Global Church of the Nazarene DAY 34 OF 40 - Better Together Through Prayer And The Word
Nehemiah 9:9-15
9 "And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea, 10 and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. 11 And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into mighty waters. 12 By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant. 15 You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.
Nehemiah 9:26-27
26 "Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies. 27 Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer. And in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies.
DAY 34 – A HISTORY LESSON – GOD IS EVER FAITHFUL
In the scripture for today, we see God’s faithfulness but we see the unfaithfulness of the Israelites… We are looking at a group of people…God’s chosen people…the Israelites… Worship continues…
SCRIPTURE: Nehemiah 9:9 “You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea, 10 and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is today. 11 You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the middle of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12 Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.
13 “You came down also on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant, 15 and gave them bread from the sky for their hunger, and brought water out of the rock for them for their thirst, and commanded them that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.
26 “Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their back, and killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies. 27 Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. In the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries.
The Israelites begin praising God for His faithfulness to their forefathers…
1) God saw their suffering in Egypt. 2) God heard their cry at the Red Sea. 3) When they were hungry, God gave them bread from heaven. 4) When they were thirsty, God gave them clean, pure water from a rock.
In verse 26, we read of their responses to God’s faithfulness to them… 1) They were disobedient and rebelled against God. 2) Killed God’s prophets who tried to lead them back to God. 3) They committed awful blasphemies…the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God. In verse 27, they began praising God for his response to their
Unfaithfulness. First, God allowed them to go through oppression from their enemies. BUT…when they cried out to God… 1) From heaven God heard their cries. 2) God gave them deliverers to rescue them because of God’s great compassion. 3) God was FAITHFUL and RESCUED them!
LIFE APPLICATION: In what ways have I been a part of a group that has been unfaithful to God…. We have been unfaithful to your Word and your Way by ________________.
