Leawood, Kansas, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Men's Ministry for April 2014

Leawood, Kansas, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Men's Ministry for April 2014
Greetings Men of the Church of the Resurrection,
The approaching month of April will this year contain the celebration of all celebrations. This is the annual reminder that the dreadful powers of disease, selfishness, sin and death have been defeated by the once-and-for-all-time triumph of Jesus Christ at Easter. Halleluiah, what a Savior!
Most of you know that every year we host a Men’s Spiritual Retreat and have done so for several years.  Our retreat this year blew away all my expectations and hopes.  Great meals, inspiring worship and wonderful friendship time were all fantastic.  But the 325 plus guys who attended cannot stop talking about the impact of three messages given by Dr. James Bryan Smith.  There was something about the clarity, simplicity and profundity of his messages that rocked our world.  Most talks we hear inform our minds and encourage our hearts.  Jim’s talks are changing us.
I am so thankful for all the team members who helped organize, invite and joined forces to create a retreat we will all remember.  I am especially grateful to God who, by His Holy Spirit, showed up in such powerful and personal ways.  I am so thankful.
In Christ,
Jeff
Interview with Kim Rowlen
Kim, tell us about yourself.  Did you grow up here? What kind of work do you do?
I grew up in Belleville, a small farming community in north central Kansas, and graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in Computer Science. With the exception of 3 ½ years of living in Oklahoma, I’ve lived in Kansas my whole life. The last 25 years I have lived here in Johnson County and worked for the same company—Sprint, Embarq, now CenturyLink— where my current title is Information Security Auditor.
What is your background concerning the Christian faith?  Did you grow up in the faith or is this something more recent for you?
My Dad was a Lay Reader in a very small Episcopal church, so I spent my early years going to church, and was blessed to see him deliver the sermon several times. He passed away when I was 13 and attending church after that became sporadic, usually with friends at their churches. I renewed my faith at the age of 19 and asked Christ to come into my life. But I wasn’t active in a church on a regular basis. Although I was always a believer, I just wasn’t practicing what I knew I should.  Eventually, I knew something was missing in my life and I started looking for a church home. Having attended COR a few times when it was in the original Wesley Chapel, I tried it again when the Sanctuary was in the current Student Center, but I just wasn’t connecting. I had a friend who told me about the contemporary services being held at the Ritz Charles and that was all I needed—I was hooked. God has a way of putting people in your path to nudge in you the right direction.
How would you describe how God is at work in your life at this time?
I met my wife, Caron, the summer of 2004, and was very blessed that she was already a member of COR (between the two of us we have four daughters ranging in age from 18 to 25). We have attended COR on a regular basis since we met, which was very important to both of us, but being recent ‘empty nesters’ has opened some doors in our faith journey that we are very excited about.  Last fall, after a ‘nudge’ from Pastor Jeff, I began attending the Men’s Fellowship on Tuesday mornings, and Caron and I were able to take the Alpha class this past winter session; both have been rewarding, fulfilling and blessings more than we had anticipated.  We’re excited about becoming more involved in the many opportunities that COR has to offer and look forward to exploring ways we can contribute. It’s true what Pastor Adam says: you may start off thinking you’re helping someone else, but in the end, you’re the one who’s ultimately blessed.
