Should Adams Elementary start a Spanish Immersion Program?
Dear Families and Friends of Normal Heights and surrounding communities,
Adams Elementary is willing to have a Two-Way Bilingual Spanish Immersion Program for their 2015-16 Kindergarten class! What this means is they need to get interest and approval from the community and anyone interested and then enroll 48 kindergarteners for this coming school year. Yes, you can enroll your child for the upcoming year, and yes, if you live within the San Diego Unified District boundaries, anyone can enroll. This program benefits both English only speakers as well as English Language Learners.
1. Please take this survey; it will take no more than a minute (really, it's 3 questions). They need them ASAP: via their website or via Facebook.
**One of the questions discusses the 90/10 model or 50/50 model. There is an explanation of that in this attachment or you can find more information with Kathryn Lindholm-Leary, Ph.D. (http://www.cal.org/twi) (ELL=English Language Learners)
2. SPREAD THE WORD!! Whether you have a child or neighbors with children, plans or not next year, whether your baby is in utero and it's impossible to think about kindergarten, whether you want your child speaking Spanish or not, you know someone who is interested. Please help us spread the word! Share with local playgroups, put it on your Facebook page, let your friends and neighbors know. E-mail nancy@NHUnited.org for a printable flier to pass out to people as you walk around or go to the park.
3. Mark your calendars for April 30th at 6:00 at Adams Elementary for a parent discussion and more information on this program.

Two-Way Bilingual Immersion
Two-Way Bilingual Immersion blends two language education models: An immersion program for English only speakers and a bilingual maintenance model for English Learners. Students from two language groups attend classes together, learning from one another and supporting each other’s second language acquisition. Both groups of students develop linguistic and academic competence in two languages; their native language and one more. For more information on how San Diego Unified School District uses this program at more than 7 schools, go to http://www.sandi.net.
Benefits for students:
Students that learn a second language benefit in the following ways:
Improves academic achievement
Enhances communication skills
Expands students’ multicultural views
Provides future career options
Learning a second language during childhood is the best time to develop fluency, pronunciation, and a natural ease of expression.Comparing the achievement of students in 90/10 and 50/50 models, Kathryn Lindholm-Leary, Ph.D. found that by Grades 6, English language learners and native-English-speaking students scored similarly to their peers of the same language and economic backgrounds on achievement tests in English. When achievement was measured in Spanish, students in 90/10 programs scored higher than students in 50/50 programs. Thus, more instructional time spent in Spanish positively affected achievement in Spanish and had no negative effect on achievement measured in English. -Center for Applied Linguistics
