REV. SOKURT SUOS
CAMBODIANS MINISTRIES FACILITATOR
REFLECTIONIn April 1975, the war ended in the country of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Millions of lives were lost, and many more were displaced around the world. About 1.5 million people from these three countries settled in the United States as refugees. In the early 1980s, Southeast Asian churches started. There were no prior connection between the Church of the Nazarene and the Southeast Asian population, but doors were opened for this new work across the U.S. Missions came home to America, and Nazarenes responded with favor to this new challenge. There were no materials to train leaders in their native language, but still people responded to the call.
I was one of the millions who was displaced in a foreign country. However, some loving Christians took an interest in me during those early days and nurtured my call into ministry. Thirty-three years later, I am still in pastoral ministry. As you can see a little bit of investment in the lives of people will go a long way. As we look into the future of Southeast Asian ministries I encourage you get to know this particular group of people. They have a rich history. They are loving, hardworking, and friendly. And a lot of times they need encouragement especially when it comes to the Christian faith. Just as someone invested in me I pray that you will take an interest in their life. Disciple them, mentor them, and help them in their walk with Jesus. We need leaders within the Southeast Asian community. Your encouragement might just be the thing that will help someone open their hearts to Jesus and to ministry. Let us work together to reach out to these communities and watch the amazing things that God will do.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR - DR. ROBERTO HODGSONIn the last e-news I shared the vision of the Ethnic Leadership Development Initiative (ELDI) to internationally cultivate a group of ethnic young leaders. I’m glad that we are moving ahead with this initiative and the Ethnic Facilitators are assisting in the selection process of this new generation of leaders. I provided the following guidelines for this process:
The candidate must:
Be active in ministry and serving in a local church;
Have ministerial education background;
Be a potential candidate for membership on the SRT committee;
Be willing to be cultivated by a coaching system for two years;
Have a mentor during the two-year program;
Be under 40 years of age and preferably 1.5 or second generation.
I also asked the facilitators to serve as mentors to the person(s) they are recommending to be a part of ELDI.
Dear SRT members, would you please pray for this initiative as we are investing in cultivating the future ethnic leaders as Paul did with Timothy: “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
Dr. Roberto Hodgson, Multicultural Ministries Director USA/Canada
Multicultural Ministries vision is to encourage the development of strategy and initiative to reach the USA/Canada mission field through the visionary leadership of the ethnic facilitators, and their strategy committees.
