Leawood, Kansas, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection eNote with Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 22 August 2014
Dear Resurrection Family,
Last weekend in worship we handed out small cards with two scripture memory verses on them as I invited you to say and pray two scriptures each day this week: "Let no evil talk come out of your mouth, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, that your words may give grace to those who hear." (Ephesians 4:29) The prayer was from Psalm 19:14, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer."
We had a total of 12,400 people in worship – imagine the impact of over 12,400 of us trying to live these words each day. One middle schooler took her memory card and taped it to her locker at school. A number of you told me you taped them to your computer at work. One of you wrote that you felt "lighter" each day this week as you daily read and tried to practice these scriptures. I felt the same way. Focusing on these scriptures changed my words and thoughts this week.
If you missed the cards this last weekend, or if you misplaced your card or your dog ate it, we'll have them in the bulletin again this weekend. You can click here and here for images with the verses that you could use as a screen saver on your computer. My sermon will focus on healthy marriages, families and relationships and what words to avoid, and a handful of words we must regularly say if we're to have happy and loving relationships. It's going to be a great weekend in worship!
You've been hearing about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Several of you challenged me in the last week. I accepted the challenge and I'd like you to see the video we put together in which I'll introduce you to Resurrection members Scott Cart and his family. Scott was diagnosed with ALS nine years ago. You'll be inspired by the Cart family as you watch the video. It ends with Scott's girls dousing me with ice water (they seemed to take great pleasure in this!). The video is four minutes long and you can watch it by clicking here. In it I challenge Resurrection campus pastors Jason Gant, Scott Chrostek and Penny Ellwood to take the plunge.
Are you interested in joining Church of the Resurrection? Or just knowing more about the church? Join me at the Leawood Campus this Sunday afternoon for Coffee with the Pastors in the Student Center from 2 to 3:45 pm. Coffee starts promptly at 2:00 pm and we'll share with you the church's story, what it means to be a Christian, who we are as United Methodists, and the expectations for members. At the end, we have a brief but moving joining ceremony for those ready to become members of the church. We have 125 people registered. You can register here or you can just show up. Resurrection Blue Springs and West will also have Coffee with the Pastors this SundayBlue Springs is at noon, and West is at 2:30 pm. The next Coffee at Resurrection Downtown will be Sept. 7.
While you are reading this note I'm in a meeting with the Art Subcommittee of the Resurrection Leawood Building Committee. We're meeting with Tim Carey and David Judson of Judson Studios to review their progress on the conceptual drawings for the stained glass window for our permanent sanctuary. If you'd like to know more about Judson Studios and to see examples of their work, click here. We'll share more about the design in the next few months.
Don't forget, our next blood drive at Leawood Campus is this coming Monday and Tuesday, August 25/26 from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm in the Narthex of Building B. A single pint of blood can save at least two lives. Anyone 16 and over weighing at least 115 lbs. is eligible (16-year-olds must have parental consent). Walk-ins are welcome, but save time by making an appointment online.
I'm really excited about this weekend's Missions Fair taking place during worship. You'll have a chance to find out about a host of our missions ministries as you stop by the tables. A drawing will be held giving away some great prizes including a scholarship for one of our international mission trips to Honduras. This is an awesome opportunity to learn more about the ways that you can serve in Kansas City and beyond.
I wanted to end by mentioning my excitement about Saint Paul School of Theology. Last year you welcomed the seminary to our Leawood Campus. The students start fall classes next week. Enrollment and giving to the seminary are both up for the fall! There is a spirit of excitement as a new school year begins. If you are interested in taking graduate courses in theology, Bible, church history, or a host of other areas of study, it's not too late to sign up for this fall semester. Click here to find out more about Saint Paul School of Theology.
See you in worship!
Adam
