"Two ways to join the movement" for Thursday, 19 July 2018 from The Global Immersion Project in San Diego, California, United States
Last month when the attention of the world was on the US's southern border, a pastor friend from Denver reached out. Like so many people, he desperately wanted to go to Tijuana and be with those in pain. We talked through responsible and respectful ways to engage and mutually came to the conclusion that the best gift that he and his church could offer those at the border was not flying to meet them, but giving to those who are already at the border, in relationship, and doing the work.
The next Sunday (the last Sunday of their fiscal year) instead of encouraging the congregation to fund their churches “stretch budget,” he challenged them to give to the situation at the border. At the end of the day $25,000 was collected that will be distributed among a few high-impact organizations working on both sides of the US/Mexico border.
This is just another example of the costly, creative love that Jesus modeled for us. It’s the type of contending in emergency situations that ushers in the possibility of restoration to those being crushed by broken systems. The great surprise is that in the giving, our friend and his church experienced restoration. In the wake of this most recent crisis at the border we ask you the question we’re asking ourselves:
“What is the creative, costly love that the Spirit is compelling us to offer?”
To help you answer the question, we have an opportunity for you to GO and an opportunity to GIVE.
