  Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 10:40-42
Matthew 10:40-42 “We are intimately linked in this harvest work. Anyone who accepts what you do, accepts me, the One who sent you. Anyone who accepts what I do accepts my Father, who sent me. Accepting a messenger of God is as good as being God’s messenger. Accepting someone’s help is as good as giving someone help. This is a large work I’ve called you into, but don’t be overwhelmed by it. It’s best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won’t lose out on a thing.”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Matthew 10:40-42
Verse 40
[40] He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
Matthew 18:5; Luke 10:16; John 13:20.
Verse 41
[41] He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
He that entertaineth a prophet — That is, a preacher of the Gospel: In the name of a prophet - That is, because he is such, shall share in his reward.
Verse 42
[42] And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
One of these little ones — The very least Christian. Mark 9:41.

By the Water
I invite you to think about favorite memories you have, from time spent at rivers, or lakes, or at the ocean's shore. I treasure sunsets over Nebraska's Platte River, and the clarity of high mountain lakes. Water has a power over me--it seems to amplify the beautify around, to intensify a sense of calm, or to ground me with a sense of something bigger than my understanding.
This Sunday, we'll be thinking about water, as a basic human need. As our state continues in a state of drought emergency, vivid pictures of empty lakes and dry farmland reveal our dependence on water. As we pray for rain, we are also invited to think about water--how it is allocated or distributed, how we conserve it as a resource on which we all depend, how we can be a part of making sure water is available to meet our most basic human needs.
We also share in the sacrament of baptism--in which water and the Spirit come together to mark an entry into the community of the church. An outward, visible sign of something much more powerful than we can see, the water marks a new beginning. I hope you'll join us as we share in baptism--baptizing Emily Casey Ledbetter in our 10:30 worship service, and renewing our baptismal vows and remember our baptisms at both services. We will not share Holy Communion this week, but will share in a special baptism remembrance, in which everyone will be invited to be marked by the water.

Welcome to New Staff Member:
Organist Carolyn Tyler
We are very pleased to announce that we have hired a new Organist/Pianist, Carolyn Tyler. Carolyn has already begun playing piano for our Wednesday choir rehearsals, and will be with us in 10:30 worship starting September 21. Carolyn brings over 30 years of church music experience, as an organist and pianist. Though her career has taken her to Iowa and northern California, she is a South Bay native; her first big performance was with the Beach Cities Symphony when, at age 11, she played a piano solo (Debussy's "Second Arabesque"). She studied at El Camino College and USC's School of Music, and later pursued work in composing and arranging at Dick Grove School of Music in LA, and in UCLA's Film Scoring Program. Carolyn recently moved back to the area, along with her husband, Steve, who is a jazz trombone player, and her young adult son. She is especially pleased to join our new Music Director, Jim Raycroft, in leadership here-they also worked together in the 1990's at the United Methodist Church in Pacific Palisades.
Our deep gratitude to Manney Arellano, who has served us beautifully as interim pianist in worship. Please join us in giving him our thanks this Sunday, the 14th, which will be the final week of this interim work.

Special Presentation:
Corazón - Building Community Across Borders
FUMCRB and Friends, Mexico
October 2006
On Sunday, September 21, from 9:30-10:15 in Epworth Lounge, George & Peggy Mercer of our congregation will speak about Corazón. Corazón is about people providing shelter;  protection from the elements, security for ones family and for their possessions, a place to find oneself, a place to share your meals, a place for where your heart lies.  Come find out more about this 35 year organization that one high school student after their third trip wrote these words, "My life is about convenience . . .I cross the border and human nature is the same; it is the struggle for survival that is so dramatically different."  FUMCRB has helped build 12 homes in Mexico.  Become a part of this tradition by learning first hand how you can help to provide shelter in one day.

UMKIC is collecting School Supplies for Haiti
UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief)  has asked us to help them in their effort to provide much needed kits for the children of Haiti. We will be collecting every Sunday from now until September 21st.
At the 9:30am hour (on September 21st) we will host a special missions sewing workshop for parents and children, preparing the tote bags for our kits.
On September 28th (during the 9:30am hour) there will be a presentation about UMCOR, and its work in providing disaster relief around the world; following the presentation, people of all ages will help assemble the School Kits to sent to UMCOR to aid its work.
In addition to the School supplies (see above) we need:
- $$ to help cover shipping costs.
Thank you for supporting our Children (UMKIC) in their mission work.

From the Lay Leader, Johnna Kosnoff
bi-weekly thoughts and reflections from our church Lay Leader
"Did you know that both Moses and Jesus had something to say about water?  If you didn't, you need to come on Sunday and hear what Pastor Molly will share.  She will be preaching about water as one of our basic needs.  A representative from the West Basin Water District will also be at church to discuss California's Drought Emergency and why it matters to us in the South Bay.  He will suggest ways we can address some of the challenges we face. I have been thinking a lot lately about the drought and my responsibility regarding water and we've been making a few adjustments in our home life to conserve more water than we have in the past.  I am encouraged because many of you have been doing the same thing.
I am pleased that our Global UMC cares enough to create a Social Principle* to encourage us to care for our "Natural World."  I don't have room to reprint the entire Social Principle in our bulletin so I'll give you the parts that specifically mention water. Social Principle ¶160 states: All creation is the Lord's and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it.  Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources..."
"Water: A Basic Need" by Johnna Kosnoff
Did you know that both Moses and Jesus had something to say about water?  If you didn’t, you need to come on Sunday and hear what Pastor Molly will share.  She will be preaching about water as one of our basic needs.  A representative from the West Basin Water District will also be at church to discuss California’s Drought Emergency and why it matters to us in the South Bay.  He will suggest ways we can address some of the challenges we face. I have been thinking a lot lately about the drought and my responsibility regarding water and we’ve been making a few adjustments in our home life to conserve more water than we have in the past.  I am encouraged because many of you have been doing the same thing.
I am pleased that our Global UMC cares enough to create a Social Principle* to encourage us to care for our “Natural World.”  I don’t have room to reprint the entire Social Principle in our bulletin so I’ll give you the parts that specifically mention water. Social Principle ¶160 states: All creation is the Lord’s and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God’s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings. God has granted us stewardship of creation.  We should meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect….
¶160A focuses on water and important things that affect our water, like air, soil, minerals and plants.  Here is the part about water: We urge development of international agreements concerning equitable utilization of the world’s resources for human benefit so long as the integrity of the earth is maintained. We are deeply concerned about the privatization of water resources, the bottling of water to be sold as a commodity for profit, and the resources that go into packaging bottled water.  We urge all municipalities and other governmental organizational to develop processes for determining sustainability of water resources and to determine the environmental, economic, and social consequences of privatization of water resources prior to the licensing and approval thereof.
I hope you will join me on Sunday for Molly’s sermon and at 9:45 (in Epworth) to hear how we can better care for God’s creation.  I am trying to be more consistent in my prayer for God to send us water.  I hope you’ll join me in that too.
Blessings
*If you would like to see the entire Social Principle, let me know and I’d be happy to get you a copy.  You may also go to the Cokesbury website and get a free online copy of the Book of Discipline, which contains the Social Principles of the UMC.
