The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection of Leawood, Kansas, United States Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 24 April 2015
Dear Resurrection Family,
I hope you are doing well on this rainy spring morning! I’m spending several hours today filming a set of video discussions with Theology Professor Roger Olson, who teaches at Baylor’s Truett Theological Seminary. Dr. Olson was one of my professors when I was an undergraduate. He’s written an excellent new book coming out later this year called Counterfeit Christianity. We’ll spend time together discussing his ideas from the perspective of a scholar and a local church pastor. I’ve not seen him in person for 30 years - looking forward to our conversations today!
I’m also looking forward to this weekend in worship. My sermon is entitled, “God’s Will for YOUR Life” and will focus on what we mean when we say that “God has a plan for your life” and how we discern that plan. This is a big question. Does God have a predetermined plan for your life - so that everything that happens in your life is according to God’s plan? How detailed is that plan? Is there one right person for you to marry? One right career? Can you miss God’s plan? What happens then? Scripture calls us to discern God’s will. Sometimes God’s will seems elusive. How can we know the will of God? These are all questions we’ll consider together as we continue our study of Why?.
Please join me in praying for Resurrection West today, right now. Our West campus is in the midst of their capital campaign which will make possible a critically important expansion; making room for children, youth and providing room for expansion of the sanctuary. This weekend Pastor Jason is preaching at West on how we are defined by our sacrifices. A great sermon and inspiring as the folks at West prepare to make their commitments in the capital campaign, just as those at Leawood did last year. Please pray for the people of West as they prepare for this very important weekend.
Did you know thousands of Resurrection members sponsor thousands of children through a variety of organizations around the world? The organization we work most closely with is Compassion International. LaVon and I have been sponsoring children through this organization for 32 years. I believe Resurrection members sponsor over 2,000 children through Compassion including 200 children at the Compassion International Center in Haiti. You’ll see a brief video about this important ministry this weekend in worship. To learn more about how you can help a child in need, visit the Compassion table in the Narthex after worship. If you already sponsor a Compassion child, we’d love to hear how child sponsorship has impacted your life. Please take a moment and share your story with us at this link.
Are you a visitor to Resurrection thinking about joining and making this your church family? I’d like to invite you to join me at the Leawood campus this Sunday afternoon, April 26, from 2 to 4 in the Student Center, for Coffee with the Pastors. This is the official process for joining and you’ll be with 100 other visitors and our pastors learning more about the church, the Christian faith and what is expected of our members. I think you’ll find it inspiring, meaningful and a blessing! The last 15 minutes is the joining ceremony for those who are ready to make this church their church family. Click here if you need childcare,www.cor.org/coffee. Each of our campuses will be hosting Coffee with the Pastors. This weekend Resurrection Downtown is at 1:30 pm at 1522 McGee (click here) and Resurrection Blue Springs is after their 10:45 worship service (click here). Resurrection West will have Coffee with the Pastors at 2:30 pm on Sunday, May 2(click here).
If you’ve yet to sign up for the 20th Anniversary Resurrection Golf Classic, you can do so here. There is also a silent auction - you can bid online for Royals tickets, cleaning services, sports memorabilia and a beautiful painting by Jeff Hanson. We have room for golfers as well as volunteers. Proceeds will benefit the Joyce Eacock Memorial Scholarship Fund for seminary students. Come enjoy food, fun, fellowship and in the process, help prepare future pastors who will make disciples, renew churches and inspire and equip their congregations to change the world.
The Internet and Sexuality - Why It’s a Problem and How to be a Part of the Solution. This is the name of a seminar we’re putting on tomorrow morning at Resurrection Downtown (1522 McGee) from 9 to 11 am. Resurrection’s Sherry Danner will teach - she’s a certified sexual addiction therapist. This event is for those 18 and over only - with a specific part focused on information for parents. This is an important seminar that I’d like to encourage you to attend as porn addiction is an epidemic today, one that can have serious and damaging consequences. For questions contact Pastor Anne Williams here, anne.williams@cor.org.
I want to thank all who sent information and suggestions for resources as we look to put together an event related to ISIS. We’ll look over these e-mails in the next week - we received dozens of responses last week - and my plan is to organize an event with key experts.
Next February I’ll lead a Lenten journey through the Holy Land for Resurrection members. We’ll retrace Jesus’ life from Bethlehem where he was born, the Jordan where he was baptized, the Galilee where he grew up and ministered, and then Jerusalem where he spent the last days of his life, was crucified and resurrected. If you think you might be interested in joining me for this trip, click here and let us know,sue.thompson@cor.org. We’re trying to get an idea of how many people would like to participate for planning purposes. Next month we’ll have more information and the official sign up. Sending us your interest in this trip does not guarantee a spot on the trip, this journey will likely sell out. The details and official sign up will be next month.
I’m heading into several hours of conversation with my old college professor! Hoping you have a great day today, and that I’ll see you this weekend as we worship and consider God’s will for your life and how you discern his will.
Blessings!
Adam Hamilton
