increased opportunities for student success.”
Middendorf will also take on an expanded role in the restructure. Since returning to his alma mater in 2008, Middendorf has been instrumental in overseeing the work of the Center for Calling, Leadership, and Service, including launching Trevecca’s program for first-year students, now known as LINK.
He will continue to provide oversight and direction to Dykes and her team, while also maintaining his duties as the university’s chief academic officer with the revised title of associate provost and dean of Academic and Student Affairs.
These changes will be implemented immediately in preparation for the Fall 2018 semester, which begins on 28 August. (Trevecca Nazarene University)
